It always startles me to see how apathetic people are towards other people dying nowadays. Or how it always needs to be compared to some bigger disaster. I mean yeah, people die every day. Still doesn't make something like this any worse. Obviously you shouldn't care too much about random people dying, because that would make you gloomy doomy all day. I don't even know what I'm trying to say here so I'll just stop here.

If you want to drag yourself down to mourn for the deaths of every single person who dies every day you are going to be dead yourself before you know it. But you already kinda said that. I am not apathetic, and I probably think about death more than you could possibly imagine. Death haunts me so badly I feel the need to not only write a an epic novel length story about it, but also a book and several short stories about it. But you can't always let the gravity of a single death weigh you down. It is terrible for them and their families, but you can also be thankful that it was not worse.

Given what people were saying about the "overblown severity" of this storm, I didn't think we'd get any casualties. Pretty sad.

People regarding the threat from storms like this as overblown is often why we still get casualties. I'm not saying these people specifically died because of this, but I think it's likely.
