Someone breaks into your home. You are suddenly presented with the firearm of your choice and $5000 by the elder gods.

You can give the $5000 to the person, knowing (through elder god knowledge) that if you give him the $5000 you've just received he will leave peacefully and never return to rob you again.
Or you can use your gun to shoot the person, knowing (again, through elder god knowledge) that he will die in one shot, that you will not be prosecuted, and that you will not need to clean your upholstery or dispose of the body. If you do this, the $5000 is yours to keep.

Assume the person intended to break into your house, will kill you before you can escape, hide, or call the police if you don't kill him, but otherwise has no hostile intent towards you.

Do you do it?

Then I'd probably give him the money, especially if the same gods have decreed that he is to suffer for one minute if I shoot him.

I'm nonviolent and I feel guilt pretty easily, which is admittedly surprising given the cultures I was born and raised into.

I think I've mistakenly turned this into a joke topic with all my talk of the elder gods... not really the intent, unfortunately, but I'm just that funny I guess. <_<

This was actually an interesting question for me, though! Me personally, I'd have more reservations doing this than the bat thing since you're actually killing someone who might not otherwise die-- you're just serving as the executioner in the other one.

I mean I'd take the money either way but just saying.

the dilemma here to me doesn't really have to do with the money; I'd feel like **** if he took my money and went down the street to a different house. the fact that he 'intended' my house makes him seem like a relatively serious criminal and he's at least willing to kill me, who he doesn't even know...

yeah, i'll kill him. the money's a nice little bonus i could use right now. i wouldn't pick the $5000 over 'curing him of criminalness,' though.

Yeah, no assurance, but $5000 goes a long way. If he's the type that's robbing to get by he might take it and try to fix his life with it.

Assume that this is a real person. The elder gods only gave you foresight to the coming situation and the tools to deal with it-- they did not force the man to rob you. They are benevolent gods and would never do this.

It wasn't the elder god, it was the any gun works clause.
If it's a standard firearm that guarantees that he will be incapacitated while he suffers for a minute then dies we reach your intended question.

But I'll take a gun that shoots bank accounts of the wealthy too.

All joking aside, a robber doesn't deserve death, and this scenario is actually giving me a way to make sure we both escape his robbery unharmed. In a normal robbery without the old gods, I might shoot him out of self defense - how am I supposed to know whether he's packing or whether he'll shoot at me if he discovers my presence? Here, I can let him get away. Sure, it sucks to give a petty criminal five grand, but I'd rather do that than kill a petty criminal who doesn't deserve it.

this is also a good point - all this elder god knowledge is de-humanizing enough that I can treat him as a scenario and not even feel that guilty about it.

But the thing is, the guy is willing and actively trying to kill you. If you give him the $5000, what's to stop him from breaking into your neighbor's house and trying to kill them? Hopefully the $5000 would get him through whatever crisis he was in that required him to rob people's houses. If not, well, killing him would definitely result in someone dying while the other way probably would not. The neighbor may not be home, or the neighbor might not resist, or the neighbor could overpower him, etc.

This mindset intrigues me.

You do realize in this one you're actually killing a person rather than merely serving as the executioner, right? You do realize that in the other one the criminal "earned" their death to a greater extent (if you're of the mindset that death can be earned) due to being a murderer rather than a petty criminal, right?

I think it's odd for someone to take this scenario as the more light one to bear, and easily at that.

Your position is completely logical. But I can much more easily imagine myself shooting someone to death than clubbing his skull with a baseball bat. It's dumb but that's how it is.
