SCENARIO: You find out that some 20 years from now, you will be responsible for the destruction of the world. It does not matter how you found out... it could be time travel, predicting the future, whatever works for you. What does matter is that it is 100% set in stone.

Even if you believe that predicting the future with certainty is impossible due to free will or for whatever other reasons, let's pretend for the sake of this topic that it can happen.

Would you rather find out that you will destroy the world due to your own incompetence or because you had become evil?

Side note: If this were an Extha topic, Smuffin would be RKO'd right now.

Evil?

Incompetence means you did it by mistake and you're a total loser. You will greatly regret what you have done.

Evil means not only are you ambitious, but incredibly talented as you manage to succeed. You will laugh gloriously as the world crumbles.

ITT people are selfish, terrible human beings.

This is the death of billions of people and an entire planet's-worth of life. Do you really want that to be the result of your conscious actions?

And incompetence doesn't necessarily mean "stupid", but even if it did, that's still way more favorable than being responsible for mass-genocide.

Being remembered as the single greatest mass murderer in history is SOO much better, right?

Evil in theory and incompetence in practice.

Speaking of which, here's an interesting addon to this dilemma: if you could prevent the destruction of the world by committing suicide, would you do it? Before anybody asks, yes, you CAN live out those twenty years, but the closer you get to the Big Day, the more likely it is you'll get things done too late and the world will still end up destroyed. What would you do?

Put me down for the 'evil' camp. Everyone's going to die either way, I might as well get something out of it. Even better if it's Well Intentioned Extremist evil, like using the Devil Gundam to wipe out all human life so the planet can recover from our environmentally-destructive habits.

Evil is relative. Stupid is as stupid does. I'll take evil, because that means I'm doing it for some purpose, be it foul or fair. It means I'm getting something out of it, and probably something other than just seeing the world end. If it were an accidental world-ending scenario, then everyone would be screwed. If it were my deliberate, evil intentions, then odds are I'm living in a space station or Terraforming Mars or something, with my elite group of minions whom I've allowed to live.

Picking "evil" is actually the "good" choice here.

Live out as much of the 20 years as I felt safe doing; probably like 15, and then suicide.

Board 8 has something fierce against those less educated than they are. It's quite frightening.

I picked evil because incompetence implies failure. Every other post seems to be a jab against "stupid" people.

One of my favorite Outer Limits episodes is about a ship being sent to the homeworld of an alien species that is in a war with Earth, and they have Earth on the ropes. Humanity's last hope is to just trash their homeworld with one massive bomb. Only the ship comes under attack and barely survives, and the few remaining crew members all black out for a time. Two of the survivors are spies from the aliens who turn the ship around back to earth. The last human on-board defeats them, gets to the planet he believes is the enemy and releases the bomb just in time to find out that he actually released it on earth.

His efforts were so heroic, and yet...boom.

I would say the last episode of "Dinosaurs" is an excellent example of destroying the world through incompetence, and I don't think I'd want to deal with the guilt of maybe trying to do good and destroying the world instead. At least if I do it through evil, I probably won't feel bad about it.
