No, this is just a general misjudgment it has nothing to do with race. Literally everyone regardless of sex or race are outraged by stories like this. Shit if anything it's going to be primarily white people who send this dude death threats, vandalize his property, or worse for the rest of his life.

The sentencing sounds less like it was overly forgiving of him and more like it was the best they could do. The article mentions that several witnesses were unwilling to testify (which would mean the video couldn't be submitted as evidence) and even the parents of the victim didn't want the guy to get severe jail time, instead wanting him to receive treatment.

the whole situation seems fucked, but he did two years in prison and is receiving treatment

and with the american prison system, this almost certainly is true:

“If Grooms was sent to prison for a long period of time rather than being sentenced to probation, he more than likely would be a greater risk to the community after his release than he will be after serving the sentence he received,” he said.
