Dunno if any of you have heard this, but the same French site that broke the news about Wii U's tablet controller and the Vita name is saying that Nintendo plans to freakin' re-launch the 3DS with a de-emphasis on 3D and maybe even a new name. Supposedly, Nintendo is also rethinking their idea of making the system with only one analog stick (or nub or whatever); they are considering adding a second stick, either as part of a re-designed system or as some kind of cheap add-on. Dunno how the latter idea would work.
The same site is reporting that various third parties are having trouble with the Wii U controller - specifically, with the wireless interface. The controllers and dev kits aren't working properly, the devs say.
Now please remember, these are RUMORS and should be taken with a huge brick of salt, but holy crap if true. What a belly-up.

Odd. Aren't the devs supposedly thrilled with the dev kits?

There's always hope for better things in life. But you can't let anything, friend, lover, God himself, be your hope. You have to be your own hope.
I don't see anything farfetched about the 3DS redesign. It'll happen eventually, and it would be a good idea to add actual functionality to go along with a size increase/decrease and better battery life. There's no getting around the fact that the 3DS that launched won't be the best model in its lifetime!
It's farfetched to me because it would mean essentially abandoning the current installed user base.
Adding a 2nd analog nub (which most games moving forward would be likely to utilize) completely locks out current 3DS owners from playing future games.
Not to mention re-naming the thing at this point would only create MORE confusion, not less. They need better marketing, not a complete re-branding.

From: ZFS | #010 it would be a good idea to add actual functionality to go along with a size increase/decrease and better battery life.
It would be a terrible idea because then it would be an actual new system and given the difficulty they've had launching a new platform so far, I doubt they're in a hurry to launch ANOTHER ONE.
Not really. It's not another platform, it's a revision and improvement of the current platform. Old ones get phased out, new ones become the standard. The issue is that you potentially create a problem for current owners, but the idea of going 5-6 years with one stick on a primarily 3D platform is pretty crappy. Nintendo really should have given the 3DS another year to cook.

It would essentially be pulling the plug on the 3DS, which I wouldn't be shocked by. The 3DS ends up being a gimmicky extension of the DS line, which is pretty much what the market is for it anyway. I don't know how else you can really market the thing.

You don't "potentially" create a problem for current owners. You ABSOLUTELY create a problem for current owners, and you create (further) marketplace confusion.

Well presumably under that idea they would redesign the system, and just sell the add-ons to current owners so that their systems don't suddenly become obsolete moving forward.

first is waaay too out there to be true. now i'm sure there's a redesign in the works somewhere, but lowering the 3D emphasis despite that being a heavy part of their marketing, and adding another analog to the system are way too major to be hardware changes for the revision.
the second one makes some sense as fact is the system is basically streaming the game over consistently, which is a tall order to give it. a data transfer issue could very well come up. a wired version might help on that regards for dev kits though.

PartOfYourWorld posted... From: Ayuyu | #011 Yeah, the Devs are apparently amazed by the U, so that second rumor seems a bit off. Nintendo rolled out video and quotes with devs saying great things about 3DS at the 2010 E3.
...But most devs are still on board for the 3DS. What, did you expect a bunch of completed games after only a year on a brand new handheld?

...can't say i've really heard many dev issues with the 3DS. instead i've only heard compliments to the hardware from a bunch of 'em saying they can do stuff they've wanted to do for a while now on it because it has shaders the Wii doesn't, allowing for more to be done overall.

launched it too early and launched it at too high a price are the two main flaws there, though they didn't really launch it too early as it's got some quality games on it already. they assumed people would be done quicker - hell they assumed THEY would be done quicker with some of these games (f'ing kid icarus is WHEN goddammit). that said, holiday season is their turf, in games, price, and even a shiny new color. that's why i really can't see any of the redesign rumors THAT big take effect. now i'm sure they're considering it, but this soon? an attachment to add stuff can work, but that'd have to come first. and if it's gonna be something like an analog stick, it'd end up having to be like the Wiimote Plus - packaged into games that use it. from there a remodeling with an analog can work, which could make sense if it's next year's Christmas. but until then, not happenin'. and i'm not sure what design they'll use for it either. there's some space under ABXY that can fit, but the only port available is the recharge port.
September should be interesting at least on that rumor.

It's possible that $250 may have been too much even with a good games library. That's more than people expect to see for a handheld. IIRC, PSP struggled with that price as well.
