For example, is it gradual and intricate like Mad Men? Or is it alternatingly action-packed and tension-building like Breaking Bad? Or is it one of those shows like Lost where you constantly want to watch the next episode immediately?
I am trying to decide whether it is worth my time.

Not really sure how to describe it. It transitions (pretty well, imo) from character development to action. There have only been six episodes, so it won't take much time to catch up.

The comic, and to a lesser extent the tv show, is more comparable to breaking bad i'd say. There's a constant dread hanging over the characters, the situations are nerve-racking, and there's no "good way" to watch/read it: either you consume it all in one go and feel absolutely terrible, or take it in small doses but have it always looming in the back of your mind.
The show's quality is in no way comparable to breaking bad, but it's still an engaging piece of television. The comic is brilliant up to issue 48 and slows down considerably after.

Think of it like Lost only in that the first episode draws you in so well and gets you wanting more. From there, the two diverge. TWD wants you to care about the characters and their plight but it's written so poorly that they all come off as fairly one dimensional and uninteresting. Lost achieved the opposite obviously, and flourished for most of it's run. TWD shows a lot of promise, especially if they can bring it back to the source material more closely. Honestly, I'd hold off on watching it until the second season has aired because if it improves that's great but if it dives further then you'd just be setting yourself for disappointment.
But watch it if you want. The pilot is honestly one of the best pilots ever.
I've actually seen the pilot, but was turned off because the show seemed like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be.
I got the impression there was no understanding of whether it was about a zombie dystopia with various characters surviving inside of it, or whether it was about various characters in the setting of a zombie dystopia
