Back in the day I was a huge fan of the Archie Sonic The Hedgehog comics. I picked it up around issue #30 and was hooked up to just before the 100th issue, at which point I kinda lost interest and never came back. Well about a month ago we were talking about this in the VGM chat and I felt the urge to read through them again. Luckily Ed Bellis was able to hook me up with the comics once again on the condition that I keep him updated throughout my readthrough. Well then, I thought, why not just make a topic about it?

So here we are, every Sonic comic produced, including the spinoffs. Bellis was also generous enough to provide me a list with the order I should read them in, as well as a list naming the more significant comics, of which I will comment more about. I guess I should say there will be spoilers in my commentary, but that's to be expected.

With that said, let's get started shall we?

Sonic The Hedgehog Mini-Series, Issue #0
February 1993
external image

Before we can kick off the main series we got four mini-series issues to plow through. I can tell just by the chrome dome burn on the cover that we got some cheese ahead of us.

"Don't Cry For Me Mobius" is the first story of the issue. Some differences from what we'll see in the future: Robotnik's got a slightly different design, Princess Sally is red (which I did not know about), and Rotor is called "Boomer" here. We start with Robotnik trying to mega-muck Sonic who of course is too fast for him. First great lines: Robotnik complains that Sonic jumping is not fair, which Sonic replies "All's fair in love and war, Doc...and this ain't love!" followed by the burn, "Then again, maybe it is! I do love to drive him crazy!" Siiiiick. Eventually Sonic gets trapped between Robotnik and a Caterkiller. Oh no, how will he ever get out of this one? If you guessed jump over a mega-muck which hits Caterkiller instead, you would be right. Sonic tells us, the readers, where Knothole Village is located. I wonder how long they keep up with the characters being aware that we're reading a comic. Tails tries to mimic running at sonic speed and ends up tripping over a rock. Poor guy. Part I ends with a water leakage in the village, which worries Antoine that Robotnik might use dreaded "trickle down" technology to find and destroy them.

Part 2 opens with Robotnik in his office, complete with a nameplate on his desk, which reads: "Dr. Robotnik: Supreme Dictator, Industrial Polluter, Megalomaniac, Corrupt Politician, Underhanded Reprobate, Rain Forest Ravager, Puppy Kicker, Oil Spill Coordinator, Holiday Hater, Insurance Salesman." Man, this guy is pure evil. Anyway, it turns out the leak is caused by weeping willow trees literally ****ing crying because Robotnik has been mowing down other trees in the forest. They get ambushed by Robotnik, who's dishing out the checker wrecker ball from the first game. Sonic finds a power ring hidden in a well and wrecks his ship, but Robotnik uses a Buzzbomber to escape. The Freedom Fighters then plant some saplings so the willows stop crying, and that wraps up this story.

Intermission showing us Sonic's Six Speed Settings: Sub-Sonic (when he's underwater), Ultra Sonic (faster than Carl Lewis. No I am not joking), Super-Sonic (faster than a cheetah), Trans-Sonic (faster than a car), Hyper-Sonic (faster than a jet), and Warp-Sonic (faster than the speed of light). Also we cannot neglect his Sonic Spin, which Sonic comments, "I'm feeling spine and dandy!" XFD

"Oh No--Robo! No Mo' Mobo!" is the second story, which is a backstory of how Robotnik ended up terrorizing Mobius. Uncle Chuck is introduced here, as well as his shop Chuck's Chili Stand (sign on building: We deliver...and how!" Nice. Robotnik has started putting up signs declaring his taking over the city, with the slogan "Have fun - go to jail!" Anyway, Robotnik orders two hundred chili dogs to get Sonic away from Chuck which leads to his capture (and his dog Muttski as well). Reason for arrest: smiling. You read that right. After Sonic avoids being crushed by the wrecker ball, he realizes that he was set up, and rushes back to the chili stand (Editor's note here: Sonic is going faster than the speed of sound...the "zoom" noise will appear later this week! As if adding "zoom" will let me know that he is in fact moving that fast. Sonic arrives to find the Swatbots destroying the shop, to be replaced by what else...a toxic dump. Sonic starts attacking, which prompts a Swatbot command, "Terminate with extreme prejudice!" What a hate crime! I should add that Sonic does not know who Robotnik is yet, just that he's up to no good. We get our first Ro-Butt-Nik insult here. Sonic encounters Sally for the first time, who reveals that her father, King Acorn has also been captured by Robotnik. Sonic shows no interest in her problems, but Sally stops him before he takes off. It's revealed that Sonic's middle name is Maurice, which still cracks me up to this day. They find Robotnik, as well as an already enslaved Uncle Chuck and Muttski, but before they are captured as well, Sonic creates a tornado in order to escape. Sally tells him about the Freedom Fighters and Knothole and asks him to join, which of course Sonic agrees to do so. The story ends here, with the last page showing us Sonic's shoes and how they don't burn out due to his speed. That wraps up the first comic.

The issue did a good job of establishing the backstory and getting all the characters established into their roles. It also shows just how much of a prick Robotnik is, which even I never fully realized until now. This post is going to get flagged, but that really is the best word to describe Robotnik at this point. There's really no way anyone would want to root for him, even if you're a villain lover.

Wow that's a lot of stuff I wrote, wasn't expecting that. Anyway, that wraps up our very first issue of Sonic The Hedgehog, and it looks promising for the future.

Sonic The Hedgehog Mini-Series Issue #1
March 1993
external image

That's an awesome cover by the way. Sally is now pink for the next few issues. Let's get started.

"Run, Sally, Run!" is the first story. Sally is being a ***** to Sonic, so of course he suspects that Antoine's got something to do with it. It turns out Sally is going to Robotropolis to negotiate with Robotnik about releasing her father, and doesn't want interference with the rest of the Freedom Fighters. Of course they don't listen, so Sonic, Tails, and Antoine take off and run into Sally talking with a Buzzbomber. The bot flies her to the negotiating spot as the rest of the crew get trapped in a cage. Buzzbomber dumps her in a smokestack and drops into the factory where Robotnik is waiting. Naturally he betrays Sally and sends her off to be roboticized. Sally you are an idiot. The roboticizer was apparently assembled in Mexico, because Mexico is evil or something? Just before Sally is thrown in, Sonic shows up just in time (prompting a surprised Robotnik to shout "Gadzooks!"). They were able to escape by a Sonic Spin, which can cut through anything. Robotnik counters that it can't cut thru (yes he says thru) an atomic ray gun, but Antoine pickpockets the gun before he can pull it out. Sally questions why Antoine and Tails are there, "oh no! Not you two, too?" which leads to Sonic's punchline, "Well it is Twosday!" Good one. Sonic destroys the roboticizer (which is called the Robo-Machine here, so it's not the machine we will come to know), as Robotnik comments that it will take at least a few issues to repair it. They escape by holding up Robotnik with the ray gun. Back at Knothole Sally gets all pissy because she wanted to get thrown into the Robo-Machine. She was wearing boots invented by Rotor that was supposedly going to reverse the effects of the machine once she was inside. Somehow I don't think that plan would have worked at all. She should be more appreciative of Sonic and company. Story ends with Sally storming off.

Intermission about Sonic sometimes becoming frustrated that he's so fast. Why...because he's too good at baseball, rounding the bases before you can hear the crack of the bat. Sorry Sonic, but you don't HAVE to run that fast...

"Something Fishy" is the second story. It starts off with Sonic fishing, eventually catching a Jaws. Realizing that Robotnik is up to no good, he chases the Jaws underwater to discover a cave (in the comics, Sonic can not only swim, but can also apparently stay under for long periods of time). Well, that turns out to be a trap, as Sonic gets caught in a net which is carrying him to an underwater roboticizer (the "Waterproof Robot Maker"). Meanwhile, Rotor and Tails arrive at the dock to find it destroyed and Sonic missing, so they need to head into the water to find out what happened to Sonic. Rotor's Bathysphere debuts here (the FF's submarine, which Tails comments, "Now that's what I call a Sub-Plot!"). These jokes aren't going away anytime soon folks. Sonic uses a Sonic Spin to break out of the net, but it causes him to use up all his air, so now he's drowning. Comment from Jaws, "Aww, you'd break my heart...if I had one!" Oh snap. You know what happens next: Rotor and Tails show up just in time to blast Jaws away, and the air bubbles produced from the submarine allow Sonic to get his air back. One Sonic Spin later, and the Robot Maker is destroyed, day is saved. Rotor suggests it's time for lunch, and Sonic gives us the ending punchline, "Okay, but let's do chili dogs...I've lost my taste for seafood!"

Last ministories: The first has Rotor telling us about characters that are slow, which leads to this: "But if you think I'm slow, check the speed of this anti-pollution bill as it goes through Congress!" GJ sending a environmental message to us Rotor. The second is Sonic playing doubles tennis by himself, cause he's so fast. The third is old photographs of Sonic as a kid, all of which just have him running really fast.

This issue wasn't as good as the first. Run Sally Run was a good story, but it went downhill from there, and the ministories were lame. Hopefully they'll rebound next time.

Sonic The Hedgehog Mini-Series Issue #2
April 1993
external image

How about a bad cover this time?

Only one story in this one, "A Crowning Achievement." First hints that Sonic and Sally like each other. Sally has something important to tell Sonic, who wonders if it's why she changed her hair from blonde to brunette. Sally scoffs at that remark, but she thinks to herself if he likes her better as a brunette. We also get Sonic's thoughts, which is that he loves her dark hair but he'll never tell her that. Actually, Sally reveals the Magic Crown of the Acorn Kings, powered by the four Freedom Emeralds. Supposedly they hold great power, and Sally wants to use it to find her father. They open the box it's contained in, but whoops it's gone! Sonic blames Antoine and his Royal Guard who are supposed to keep constant watch over the box, which leads to the theory that one of the guardsmen is a spy for Robotnik. How to find out? Sonic runs in circles to burn the rubber off his sneakers, which creates smoke, which then sets off the sprinklers Rotor had installed. One of the guardsmen shorts out, revealing itself to be a robot. Robotnik now has the crown and scattered the Freedom Emeralds all over Mobius. Then the spy initiates its self-destruct mechanism, which prompts Sonic to pick him up and run off with him before he explodes, taking out Knothole and everyone with it.

Sally thinks Sonic is dead and starts crying cause she never told him she loved--but then is cut off by Antoine's exclamation that Sonic has returned just fine. Sonic wants her to finish what she was saying, which Sally awkwardly responds that she loved his recipe for pumpkin pie. Right, as if Sonic can bake. Or cook. Anyway, Sonic was able to launch the bot out of the tree stump entrance using his Warp Speed before it went KABLOOEY (as the comic describes it). With Sonic still at the surface, he notices a Robotnik blimp with many escorts heading off somewhere, so it's time for a mission. Sally forces Sonic and Antoine to work together for this one, which both of them reluctantly accept. I should note that, while most people who've read the comic or seen the SATAM show know this, but Sonic and Antoine really do not like each other.

So the two of them follow the blimp with their own hot air balloon, but forget that the Buzzbombers and Bat Brains clearly know they're there. The badniks pop their balloon, so Antoine bails out with his parachute. Sonic on the other hand decides to Sonic Spin across the bots to reach the blimp and pop it. Antoine catches Sonic in freefall, but the same fate is not met for the bots. The swatbot pilot crashes into the ground, and out pops a Freedom Emerald hidden within it. The swatbot reveals the plan to separate the emeralds, one by air, land, sea, and underground. Having retrieved the "air" emerald, Sonic forces Antoine to return to Sally with the emerald as he takes off on his own to find the others.

Intermission time. The Top Ten Reasons Why Sonic The Hedgehog Is The Coolest Comic Book Around:

10. The Sonic Comic requires no batteries!
9. It addresses the environment!
8. Sonic is blue, so he matches most of your wardrobe ("My spine looks divine!" Sonic says) [Also, he does not match most of my wardrobe]
7. It has no villains who are mutants (with Robotnik saying "Don't be so sure..." as he reveals Wolverine claws!)
6. Nor does this title rely on guest stars to help boost sales (as Sonic tells Michaelangelo to scram)
5. It has a foxy female lead character who wears an unusual two-piece outfit (already pandering to the furry crowd)
4. It isn't pre-bagged with a die-cut, gold foil cover and hologram trading card (this is a bad thing? Also I don't know what comic this is addressed towards)
3. It contains absolutely no cholesterol!
2. Sonic's adventures are soon to be a major motion picture starring Michael J. Fox (how come this never happened?)
1. Sonic The Hedgehog won't be "dying" anytime soon (and it hasn't!)

Hope you enjoyed that.

Back to the story: Sonic runs into Tails fishing as he's about to find the "sea" emerald. His feet get caught up in the string of Tails fishing pole, so off Tails goes as well. They return to the cave that Sonic was trapped in last issue, and lo and behold there's another emerald. Jaws tries to get his revenge from losing in the last issue crashing into Sonic & Tails head-on. But wait...it was just a drawing on the cave wall! Jaws is knocked silly...good thing Tails always carries a waterproof marker!

Tails takes off to return the emerald as Sonic spots a swatbot carrying another emerald. Sonic quickly snatches it, but of course that was a trap as Sonic falls deep underground. A Burrobot, carrying the fourth emerald, steals the one Sonic is carrying. The bot tries to impale Sonic with its drill, but Sonic jumps out of the way just in time and tries to escape. He quips, "I'm living on burrowed time here." Eventually he uses his speed to throw the Burrobot off balance, and gets the emeralds back and takes off. However, he cannot find his way of the catacombs, trapped there for hours. Finally, he figures out that he needs to go up to get out, and pulls off his most powerful Sonic Spin yet, which conveniently leads him right through the floor of Rotor's shop. Minor note: Sally's habit of impatiently tapping her foot debuts here, and IIRC she also did this on the show, so that was a nice touch. Anyway, Sally is crowned and declares that the power of the Crown will stop Robotnik and restore Mobius to its former glory. Then we get an epilogue of Robotnik complaining that he didn't appear in the comic with the biggest story yet.

Last ministory explains what Sonic's spines are capable of, with the joke being that Sally uses them as a bulletin board. In addition, this is the first issue to feature reader mail. I'll post any interesting ones, but none are in this one, just people saying they love Sonic and such.

Well this was the first big story of the comic, and it was okay. I think Sonic got a hold of those emeralds way too easily, but they're still establishing Sonic being way past cool and awesome and stuff, so he needs to appear invincible. I wonder when his first moment of weakness appears in the series...

Sonic The Hedgehog Mini-Series Issue #3
May 1993
external image

The final issue of the mini-series, and the last one of the night for me. Let's get started!

"Sonic Flashback" starts things off. Robotnik knocks Sonic off a cliff, and as he fades to unconsciousness, Sonic imagines if he was able to go back in time and rearrange history. It starts off with a normal Uncle Chuck just finishing up inventing the magical ring, when Sonic runs in complaining about Robotnik being mean (they are both kids here). Robotnik came from a broken home (which Sonic says that he probably broke it), so Uncle Chuck has been trying to help him out. Robby, as Chuck likes to call him, already shows evil tendencies, building robots that obey his command and hating hedgehogs. Chuck tries to call him down because Sonic is being an asswad to him before getting to work on the tractor. Problem is Robotnik took some parts from the tractor without telling him, which causes it to lose control, and since there are no brakes, Chuck ends up crashing into the barn as well as Robotnik. Sonic ends up using the magic ring to get them to the hospital in mere seconds, and they end up cured. Robotnik naturally blames Chuck for running him over even though it was his fault in the first place.

One of his robots confesses that Robotnik did in fact steal parts from the tractor, which pisses Chuck off. Robotnik is GROUNDED, rightfully. It doesn't work, because Robotnik uses all the machines in the house to make a robot to get revenge on Chuck and Sonic. Sonic uses a garden hose to wrap up the robot's legs, toppling it over and destroying it. Robotnik runs off swearing revenge...and then it's back to reality as Sonic wakes up, just narrowly missing get flamethrower'd by Robotnik. Sonic escapes, saying that both kid and adult Robotnik suck, and that's the story.

#16:

"Why Ask Spy?" is story #2. We get some humor to kick things off as Rotor and Sally trick Sonic by having Rotor pretend to be a robot. Sonic, naive as he is, gets fooled by it very easily. On to business...they put the robot mask on Sonic and have him chase Sally in the Great Forest, but we aren't told exactly what the plan is yet. Tails sees this and freaks out, thinking Sonic is actually a robot. They choose to let Tails believe this, with Sonic taking off and Sally declaring that Tails saved her. She asks that they keep the incident a secret, so of course Tails prints a ****load of newspapers about Robot Sonic and how Tails himself is a hero. Buzzbomber swoops in and snatches a paper from him, and he doesn't even pay for it! So evil. The badnik reports to Robotnik, only to find that Sonic is already there working his scheme on him. Both Robotnik and Buzzbomber smartly consider that this may be a trick, so Robotnik tests Sonic by asking him the location of Knothole Village.

Before Sonic gets his cover blown, an alarm goes off, signaling a disturbance in one of the factories (the crab compound). Looks like it was Sally and Antoine who set it off, but when Sonic arrives, he stops so fast that the mask flies off and clamps onto Antoine's foot. Sonic sarcastically says what an unfortunate accident that was. A note on Antoine that I forgot to mention earlier: he's normally portrayed as a coward (especially on the show), but in the mini-series he hasn't displayed any of that at all. Still pretentious as ever though. Anyway, Sonic enters the compound and is met with a surprise: he discovers Uncle Chuck working on assembling Crabmeats. I should note that they say that Uncle Chuck is a robot, but he definitely does not look like one. All he has are swirly eyes which make him appear to be brainwashed. With that said...apparently Chuck's quota is assembling 75 million Crabmeats (holy ****!). Sonic tries to talk him out of his brainwashing to no avail. He also tries to embrace Muttski (who definitely looks the most robotic out of any other roboticized animal in the series so far), only for Muttski to attempt biting him. Sonic is real pissed off now; he returns to Robotnik and tells him that Chuck attempted an unauthorized coffee break which has since been corrected, and then proceeds to enter the location of Knothole in the missile computer. Instead of Knothole, Sonic sets the destination for Robotnik's largest factory, where all the Buzzbombers are made. Then he clamps the robot mask onto Robotnik's ass and we get our end-of-story punchline, "Glad to see Robotnik get it in THE END!" Good lord.

No ministories in this issue. The first story was interesting but it's also non-canon so it ultimately doesn't mean anything. For a what-if story it's alright though. The second story is what matters, and it's a great one. It's the first time we see Sonic get real serious about something (after failing to get Chuck and Muttski to recognize him), and although in the end he drops the cheesy punchline, we get that first "don't **** with Sonic" moment which is great. Good story to end the mini-series, now it's on to the real thing!

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #1
July 1993
external image

Here we go, the first issue of the main series! Good cover. One thing I want to take notice of is the price tag as we go through the issues. This would cost you $1.25 in 1993. Let's see how much that hikes up as we go along.

"Meet Me At The Corner Of Hedgehog & Vine" is the lead story to begin the series. The very first page is Robotnik hanging Sonic from a noose. Holy ****, what an image to show first impressions to kids. Sonic's tongue green and his eyes are bulging out. Well if you didn't think Robotnik was evil before you know now. Then if that wasn't enough, Robotnik DECAPITATES him with his evil villain cane. Series over already!

...Well it turns out it was only a pinata that Robotnik was smashing to vent his frustrations. In walks a Swatbot holding a plant, so the big guy smashes its head in because one of his laws is no plants. The swatbot barely is able to explain that it's a robotic plant that can be used against the FF by having Burrobot plant the seeds all over the forest. To thank the swatbot for this idea that Robotnik clearly came up with himself, he tosses it into the robot disposal like the ass that he is. The first victim of these plants is Antoine, who was attempting to get Sally to notice him by finding some flowers for her. Hearing his screams, Sonic rushes to the rescue, but since it's Antoine, we get a great line, "Sonic The Hedgehog never deserts a friend in need! But since there's none around right now, I might as well help you!" It's funny how both Sonic and Robotnik can be total asses to their allies sometimes. They get a tangled up Antoine back into Knothole, where Rotor jokes about using a chainsaw to get him out. Antoine faints at that notion, which allows Rotor to just pull all the plants off him. Tails walks in and, not realizing the nature of the plants, decides to water them. Everyone thinks they will mutate as a result, but instead it short circuits. Knowing how to destroy the plants, the FF end up...not doing anything, because it ends up raining outside, which destroys all the plants in the forest. A pissed off Robotnik tosses Burrobot in the robot disposal (you know a punchline is ending it too: Burrobot pleads that all he did was seed the forest, which Robotnik responds, "I've seed what you've done, that's why I'm planting you in the trash!"). That ends the story.

We get two bumper stickers we can cut out and stick to our cars! "Honk if you <3 Sonic", "Have you hugged your hedgehog today?", "I'd rather be playing Sonic The Hedgehog", and "If you can read this, you should be reading Sonic The Hedgehog comics!"

"You Bet My Life!" is the second story. It starts with the FF saying that Sonic is their last hope for something. Since there's some suspense to it, I figure it's gonna end up lame, and it is: they need Sonic to fold their map of Mobius up right. Apparently Robotnik is delivering a speech in the Casino Night Zone and they need to know where it is. We still get the 4th wall breaking here, and Sonic implores us to pop in Sonic 2 and get him to Casino Night...or just turn the page. That I shall do. Sonic arrives to find Robotnik's casino, which is called "Renobotnik." I guess none of the robots here have been programmed to stop Sonic here because he's just waltzing around freely. We see Robotnik preparing for his speech (with a sign on the wall saying "No spitting on stage, except for Robotnik"), when he spots Sonic walking through the entrance of the stage hall. Robotnik debuts his new robot, Orbinaut, who promptly tosses a maceball at Sonic's head.

A subdued Sonic is trapped inside a glass ball and stuffed inside a giant pinball machine. He gets the crap kicked out of him in there, but before Robotnik can toss him in a second time, a swatbot tells him that someone won 50 cents in the casino. Sucks for that guy, because one of the rules of Renobotnik is "If you try to beat the house, the house beats you...WITH A HAMMER." While he was gone, Sonic was able to use his spines to cut through the ball, so when he was placed back in the machine, the launcher shattered the glass and freed him. Orbinaut tries to attack Sonic, but he deflects a maceball into a swatbot and Robotnik's head. Speaking of which, that should have pierced through his brain (and probably Sonic as well when he was clocked earlier), but maybe they both just got really lucky. Sonic makes the casino explode (not shown how exactly) and saves the day.

Ministories: 1)Acorn Awards ceremony, which Sonic wins every one of them of course; 2) one where a reader mail asks him at what speed do his legs disappear and look like spinning wheels. This one's pretty funny actually, as he goes through his Six Speeds (from Mini-Series #0). His legs get blurry at Trans-Sonic speed, but he ends up running straight into a tree branch and knocks himself silly; 3) we get the recipe for making a Sonic chili dog, and it looks legit. Sonic quips about this supposing to be a funny comic book, so Sally smashes a pie in his face.

The first story was terrible. I normally don't like plant-related stories because they usually end in a stupid way, and this was no different. Horrible way to start the main series. The second one was better but didn't quite make up for it, so overall this was a letdown. However, Issue #2 is the first one I was told to emphasize on, so I'm expecting good things from it. I'll have that for you tomorrow.

I honestly feel that Sonic is a legit good comic now. Not amazing, but good and great compared to what it used to be. I've never been into comics but when DC's the New 52 came out I thought that it would be a good place to try to get into them. I picked up a couple Sonic comics on one of my trips to the comics store just for the hell of it. I was amazed at how much better it was in terms of art and story compared to when I stopped reading around issue #60 when i was like 11.

I hope you're including Sonic Universe in this readthrough cuz they are pretty great too!

Having this much of a write up for just one comic is ridiculous when there's hundreds to get through.

It's not too bad. I write them up as I read through it, so each issue doesn't take more than 15 minutes. This wasn't designed to be completed in a week anyway so just enjoy the ride.

I feel like I'd write less though after all the cheesy punchlines go away.

Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaah! Great topic; I love Archie Sonic. Does Spork really have the whole series? I would kill - or maybe even spend hundreds of dollars over several years - to have that collection.

Let's see if I can cut down on the summary

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #2
August 1993
external image

We squeal for real indeed.

"Triple Trouble" is the first story. Coconuts, from the AoStH show, makes his debut here in Robotnik's latest attempt to kill Sonic. He tries using exploding coconuts against him, but Sonic and Tails take care of him rather easily. Next up, the legendary Scratch and Grounder! They manage to tie up Sonic, but end up arguing with each other over who will take credit for capturing him. This allows Sonic to recover and defeat them handily. End of story. Wow, even if I tried to make a long summary I couldn't do it. There weren't even any good cheesy punchlines here. Just a tribute to the show it appears.

"Vertigo A Go Go!" is the next story. Sonic ends up in an alternate dimension, where he meets Cal and Al (Cal is always upside down, Al is always horizontal to Sonic). Sonic is suspicious immediately but soon learns that they never even heard of Robotnik before. Sonic gets thrown all over the place as the dimension gets trippier and trippier, but eventually he lands back in Mobius. The End. Already?

Ministory about Sally and Rotor smashing Sonic's face with foil to make special covers for future comic books. Still breaking the 4th wall here. There's also pinups of Sonic and Sally, with each telling us not to tell the other character, and they both have big hearts above their heads. Cute.

"All The Mail's About Tails" is the third story, though it's really just a ministory hyping a possible Tails mini-series in the future. Sonic also reads a fan mail that asks him why he's always naked. Whoops.

Well that covers this issue, but it was just establishing characters that may or may not ever appear in this comic again. Not a whole lot going on, so if you wanted shorter summaries, this was the perfect issue to do it!

I did get the pun. The comic even bolds it to make sure. I know they reappear in the comic again but I don't remember what they do (I know when it is, it'll take some time to get there). Also I made an error: Issue #2 was released in September, not August. ANYWAY...

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #3
October 1993
external image

No smoking slogan on the cover. I knew Sonic had a vice.

"The Bomb Bugs Me!" is the first story. Neat add-in: Rotor and Sally are watching Sonic on a TV Monitor, and under it lists the zones from Sonic 2, except for Hill Top for some reason. Anyway, time for actual story: During a routine scouting in Robotropolis, Sonic overhears Robotnik mentioning that he is in possession of a bomb, which freaks the gang out (Rotor in particular is so scared, he says this, "That's why the call it a 'Cold War'...because we'll all be...*gulp* on ice!" and then starts singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot). Their plan? To protest in front of Robotnik's HQ of course. This page has two great jokes that I feel the need to post:

Swatbot: Look my lumpy liege...protestors!
Robotnik: Impossible! I've outlawed all religious freedom!
Swatbot: Not Protestants! Protestors!

and

Robotnik: And look who it is! Sonic, Princess Sally and that overweight walrus! How can anyone let himself get so obese?

Robotnik and his army of swatbots charge at them, but smash into the wall, knocking the big guy out. Turns out they were using a video projection of themselves protesting against the wall. Sonic & Sally use this time to locate the bomb. Rotor, disguised as Robotnik, orders a Crabmeat to bring him the bomb, but plants suspicion on himself for saying the word "please," and Crabmeat knows his master would never use that word. The bot tries to ambush Rotor, but is disposed of easily. Now get ready for this...

Rotor tries to get the gang to return to Knothole to analyze the bomb but Robotnik comes in saying that Rotor is a fake then Rotor says obviously Robotnik is lying but then Robotnik takes off a mask to reveal it's Rotor then Rotor takes off his mask to reveal it's Robotnik THEN they each take off about five more masks while arguing who is who. Confused? So is Sonic, so he busts out a Sonic Tornado to take care of all the disguises. They take a dizzied Rotor (the real one) back to Knothole. By the way, the bomb is just a small yellow package that says "The Bomb" on it. They open it reluctantly, but it turns out to be...bug spray. Robotnik's pantry was infested with bugs which was why he asked for the spray (which is called the "Bug Bomb"). The End!

Ministory of a turtle riding a rocket-powered skateboard. I can explain this but I think some things are better left unsaid! Then another one of Sonic speaking to himself on both sides of a phone line. He's very fast. And a third one with the FF making a joke newspaper making fun of Sally changing her hair from blonde to brunette, which makes her extremely pissed off.

"Rabbot Deployment" is the second story, and I just want to say IT'S ABOUT TIME. Up until this point Bunnie Rabbot was in one page of one issue of the comic, and it was a pinup of all the characters, good and evil, facing off against each other. She was all white in that too, definitely not close to the final design she'll come to have. Anyway, this is basically her origin story. Sonic and Rotor spot an innocent bunny rabbit with a southern accent getting captured by some swatbots, which immediately produces a great line...

Bunnie: Unhand me, you Yankee contraption!
Swatbot: Yankee? I'm an Orioles fan!

No wonder the swatbots keep getting their ass beat XFD. Anyway, the bots are driving a truck that's also a portable roboticizer, and she's promptly tossed inside. Sonic, praying there's time to save her, goes into Sonic Spin mode, decapitates the swatbots, and cuts into the roboticizer. He shuts it down, but a little too late; Bunnie's legs and left arm have been roboticized. Rotor is skeptical of bringing back to Knothole, thinking Robotnik can track her, but a passionate Sonic puts her health and safety first.

Sonic: Are we MICE or MEN?
Rotor: Neither!

They bring her back, and she joins the FF, just in time because a giant Burrobot is tearing down the Great Forest. Sonic races out of the tree stump entrance, but Bunnie pulls him back down just before he's run over by the Burrobot's treads. I'm only mentioning this because of this line from Sonic, "I was almost a Sonic Pancake!" I always love these kind of lines, and it's entirely because of Jill Sandwich. Anyway, Sonic is lured into a trap because he doesn't think before he acts, but Bunnie lifts the Burrobot with her robotic arm and drops the badnik on its head. Sonic finishes the job by burying the bot in a trench, and that's all folks.

Ministory displaying Robotnik's Rules (such as "No Fun"). Nothing exceptional though.

Well this write-up went long but it had to be. The first story had some great jokes and I just had to make that confusing paragraph. As for the 2nd, Bunnie Rabbot is probably my second favorite character in the series behind Sonic (it's mostly because I liked her in SATAM, especially that Southern accent), so any story emphasizing her is likely going to be more detailed. Overall this was a good issue. The first story you knew right away that the bomb was not going to be a bomb but the execution worked. Second story I already detailed, and the ministories weren't bad.

Reminder to let me know if there's anything I should keep track of during the series (except for cheesy jokes cause there's probably over 9000 of them)

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #4
November 1993
external image

"The Lizard Of Odd" is the first story of the issue. Robotnik swears that the next animal captured will become the ultimate killer robot, so of course the next one is a tiny salamander. He gives it a whirl anyway, but Buzzbomber accidentally sets the size control too high, which turns it into a gigantic robotic salamander. Apparently the bigger the robot is the harder it is to control, as the robot has full free will (and is evil) and thus Universalamander is born! The FF spot it on the monitor, and Sonic questions that Jurassic Park is already out on the Sega Genesis. Sonic rushes off to destroy it but is quickly eaten up by the bot. A Sonic Spin causes USalamander to spit him out. Lo and behold, we get our first Super Sonic appearance! I'll keep track of when he shows up. He blasts right through the bot's chest, then grabs a device Rotor made that shrinks the bot and promptly smashes him. End.

Several ministories: Crappy Antoine and Al/Cal ministories and a nifty Robotnik birthday card you can make, along with a Super Sonic pin-up. One more of Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts at a villain's audition. One more of Bunnie hairstyling on Sally (it looks awful)

"Tails' Little Tale" is next. Tails tries to be the hero while Sonic rests after the first story. He's able to take care of the lower level badniks like Orbinaut and gets cocky enough to attempt to defeat Robotnik by himself. He heads to Robotropolis but is quickly captured by swatbots. Luckily Sonic spotted him earlier and saves him from being roboticized, they escape, and that's it.

Nothing special, but we got a Tails story which is usually fun stuff.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #5
December 1993
external image

First up, "Olympic Trial & Errors." Robotnik has built a stadium to challenge Sonic & Co. to the Robotropolis Olympic Games. The deal: if Sonic can win only one out of four events, Robotnik will leave Mobius. If he loses all four, then the Freedom Fighters have to be roboticized. There's definitely a trap or several. While Sonic was chilling in a pond, a swatbot swapped his sneakers with a pair that drains his energy. Sonic quickly passes out before the Games begin, so Sally, Rotor, and Antoine take his place. They easily lose in long jump, swimming, and weight lifting. The last event is a race against a Buzzbomber. Meanwhile, Tails finds Sonic's real sneakers in some trash and brings them back to him. Sonic runs around the badnik to confuse it, giving Antoine enough time to barely win the race. Robotnik keeps his promise and leaves Mobius forever...YEAH RIGHT. He escapes to fight another day, and that's it.

Ministory of Sonic's ten second workout of him running across the world.

"Chomp On This, Chump!" is the second story. Rotor orders an ant farm which is naturally a trap set up by Robotnik ("We can ant-icipate the end of Sonic and his friends very soon!"). It ends up being a termite that grows the more it eats, and it starts eating up all the FF's stuff in the village. Sonic makes a log made out of pancake batter which ends up clamping the bot's mouth shut. Rotor reconfigures it and sends it to Robotropolis where it eats all of Robotnik's stuff. End.

Ministory of Sonic eating his food really fast and getting sick. In reader mail, someone sent a really long one asking what animal Sally was. Wow...

This issue sucked, that's all I have to say.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #6
January 1994
external image

"The Spin Doctor" is up first. We get our first video game adaptation, and I would never have guessed that it would be for Sonic Spinball. It follows through the first three levels (with an appearance by the creepy Robotnik scorpion. We don't get The Showdown other than a mimic of getting booted out of the volcano fortress (which is just Robotnik kicking him out instead of those slingshot socks breaking the glass in the game). That's it.

MInistory of a reader mail praising Antoine, but Sonic finds out that Antoine himself is writing it. Clever.

"Sonic's Christmas Carol" is next, and it's a reenactment of A Christmas Carol. Robotnik is Scrooge, Sonic is all three Ghosts, and Rotor apparently works for Robotnik. Basically the future is Robotnik thinks he has the battle won but a bomb he sent Rotor got returned to him after many years which end up killing him. Turns out it's all a dream, we get a Happy Holidays from Sonic, and that it. Definitely a non-canon story, but this is the first issue that Rotor is actually named Rotor, so that's what we get from here on out.

Definitely not an important issue. The Spinball tie-in was way too short...

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #7
February 1994
external image

"Uncle Chuck's Treasure" is the first story. The FF find a map of Chuck's buried treasure and set out to find it. Some swatbots spot them and tell Robotnik, who ambushes them at the treasure location. Sonic saves his friends by himself, but Robotnik gets away with the treasure. Sonic remembers what it was though, and chooses not to go after, because all it consists of is a bronze statue of Sonic's baby shoes (Badnik punchline: "Another de-feet at the hands of Sonic!").

Ministory of Sonic beating up his own shadow and Robotnik drawing a police sketch of Sonic.

"Sorceress In Distress" is next up. The FF are having a costume party, and Sally (a sorceress) goes off by herself to find a stick to complete her outfit. She finds one and pretends it has magical powers...until a geyser is set off by coincidence. She thinks the stick may actually have powers, and apparently so does Robotnik, who had been watching her. Robotnik is in love and asks her to marry him (apparently he doesn't realize that it is Sally). Sally plays along for fear of being discovered, but Robotnik immediately starts the ceremony. Sonic, who had been spying on her, uses his speed to attack Robotnik and escapes with Sally. She gives him a kiss in appreciation but then smacks him with the stick for disobeying her orders. End.

The stories weren't too bad I guess, better than last issue for sure.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #8
March 1994
external image

"Bot's All, Folks!" is the first story. Robotnik's got a new weapon to destroy Sonic...Botman! Yes it is a Batman rip-off, complete with a bat signal (although here it's a silhouette of Robotnik's face). Sonic gets his ass kicked for a bit but then he uses his speed to take apart Botman. However, Robotnik's got a Wolverine ripoff ready to go, but something goes wrong, and out comes a Wolvurkel bot. Yes, it looks like Urkel, and definitely a small nod to Jaleel White, who voiced Sonic in the shows. Next bot ripoff...Spawnmower! Sonic removes the spark plug wire and pushes it off a cliff. Then we get Magbot, Captain Marbot, and Mighty Bot, all quickly disposed. Robotnik escapes as usual, and that's it.

Sonic bowling pin-up.

"A Little Sonic Goes A Long Way" is next. First issue of Sonic playing the guitar I believe. He plays his music which somehow reaches all the way to Robotnik, so he makes a device that makes things shrink. Snively makes an appearance here (his first was in the Christmas Carol story, but his name was Snarley there). Robotnik has a monitor that can track the FF outside the Great Forest, so he has to know Knothole is somewhere in there right? Of course, every plan he makes to destroy the Great Forest fails miserably, so yeah. Anyway, the FF head to the abandoned concert hall to play as a band. Bunnie wants to play cymbals and saxophone, because she's the sax-cymbal of the team. Heh, nice.

They get ambushed and shrunk by Robotnik, who now has a roboticizer vacuum. Sonic clogs it up by cutting open a box fill with music programs, giving them a chance to hide. Robotnik crashes into a stage which wrecks the vacuum, but he still sucks Sonic up in a dust buster. The others FF save him by using a violin as a bow and arrow, and the effects finally wear off and they're big again. The shrinking device's effects last only an hour, which means these last few pages took an hour, and Robotnik still failed. They drive Robotnik away by playing music, and then shrink the invading army of badniks to save the day. End.

Much better issue. Both stories were good in their own way, and for the first time Robotnik had a significant advantage that required all the FF to help each other out to defeat him. You can argue that using music was a cheap way to end the fight, but Robotnik has always canonically hated music throughout all Sonic media, so it works here. One of the best issues so far.

I'll end tonight here while it's on a good note.
