the problem is, she grew up in peru, so when she came to america she fell behind in school while she was learning english. so as a result, she's just starting her senior year in high school, but she's the same age or older as most incoming college freshmen. she's also really mature.
Most of our parents have higher differences between their ages than this, back then it wasn't a big deal, why would it be now?
My father was 26 when he started dating my mom, he had to wait 3-4 years before she turned 18 so he could finally start dating her (Hint, he's 8 years older). It's just 5 years in your case, it's nothing.

Doesn't seem dicey when I only think about the ages, but I'd feel pretty weird dating a high schooler. I'm a couple years older than you, but I woulda probably felt weird about it two years ago.

my uncle came back from vietnam when he was 21 and started dating a 14 year old
over 40 years later they're still together
but yeah i need to stress that the age difference isn't the problem, it's the fact that she's in high school
Going to prom with her implies that you'll be dating for 8 months, so I'd say either you'll figure out that you don't like her so much by then or you're 8 months in and can either go for it or talk her out of it.
well it's not like you're planning to marry her or something right now, so don't worry too much about the high school bit. though i hope she doesn't mind a couple jokes on that. still, worst case scenario you'll get some weird and interesting stories to tell out of it, and if she's cute and legal 'why not.'

well yeah i wasn't being totally serious when i said that
if it came to that i highly doubt i would go because a 20 something year old tried to come to prom when i went to high school and there was a huge stink about it
that would be way too embarrassing for me i think, especially since i would be in the NYPD academy at the time
i'm also not sure why i said i met her the other day, it was a few weeks ago

she's actually pretty smart which is really quite incredible since she learned english only a few years ago. she still speaks spanish at home

'why are you asking.' if things have seemed fine so far then go for it. i mean worst case she'll be the one saying no, not you. and she's probably not as crazy as knives (though if she starts, jump out a window to escape).

23 and 18... there'll be a gap there. There's a lot that happens in those four years in terms of maturity. If you're ok with the fact that, despite your protests, she WILL be less mature than you, then go for it. Just be aware that it's there, and if you stick around, she'll be changing quite a bit in the next several years.

starting in january i'll be busy all through her school day, but until then i figure i can just sleep until she gets out and then take her out when she gets home
then again all this is prohibitive on her saying yes, but that seems like a foregone conclusion at this point
I put a straight barrier between anyone who's still in high school and anyone in college/out of high school. Dating between the two is rarely a good idea, the difference going to college/being out of HS usually makes is just so huge.
