I once saw it in an ad for a smart phone. The advert was based around cats and it showed the phone playing nyan cat when it mentioned youtube.

I think you're just hearing what you want to hear (or rather, what the comments are tricking you into hearing). For me, it sounded like it was actually still saying "nya" or "nyan" like the original video, and I had to strain to hear "lemon lime". Then I went back to the original video and I could hear it saying "lemon" and "lime" there too. My conclusion is that this song is nearly a verbal palindrome, and any sounds that you hear in one direction will also be audible in the opposite direction.

In terms of previous internet fads, it's the same deal as badger badger badger -- catchy, absurd, repeatable, instantly recognizable.

I mean, Nyan Cat is just the western version of the myomyomyomyom fad, which understandably did not catch on in America. It was too japanese, it needed some of that "badger badger" style to work.

Levas pola/leek spin was similar too... and more impressive, I would say, since despite being extremely japanese it also caught on pretty well in the west.
