From: Justin_Crossing | #043 yeah because judging a game by the first few hours is totally legit
that's like playing ffx and only reaching the first blitzball tournament
Well... it is a media's responsibility to be engaging from the start or it will lose a lot of followers from the get go. People (especially the stereotypical American) can be prone to short attention spans, and if a game doesn't grab you from the get go, it's probably already started off on the wrong foot. I despised FFX due to it's terrible pacing. Finally forced myself to finish the game a few years ago simply because I wanted to make sure I never left a FF game unfinished. 10 and 8 are the only two FF games I've had to force myself to finish*.
*I literally had my wife lock all the rest of my games, and any new ones I bought, in her safe at work until I beat both of them.
That said, I didn't find anything wrong with the first 2 and half hours of UC2 myself.
It seems perfectly fine to me to judge uncharted 2 from the first couple of hours- all the gameplay mechanics are there, so if you didn't enjoy them then why would you enjoy them later?

Yeah you really don't need to play most games that long to get an idea, UC2 included. It's not like the story is the big sell of the game. You get a good idea of the gameplay and the characters in the first few hours. Unless you're saying Nathan Drake later betrays his father only to find out that his father was not actually his father but foreign arms dealer Enrique Iglacias Eduardo Muncio IV, returned from his watery grave in the past by method of time soul vortex loop.

MrSmartGuy posted... Yeah, UC2 has one of the most gripping intros in all of gaming, I think. It's weird to me that people "can't get into it".
First, 9/10.
Second, the train stuff is okay, but the tutorial "sneak through the museum" chapter is really boring, I think. Thankfully, that's really the only boring part of the game. I understand that it's there for people to get used to the controls, but I think it's just unnecessary. There's no reason people couldn't have gotten used to the controls in Borneo or something.

The context of how they're used.

What do you even do in the first 2 hours? The Museum and Borneo? Might make it to the the temple in the first two hours...In other words, the most boring parts of the game.
Well it's a good introduction to the mechanics of the game, and the stealth is kinda cool, but compared to the falling building, helicopter fight, train fight, it's just not the same. Borneo is cool too, but I think it has the worst of the firefights.
Don't get me wrong, they are both great parts of the game, I just think they pale in comparison in terms of fun and excitement to later parts in the game.
Well, the set pieces might increase someone's entertainment (though I'm not a big fan of the third person shooting at all even with helicopters shooting at me), but if someone hated the base mechanicsfrom borneo and the train , I'm not sure they'd make the player (in this case the "lopen") change his mind!

I didn't know Zelda games were supposed to be linked. (No pun intended.) -freshmakerrrr Currently playing: Tetris (NES), Crash Bandicoot 3
9/10. My only real complaints were that I found it far far too linear. Everything was chosen for you. Also, too much climbing. So much, that even Nathan comments on its repetitiveness.
