Heading to grad school this fall, so the record player will get some more use. I try to keep a wide collection, even stuff I don't care for that much.

Wigs has already suggested I need some Rush, which I currently have none of. What album should I go for first give the opportunity?

The Who – Tommy

I have a first pressing of that.

On topic, I don't really have anything to add, pretty much all of my recent vinyl purchases have been small indie bands.

If you're talking about Rush albums, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are standards.

Jeez dude, get some stuff made in the past 10 years. Best advice I have is go to a record store and find things you like. That's what I do.

Also, Paul's Boutique.

That's why I want suggestions.

Although, due to record players going out of style decades ago, I find it is a lot harder and more expensive to get albums from current bands. Thus why I look for the well regarded albums from older bands that lots of my bar patrons will enjoy at a low price.

Plus, I will pretty much listen to anything. I enjoy music a lot but I wouldn't say I am especially discerning. I do not have any bands that I feel particularly attached to from the last decade beyond a song or two each on my ipod that I really like.

There is no reason why you should have a Beach Boys album not named Pet Sounds as your only Beach Boys album

Dude, Amazon. I mean, for most of the albums you're looking for, you're gonna end up paying $10 anyways, and I got plenty of good albums for that price. FutureSex/LoveSound, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, For Emma, Forever Ago, all sorts of good stuff. Also, check out inSound.com. I've got a lot of indie stuff from there.

If you want a ****ing awesome album, get London Sessions from LCD Soundsystem. Pretty great bar music. Also from my collection that are worth it: Ziggy Stardust, Daft Punk's Discovery, Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I'm sure there are more I'm missing. I love vinyl.

Also, I wasn't ****ing around talking about Paul's Boutique, that's my favorite album, because it sounds fantastic, it's a generally great album, and it's a single LP, which means less time spent switching.
