Wait? when did this happen?

Also i don't think they are overpaid. You have to be a really good youtuber to make ridiculous money. Some of them just get use it as a second income or barely survive off of it. I feel the quality of some channels will drop now if they don't get paid enough. Besides pewdiepie what other youtuber made a ridiculous amount of money?

There's been a huge renaissance of online content as an alternative entertainment model lately, but that pretty much dies the moment people can't monetize it.

Like athletes, they're paid according to the value they create. Mass appeal is very lucrative. It's not like there's any grand overseeing force deciding that Internet celebrities get more money than doctors; it's simply how the money flows through the economy.

Depends on your definition of value. It is absurd to suggest that youtubers and athletes are more valuable to society than doctors and scientists. It is an inefficiency of a capitalist system.

The difference is that Youtubers - like pro athletes, actors, musicians, and other entertainers - create a product that can be consumed by millions of people simultaneously, whereas doctors can only cater to one person at a time. Scientists *can* serve millions at once, but on a much slower time scale and with a much larger supporting cast, which dilutes their "cut".

Besides, would you rather the large corporations that buy ad time on Youtube keep their money? It's not like they're going to just donate it to doctors or scientists out of the goodness of their heart.

Adding the "usefulness" of all youtubers and athletes and comparing it to the added "usefulness" of doctors and scientists, I'd say the latter come out on top. Adding the amount of money that all Youtubers and athletes combined make and comparing it to the money all scientists and doctors combined make... I have no idea, but it wouldn't be crazy to suggest they come out proportionately.

I disagree. In a society where almost everything is readily at hand - it makes sense for entertainers to be among the most valued.

It's like that one episode of Star Trek Voyager where they find that utopian society that's so bored out of their mind that they'll trade almost anything just for new entertainment.

Simply the revenue that they generate. Again, mass appeal is extremely lucrative. A few cents each from a million people is tens of thousands of dollars, and everyone involved in reaching those million people absolutely deserves to have a fair cut of that revenue based on how significant a role they played.

CountessRolab posted...

Comparing individual youtubers to individual doctors? That's actually pretty debatable. One could pretty easily argue that entertaining a million people is a greater improvement to the world's collective quality of life than saving the lives of a thousand people, and even nobel prize-winning scientists don't make much of an impact, individually.

Collectively, doctors and scientists play a more valuable role in society than youtubers, certainly, but collectively, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that doctors and scientists are paid more than youtubers. Not every youtuber is Pewdiepie, after all. The vast majority are lucky if they make enough to get by, and it's pretty common for them to have other jobs and just be treating youtubing as a hobby that makes a little bit of supplemental income.

The really big Youtubers will be fine. Even if they got completely demonetized they'd still have their big fat Patreons. The ones who get hit really hard are the medium-sized channels of which the people running them can't afford to put the same amount of time and energy in without ad revenue.

I don't see it as affecting much in general. As you point out, the most popular channels will still have alternative revenue streams -- most of the channels I watch get most of their money from Patreon, not ad revenue -- and, as a result, there shouldn't be *that* much of a drop in activity with the possible exception of channels working on tighter budgets who actually invest in their content (ie, not the LPers, vloggers, etc, who are going to be fine anyway).

Likewise, it won't hurt lesser channels that greatly who likely aren't making enough to do it full-time anyway. Honestly, if it does lead to a drop in the activity of bigger channels, it could arguably break up some monopolies and give them a place at the table.

Of course, the way that a *lot* of the things have been handled now mostly hurts the worst channels anyway, the guys who clickbait by taking extreme positions on sensationalized topics.
