This would not happen for a while, at least not until they release a new version of Tekkit for 1.2.5 (currently in testing!).
Tekkit is essentially a multiplayer Technic Pack, which is a mod pack that has lots of stuff, especially machines. You can set up factories, have quarries, more advanced rails, and lots of other stuff. For those that know of these mods, it includes Buildcraft, IndustrialCraft 2, RedPower 2, and Railcraft. It includes Equivalent Exchange, but I will turn it off as lots of servers found balance problems with it.
Because it is not vanilla and requires a different (third party) launcher, I figure that not as many people from this board might play. So, I am thinking of inviting PotD to the server. Will Board 8 and PotD work with or against each other? It would be interesting to see what happens. I could also invite RI or CE, but that might be too many people.
The first server we had was a lot of fun, and the more recent one was good too, but I think a lot of people just got bored. That's why I think this might be more interesting.
been playing some singleplayer trying to get used to the whole 'here is a ton of awesome mods have fun' aspect of minecraft >_>
would be interested in doing multiplayer at some point, but i have like...zero experience with a lot of the stuff involved with the mods (been watching duncan do a tekkit series of videos which has been pretty nice though).

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
There are only two reasons why I am thinking of including PotD.
1. To get more people into the server, since that was the problem last time, which could be worsened by not using Minecraft vanilla 2. Because of the old rivalry. I would like to see how each Board 8 and PotD interact.
I would like more input on this, though!

Nope. It was a Board 8er who thought he was clever by putting something about PotD. I know this because of server logs, and I recognized the name of an alt they had. I also make backups continuously, so nothing was lost. That user was also banned from that server, and others I may run in the future.
do I have to install anything on my client?
Yes, you will need to use the Technic Launcher, which installs everything for you automatically.

It does, but do not be afraid if you do not see your worlds in vanilla when you select it from the launcher. You still have them in the official launcher. Just a small thing you should be aware of.
The reason behind that is the reason that I like the Technic Launcher - it won't touch whatever Minecraft installation you already have, and keeps everything in its own area.

No, you are not good enough! We must have more! MORE! (Stealth bump)
EDIT: The Technic team announced that development will be going even slower due to Diablo III. We'll see when Tekkit 3 comes out. Maybe I should try testing the server soon with Tekkit 2.1. Hmm...

Well, I think I'm just going to wait for this server to play. Mostly because I had a lovely house going with a bunch of stuff in it (including vast riches in diamond block form, then I accidentally turned it into an airship >_>
14 people, including one "maybe" and one who wants hole. Considering that this will be hosted on a home computer, and Tekkit will likely require far more resources than a regular server (that I capped at 6 or 8 players), I don't think involving PotD is necessary unless people become disinterested. Even then, I hope that people will invite their friends to the server.

Due to modders still updating stuff and Diablo III being a distraction to the Technic Team, Tekkit 3 for 1.2.5 is being delayed. The Technic Team never gives ETAs, but they said they will be going slow.
This gives us two options: Wait more for Tekkit 3, or just go with 2.1. 2.1 is on Minecraft 1.1, so by just going with 2.1, we will miss out on the better height limit, chat features, and jungle biomes in addition to other features (those are just the three biggest I see). If we go with 2.1, we will have the Forestry mod, but when we upgrade to 3, we won't have it anymore and I don't know what will happen then.
Thoughts?

From: Gwindor | #030 That would mean that we have to downgrade our clients, right?
That sounds non-optimal.
Yes, a downgrade would be necessary. However, the Technic Launcher makes it ridiculously easy. I switched to and from 1.1 and 1.2.5 several times earlier with no issues.
From: SovietOmega | #031 haven't used forestry and i would definitely want the height. i would vote waiting.
It is important to note that while we wouldn't have the height upgrade now, we would in the future. As soon as a converter comes out, I would convert and test the server.

I'd say that D3 is probably going to be a distraction for everyone for at least the next week, and I haven't played Minecraft at all since the last update so it'd be nice to see the new stuff added in vanilla as well as this Tekkit stuff. So, I vote waiting.
But, I'm one amongst many, so this is just my vote.
We'll wait. In the meantime, I have some possible rules for the server that I'm working on, and I am also going to work on configuring server-side mods that should be helpful. Anyway, here are the rules, give me suggestions on them:
General rules: 1. No griefing, no trolling, no flaming. Let's keep it fun. 2. Please use the landowner mod to set your property lines (details on how to do so later). This will protect your property, and is the best form of protection.
Mod-specific rules: 1. BUILDCRAFT: Keep quarries away from places where they could be disruptive. Examples: near people's houses, spawn, mines, etc. Put a layer of something (dirt, sandstone, etc.) and a sign to make it less dangerous afterwards. 2. INDUSTRIALCRAFT: Keep nuclear reactors in safe areas. Use reinforced stone, and keep it monitored or shut off with redstone. 3. Don't steal power, electricity, Blutricity, etc. 4. In general, don't abuse mods to make them destructive or annoying.

My one disappointment with this is that I've learned the Zeppelin mod doesn't work in multiplayer. I have this lovely airship in my server that can mine, gather oil (annoying though, buildcraft/Zeps don't work well together), and deliver electricity anywhere in the world. And it was awesome. Also, this shuts down my desire to make a racetrack :P

Yes, it would be all in Tekkit. You do not need to worry about installing mods yourself (and honestly, I wouldn't recommend it), as there is an installer/launcher that will do everything for you.
For those concerned about security, the launcher is open source so you can check the source code yourself. Nobody anywhere has mentioned any security problems from using the launcher, and as far as I know, nobody has found that it sends your login information anywhere except the official Minecraft server.

How should we run this server? Should it be a "do whatever you want as long as you follow the rules" or should there be some element of roleplay (such as using a mod that allows for nations and cities owned by players)? Should we have special projects (such as building public buildings that nobody really owns)? Should we have money and shops to create an economy?
Thoughts?

It has come to my attention that RedPower will have computers. Of course, we already have ComputerCraft.
Basically, what I am saying is that I need to hurry up and learn LUA (or whatever language these computers use) to program some cool stuff when we get things going. I'm going to have fun with that.

Personally I don't see why we shouldn't just go ahead and start a world with the 2.1 version, and upgrade when 3 is finished, unless upgrading would require resetting and losing all the work done in the world
