It was an easy to produce livestock that poor former slaves were able to raise and became a staple of many of their diets. Same thing with watermelon. Racists decided to bash them for actually eating something because of course racists will target anything they can.

Anyway, the mockery comes from the plantation days, where chicken was considered a good meal for the workers, and then even into the 1920s it got picked up worse as a stereotype because they did legit like fried chicken because they featured chicken in their fried recipes, then some publications made certain ad campaigns with a dark skinned character as liking fried chicken, and it stuck as a stereotype.

Well, for the Mexicans, that's a regional preference, but even that preference has spread to whites.

People tend to love the same food, there are some acquired tastes, such as hot and spicy, which not all of the populace can get used to, but in general everyone likes to eat the same kind of food - shrimp, bacon, chicken, rice, cake, steak, lobster, bread, and cheese.

And ice cream is the universal treat for all mankind since they are kids.

What? Lol, uhh, it's fast food- if you have income, you can afford it. And it's according on what you plan on ordering.

Still, they have mostly fried chicken items, and the line stays long, with mostly white folks from what I've seen.

Everyone loves fried chicken. I never got this one either. In fact, one time I was sitting in KFC eating and a white guy, a black guy, and a First Nations guy (a stereotype exists here about them loving chicken) came in, laughing and talking, and sat down to a meal. Seemed like the perfect counter to that myth.

It's a way to be racist without being racist. It's seemingly a benign stereotype, like TC says who doesn't like it? But, it's wrapped up in an overall offensive portrayal that can't be separated.

So if a white guy shouts at a black man "Bet you're gonna get fried chicken", it means so much more than the words.

It's only seemingly benign to ignorant people. And I don't mean ignorant as a put down but just people who truly don't know any better. It's kind of endearing in a way when people don't understand when racist fuckery is just that but it's also bad because there are still people who will very much abuse that naivete to uphold that fuckery. Look at Obama. So, so many racist fucks (including elected officials) propagated the same racist imagery from literally 100 years ago because they could not STAND a black president. It's one thing to say you disagree with policies and that kinda shit but portraying him as a minstrel caricature with fried chicken and watermelon? Fuck those pieces of shit. I know it's cliche and all but "those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it" so people gotta be caught up.
