Is there any significant difference between the backwards compatible versions released a few years back and the new ones outside of just the HD size and being slimmer?
the new ones are more energy efficient, create less heat, and also have a better blu ray drive. I wouldn't recommend getting a BC old one if it is used, the life on the blu ray drive is probably short at this point.

I'm "kind of a big deal". http://img.imgcake.com/cyclo/Cyclopngegpngre.png
The super early BC PS3s has hardware PS2 emulation while the later ones have software... basically it means that the later ones don't play 100% of games, only like 90%, so it's possible some obscure game might not play.

yeah this is what I meant
the same problem happens when you use the component cable for PS2... you can't play certain PS1 games like Mega Man Collection !!
