I think it depends on a) how many jobs you've held b) how long you held each job and c) the amount of time that took place hopping between positions.

When you first get hired on you're wasting time on getting people to train you, and working at lower capacity yourself until you get up to speed.

People don't want to waste their time with someone who leaves before returning that investment.

It is generally not a good thing, but it isnt necessarily a bad thing either. Just be uo front on why you are job hopping, or if the reasons are bad, say that you are exploring your options and trying to find a career rather than just a job.

And what types of job. There isn't a lot of expectation of retention for burger flipping and pumping gas. But if you don't last six weeks, there's going to be questions.

I personally know several of friends and acquaintances who "job-hopped"(staying in 3-4 jobs for between 6 months-1 year for each of those jobs) from one job to another, for either financial reasons (either getting paid less than their worth or working in a job that doesn't even require a college degree) or to change work schedules for school, that now work in IT/Engineering jobs that are currently stable for them.

Six days or six months?

I think it just depends on the position. I held a bunch of different jobs before I finished college. No one cared then. They might care now though.

But it's also kind of expected in a field where head hunting is a thing.

Yeah I think you need to be able to explain the reasoning behind it if a prospective employer asks, but on the other hand you don't necessarily have to include every job ever held on the resume if it isn't relevant.

Pretty much. There's no way in hell people who've held several of jobs, can scrunch all employers they've worked for, into one Microsoft Word page for a work resume, since employers prefer a brief description of a candidate's work experience. Even if that candidate had a lot of employers under his/her resume, I doubt all of them are relevant work experiences to employers, depending on the field of work.

Yeah Its perceived as bad. They want you to stay as your wages stagnate instead of having to hire someone at current market value. Within a year things change drastically, more so than your meager pay bump will. Thats why if you stay long enough pretty soon fresh coworkers will be hired at what you're making and soon eclipse you.

I think it's a combination of age, skill, field, and position.

A student in college can job hop easily without many questions asked if he/she is a good student with people skills. Most employers can immediately tell that they won't be around for long, but will consider them an investment because it's monkey labor-- what they really care about is the customer service because that's a special package that occurs as soon as they're hired.

If you're a manager who job hops, each job had better be an improvement over the previous or it might raise a few eyebrows.

It looks like you can't hold down a steady job, which is a problem. It also makes you look like you won't keep a job at their company long either. Granted, if you work in retail, that's more expected.

Depends on the job and how long you're there for. I personally don't list places I wasn't at for long on my resume, no matter the reason.

I know a lot of minimum-wage and a few dollars above don't care around here, or view it as "a wide array of work experience". I have quite a few friends get tired of the BS and switch jobs every couple of months and they get hired relatively quickly. I don't know if this would hold true for a higher level job.

Conversely, I've only held a couple of jobs and some places I've interviewed for have tried to pigeonhole me into those specific things because they think that's all I can do, so there are pros and cons. I read somewhere in college that our generation averages something like 5 jobs before they find their career, so it's probably okay if you jump around every six months or year.

For crap jobs anyone can do, don't worry about it and don't list the "hoppiest" ones. No one cares if you worked at a gas station, a deli and a McDs in one month. They dont even need to know.

I wouldn't worry.

TBQH, and I know NOTHING about this one as I have no college experience, I'd imagine that hopping between jobs that use your degree would probably look good in a sense.

If you're moving too much between managment positions, simply display the qualities of a person who is "looking for the right fit" AKA IM hiring YOU to employ ME. This has worked for me everytime.

I also try to come off as someone who subconsciously lets everyone around them know that I am well taken care of, to the point where I can shop around for a job because im just that responsible with money that I can be unemployed for a period of time.
