I've hated them for years but read the Deus Ex topic for the most recent example of them being awful and anti-consumer.

And if you don't shop from there, you are actively hurting the video game industry since if Gamestop dies, there will be no major stores to help drive the industries sales.

That's kind of ridiculous, as there's plenty of retailers that sell games, and if Gamestop dies, another company could take over, hopefully one that's better.

Amazon typically isn't as good with older games as Gamestop. I've been buying quite a few last gen RPGs recently, and the used copies are normally lower priced on Gamestops website than Amazon. Like Fire Emblem 9 I got for 24 bucks including shipping and taxes using Gamestop coupons and my membership card, while it was like 28-30 bucks on Amazon. Skies of Arcadia I got for 19 bucks on Gamestop, while it was 35 on Amazon. And of course the amazing buy 2 PS2 games get 2 free deal I've been abusing.

That's kind of ridiculous, as there's plenty of retailers that sell games, and if Gamestop dies, another company could take over, hopefully one that's better.

Sure, someone will take over, but not with the clout of Gamestop, and it would hurt the American gaming industry for a while while it takes them some time to get to the level Gamestop was.

But really, it just comes down to the best price. I don't see why I should punish myself by having to pay more because Gamestop does some underhanded stuff. I will buy the game I want where ever I can find it cheapest, whether it be Gamestop, Amazon, non Gaming stores, etc.

they are, but they don't usually have a very large selection.

That said, I have no qualms with Gamestop dying out. There are enough other options out there.

Best Buy certainly has a selection as large as Gamestop's.

Not when it comes to used games, but those are irrelevant when discussing how it would affect industry sales figures.

The other major stores, maybe not, but you can still find every major title at those places.

Best Buy is excellent, for used games I usually hit up Play N Trade or a few other local stores. Can still get psx and SNES games at Play N Trade, better selection for used games than GameStop to begin with.

My Best Buy sucks. I remember going there with a $50 giftcard to by Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 and them not having it. Then I grabbed my Toys R Us $50 giftcard and they didn't have it either.

I do generally prefer Amazon, as I have free two day shipping and don't pay taxes, but sometimes its more viable to go to a Gamestop.

But they've got an exclusivity deal for Assassin's Creed: Revelations Animus Edition in the UK.

Didn't even exist here until recently, and now they're the only place I can get the AC Encylopaedia. And of course, it's stupidly overpriced because there's no competition.

One of the driving forces of Gamestop is also the fact a lot of kids/teens don't have jobs, so a lot of their money for new games come from trade ins. Gamestop is the only viable place to trade them in without dealing with all kinds of bank accounts, paypal, etc, so its easiest for teens to do it there.

**** EB games was much better than GameStop but people supported GS until they got too big and just bought EB out
