Proper voting procedure and common sense both dictate CT is #1. You have to go against both not to do so at this point.

Don't be silly and act like the "proper" thing to do is vote a 2-loss game (with one of those losses coming against CT) #1 because it beat FFVI by 2 votes.

You don't "dock" Mario 3 for beating FFVI. But you certainly don't reward it for beating it by two votes.

You're very incorrigible.

Blame A Link to the Past for not letting CT slip past SM64. Like I said, it's obvious now that Chrono Trigger is the strongest game, but I can't move it up any higher than where I had it last week because the games ahead of it did their jobs and ALttP is still one of CT's best wins thus far.

Hey Tsunami, do you not expect your number 2 game to beat your number 17 game? Isn't that the entire purpose of ordering the games? So that they predict future outcomes? Why should the #2 game go up to #1, for beating another game you've already decided it was stronger than, by 2 votes, when the number 2 game has already lost to the #1 game head-to-head (59.18%-40.82%).

When you answer those questions without contradictions, I'll consider your vote legitimate as opposed to bullish and provocative.

A loss to the game that lost to SSBM?

Well, I currrently have SSBM ahead of SM64 (though I notice most people don't). But if SM64 beats CT, obviously it would move ahead of SSBM. So, a loss to SSBM would be worse, if it were by the same margin, although that's somewhat offset by CT/SM64 being a direct matchup and more recent a match. SM64 also has wins over SMB3 and SMW, whereas CT has wins over SMB3 and LTTP, but CT's wins were by much larger margins. So I guess the losses side would be a push, but CT would still be ahead on the wins side.

So, I'll probably still vote CT #1 unless it loses by a substantial margin (say, 4 votes).

Up until now your votes have been justifiable, using torturous twists of logic, but this is now a clear contradiction. The sole criterion for these rankings is strength. Damnit, I was all ready to just ignore everything else that was said for the rest of this topic, but of course you would be able to get through to me. No, it's not blatant contradiction. From what I see, CT appears to be the strongest, but from what I can quantify...If it were just about that, then regardless of strength of schedule, my preseason #1 would stay #1 on my ballot until it lost. Now, for this particular contest that's a moot point because my preseason #1 lost rather badly in Week 1, but, well, college football season is starting, and that provides a much better example because I fully expect that my preseason #1 will end up sliding down my ballot long before they lose (unless, of course, they too end up losing in Week 1--that's always the danger you get when you're facing an SEC team in your season opener.) Actually, that's a bit of a departure from last year--last year, I had the conventional choice at #1 preseason (Alabama) but went into the season fully expecting that my Week 1 ballot would see Boise State, facing a quality opponent in their opener as they often do (pretty much a necessity when playing in a weak conference), rise from the #2 spot to #1. And this year I have them #1 on my preseason rankings. And presuming that they can beat Georgia, they'll probably stay there for at least a few weeks...but eventually, some team from the SEC or Big 12 or Pac-12 will pass them, because that's just what teams from the big conferences do.

Not necessarily. Usually, yes, that would be the expectation, but at times there are "upsets" (by ranking) that are easy to see coming from a mile away. Both of Mega Man 2's losses quickly come to mind--both times, MM2 was ranked, and both times, it lost to an unranked game, but neither loss was even remotely surprising.

I think you're plenty ridiculous as it is. And those are just the games you've overrated (though at least you're not the only one with Ocarina or Phoenix in your top 10, so that's not quite as ridiculous)

But it could be worse. You could've done something as stupid as leaving PW3 on your ballot after two losses and an OT win just in the past four weeks while leaving 13-1, RPI #6 FFIX off your ballot entirely!

I wasn't even comparing it to a midmajor. It isn't any different than the other example I mentioned from last year, where due to having the superior non-conference, it was Boise State doing the passing and Alabama getting passed!
