Used game sales, however, hurts gaming overall.

Game companies can block the sale of used games by selling non-transferable licenses to a game instead of selling the game itself. This trumps first-sale doctrine. Why do you believe they don't do this if the used game market hurts them so much?

According to Wikipedia, Gamestop was established in 1984 (as Babbages). Admittedly it doesn't say when they began selling used games, but I would assume it was at least in the SNES era as those are my personal earliest memories of purchasing used games from a Software Etc. If gaming has survived 4 generations of "being hurt" I think it's going to be just fine.

Used game sales don't hurt nearly as much as they'd like you to believe, since it's a 1:1 turnover. Only one person is going to have that one copy of a game at a time, and they have to choose to sell it for somebody else to get it. Companies may go "Oh used games hurt us so much oh boo hoo," but there's a reason they haven't taken any big steps in stopping it.

I remember buying used games from Funcoland in the early/mid 90s. Funcoland eventually got merged with Gamestop.

Also: "offers store credit and "buy two, get one free" coupon for used games as a make-good."

Getting a free game coupon out of it too.

They were allowing returns, the game's distributer was ok with it and it's all for something that 75% of people probably didn't realize existed anyway. Plus it's friggin Gamestop. Can people honestly believe this would be the straw the broke the camel's back? As far as used game stores go, baring buying online, they're practically a monopoly.

$50 damage control is a bit excessive, imo. They could have done absolutely nothing since not even the developer cared they did that.

And many smarter game companies have went and done things like a single voucher for gameplay stuff that is only in the original copy. Dumber game companies just cry about it.

Yet they had absolutely no problem going forward with DRM that consumers hate in order to "battle" piracy. They were willing to piss people off for one problem, but not another? Wonder why.

Remind me what that is. Is that like the EA thing where if you buy used, you have to pay $10 anyway to play online/such? Because if it is, no, I wouldn't really count that as a "big step" since it's 100% optional. It's not like they said "If you buy used, you can't play online, period." It's them urging you to buy new, but not trying to say you have to.

I'd call it a SMART step, but not a BIG step. EA's not saying "You better buy new or else." They're saying "Well, if you buy used, we'd still like some money."

I never understood why they think that used games is such a big deal anyway. A lot of industries have had to deal with used stuff (like cars and books) forever, and they were okay. Just make a game people don't want to trade in.
