Now, I was gone for my birthday, so my family has kind of been giving me my gifts as these pass by. today, one of my aunts gave me my gifts.

Now, two christmas' ago, she gave me a $25 visa gift card. Troublesome to use, but I found a game on amazon for exactly $25, so I got rid of it quickly.

Today, I open the card she gave me, it feels unusually thick. Not one, not two, but -three- visa gift cards are inside, all valueing $15. Along with the receipt, in which case I see that it cost her a $4.95 activation fee.

Why? Why waste money like that. Why not just give me $50. Give me a gamestop gift card, or an amazon gift card or something like that(Seriously, I dont exactly shop from a wide variety of places). But three $15 cards? Do you know how hard it is to spend these? I dread seeing a cashiers face when I come in and say, "I want to pay with three $15 visa gift cards and then some cash on top of that".

Visa gift cards are seriously the worst things ever created.

The pain in the ass thing about them is that, unlike every other gift card, we need to know the exact amount on them.

It's not so bad if you haven't used them, though; it's when you have larger ones that you aren't sure of the amount available that trouble happen.

I was once given a Wal-mart Money Card, which is basically a prepaid Visa card. $3 fee each month, $3 activation fee, etc. I said screw it and bought myself an Amazon gift card with it, and applied it to my own account.

So for each card, you could do this:
1. Go here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/gc/order-email?ie=UTF8&ref_=gc_lp_4ways_email_top
2. Type $15
3. Put an e-mail address you own (not sure if you can put the one associated with your Amazon account, I always use a different one)
4. Add to order, check out using one of your gift cards

Then, when you are done with all that, just get the activation codes (or whatever) and apply them to your account. And now you have $45 in Amazon credit.

red's point is that instead of just giving hard cash, his family went through all this complicated gift card bull*** that is worse for everyone except Visa, so it's just a waste

Basically.

Visa got $5 for nothing.

I am limited and unable to spend these directly online.

I am appreciative of the $45, but it is not the best, smartest, or easiest way to give it to me.

I'd just offer them to someone for $35 cash. They make a profit, you get rid of the inconvenience and you're still up $35

From what I understand a lot of people use them for traveling so that you don't have to take your own credit card in case crap happens, but unless she knew you were going on vacation or something it's kinda pointless.

the worst part of gift cards in general is the fact that they slowly lose money on the card if you dont use them between activation and 6 months.

Not anymore. The period got increased, and it's now somewhere between one and two years for the minimum legal limit.

What are you doing that you can't spend $15 in 6 months, or in this case $45. That's not even a new video game.

Also, most places won't let you buy gift cards with other gift cards.

In California, gift cards cannot lose value at all. Sadly, those Visa cards might be considered debit cards, which can legally lose value.

Yeah, but prepaid Visa cards aren't really considered gift cards. I've bought Amazon gift cards twice using Visa gift cards. One of which was my Wal-mart MoneyCard, and the other was a regular Visa gift card.

heres a link explaining my beef with gift cards.

Also zachnorn, there are some things i respect about cali, but there are some things that are totally absurd there. Arent state taxes like ridiculously low in cali given the economic strength of the state?

Sadly, I don't know that much about state income taxes because I don't need to file taxes. However, I know sales taxes are very high. For a while, my state+county+city tax was 10.75%.

ya ive read a lot about cali sales taxes being kinda high. Too bad sales taxes are primarily paid by the middle class. I read that in cali you need a 2/3rd majority vote to raise state taxes, and that will like never happen. Its also a major reason why cali is in tons of debt right now.
