What is League of Legends?
League of Legends is a team game very similar to the WarCraft 3 custom map DotA. There are two bases, one on either side of the map and several "lanes" between the bases along which AI controlled units spawn. An overhead view of the 5v5 map looks about like this:


There is a base in the bottom left, and a base in the top right. 3 lanes connect the two bases and every 30 seconds AI controlled "minions" spawn in each lane. Everyone who is in the game controls 1 "champion" unit and your job as a team is to push your lanes and destroy the opposing base. The lanes are protected by turrets and so you need your own minions along side you to be able to kill the turrets without getting targeted by them. 2 bases, 3 lanes, 5 players per team. There is also The Crystal Scar, the map currently used for the Dominion game mode. The Dominion overhead view looks like this:

On your sidebar, there's a chat rooms option. You can choose to join a custom chat room. Just type in "board 8" and it will put you in there. Then in your options menu, which looks like a gear, you can set the option to auto-join.

What are Champions?
Champions are the powerful units that you get to control. You pick 1 before the map loads and that is the champion you will use for that match. Champions start each match at level 1 their max level is 18. The important thing to consider is the stats of the champion you select will be affected by the level of your account.

What do 'account-levels' have to do with anything?
When you create an account you have a level 1 account. That is called your 'Summoner Level'. You are the summoner, and the champion you select for the match is the 'summoned'. You increase your summoner level by playing matches. Every match you play will earn you XP and IP. Earning enough XP will increase your summoner level with the max level being 30. Wins are worth more XP/IP than losses, so try to win. Your summoner level also determines:
(1) How many runes you can slot and
(2) How many mastery points you can allot

If you are low leveled still and playing by yourself then the game will try and pair you against similarly leveled opponents, but if you are playing with higher leveled friends then it will seek higher leveled opponents. Just something to consider when you start learning how to play.

What is IP again?
IP is the other kind of points you earn when you play matches. You earn both XP and IP and IP are the points that you use to purchase runes and champions. Yes, that’s right, you have to "buy" the champions, but you get the points for free so its not a bad deal. (You can also spend real money on champion packs if you would rather not take the time to earn them) The point is that you get the IP for free so you should figure out which champions you are good with and spend it on those. When you buy a champion you will have it unlocked on your account forever. And if you don't buy ANY champions, you will still have access to 10 of them. Every week there are 10 "free" champions. But they are only free for the week and 10 different champions will be free the next week. And so if you are level 1 you still have 10 champions available to you and so try them out, figure out which one you might like to spend points on and then buy it.

And so IP is good for Champions and Runes. You can also spend *real money* to unlock champions but you can NOT unlock runes with real money, only IP and so runes have to be earned.

I had two awesome games yesterday as Darius.
First was a 4v5 with a Panth who went AFK after giving the Jax in top lane a kill. I ended 6/5/5 with three of my deaths coming near the end where I did what damage I killed while their entire team of 5 attacked me and MF just ripped them to pieces. Was fun as hell and %$#^ing hilarious cause we where never actually losing once we past them on the death Panth gave before he died. Skarner was their jungler and he had one gank that got a kill on me but then I killed him that gank and our Karth in mid used his ult till kill the Jax after I died. Skarner tried another gank where I killed both him and Jax and then still had enough HP to stay in lane. That was nice.

Second was 5v5 but I went 19/7/14. Also was fun as hell.

I can't even pick a favorite line, though I think it might be the line about puking contests. "They'd compete for distance and volume" and then the bit about eating different colored food for variety. Something about the spontaneity of that part is amazing. Well that's the funniest line. The best "moment" is probably when Wes takes the challenge in Wedge's place.

I want to read the series again but my "Iron Fist" and "Solo Command" books are all screwed up and need to be replaced.

Why didn't M5 just suicide w/ Karth while they were sieging? At that point aren't CLG's options pretty much "die standing in a fed defile" or to lose the turret? With all the objectives taken on the field, there's not exactly much to lose if they just took down the turret and left.

Europeans don't really run suicide Karthus nor do they see it as a strategy from what I've seen. They treat Karthus' passive like Anivia's; it's a second chance in case they make a mistake, not an excuse to go super aggro.

Also pro players dont sit in Karthus ult when he goes in suicide. They exhuast him and kill him and then move back and fight 4on5.

CLGEU and M5 are both great teams, but my cheering will always go out to CLGEU. I love 'em, each player is awesome.

Speaking of strong teams right now, TSM has been doing really well lately. Even without their Karthus/Nocturne/Kayle combo they can run generic comps and still come out on top.

TSM has 2 comps right now

Karthus/Nocturne/Kayle ruin top lane for ANYONE. If Kayle can't beat you one on one(which is rare), at level 6 Kayle will shove to turret until she can whittle you down to 3/4 HP with E and minion damage and then Nocturne dives, Kayle ults, Karthus ults. Top Lane is now done. In team fights Nocturne blanks the screen, Karthus suicide dives, Kayle ults whichever one you focus, your carry is now dead.

if you ban out that combo they go Dyrus Vlad Top, Regi Kennen Mid, Maokai Jungle AOE Comp. If you counterpick Vlad top Dyrus goes Kennen top and Regi goes Vlad mid.

Very basic strategy that they execute to perfection.

Half of /v/ considers TSM heels mostly because of Dyrus. They say that he needs to be babysat by OddOne constantly and that he can only play two champions well. And of course, the whole Reddit thing.

The problem is the same as the problem people were having with the Protect to Kog comp that Dignitas ran a few tournaments back: complete underestimation of the pick-ban phase's importance on the game. You can't ban them out completely, but you can make sure pieces are missing. And as much as TSM bans their counter picks, there's still a lot of stuff people just aren't using. Tristana, taking Maokai away from OddOne, Gragas, CC sponges like Irelia. People complain about press R to win, but I'm not seeing anyone doing anything but picking the same crap they always have because they themselves have shallow champion pools or they just think playing what they're better as is better than playing what's best on paper.

I don't know, I guess it just frustrates me to see people allowing TSM to keep doing this.

Queue dodgers can make a "oh I have two hours, I should be able to fit two or three games of league in" into a "well just finished the first game and I have to be somewhere in 20 minutes" because it just takes so long to get into a game.

I generally agree with the assessment that Karthus' passive shouldn't be used to suicide willy nilly (it's pretty bad unless you can force a fight, ie. Jarvan ult), but in siege positions you should be suiciding to create short positional advantages if there's no major objectives out on the map. Doubly so if you have no way to force a fight.

Maybe it's just because I've had a lot of dominion experience, which contains constant situations with a defender's advantage, but if Karth is ever forced to lane swap out of bot, he basically has to suicide on points to ever contribute to a point attack unless your team has another good way to initiate (and even then, he generally converges to trying to die on point anyways).

Actually, it's even more generic than THAT. In Starcraft 2, there's a well known saying: "when you are ahead, get more ahead." In short, if you have an advantage, you should not take a risk to attempt to end the game immediately and instead leverage your advantage to turn it into an overwhelming one.

However, in LoL (well, in SC as well, it's just a lot harder to measure), there's an eventual limit to being ahead. If you have baron and the buffs, and you've filled all your item slots, that's it. That's as far ahead as you can get. So any progress on your opponent's side (and due to how it works, LoL has constant progress) at that point makes you less ahead. So you must take action before that point. You can't do what M5 did and try to leverage your advantage for half an hour.

M5 must have realised their only way get a tactical advantage was to poke them down with Corki (which wasn't working because they had too much heal and creep clearing) or to leverage the fact that CLG can't go where defile is, so the late game will heavily favour CLG if they're on the defence unless Karth suicides.

They didnt dive the turret because Anivia kept their minions away from it. Like 5 feet away from it lol. Pushing down Anivia is nearly impossible.

Pushing down Froggen's is stupid and makes you lose games.

Karthus definitely should've been used to suicide-initiate in that situation. It was probably the most realiable way they had to deal with Anivia.

But really, anything would have been better than what ended up doing. They let the enemy team get stronger and ended up diving them under the turret anyway.

Thornmail is good on Malphite against Triple AD where you're stacking armor

for everyone else it's MEH

I had a game where I was Malphite and everyone on the other team dealed Physical damage. Thornmail+Frozen Heart+Sunfire Cape+Randuin's+Ninja Tabi+Zhonya's is what I built. My E did ridiculous amounts of damage to them.
