Solaris is nearly perfect (but I believe all of Tarkovsky's films besides Nostalgia are). Perfectly linking the scientific elements of Lem's novel with Tarkovsky's perfect vision, creating a film that explores the emotions of humanity, what it means to be human and what it means to feel love, better than any film I've ever seen I believe. I watched it and I've got to say... skip the first hour. Nothing happens in the first hour. There are some small amounts of plot being set up, but none of it matters for the rest of the film. There is, I'm not joking, a scene that's like ten minutes long of just a dude in a car, then an overhead shot of the highway, then the dude again, then the highway, etc. until you go crazy. A full hour of runtime of this film can be totally skipped over. Basically, skip to the part where he's actually on the space station. Then the movie is excellent. Just a huge waste of an hour first. The George Clooney one in English from a few years back is good, too. It gets to the space station in about 15 minutes, if I remember correctly.
