Spoilers for FF7 and all of its associated media, too

Okay, so why did Cloud need it explained to him what the Ancients were early in the game by Aeris, Hojo, and Elmyra if Sephiroth explained everything to him/Zack in that flashback to Nibelheim when he was sixteen? And how did Cloud know what Sephiroth said in the library in that flashback at all, if it was really Zack and Cloud (the random soldier) was just derping around in the mansion?

Also, I read an official statement saying that Sephiroth didn't use all of his power in AC. Why would he not? Wasn't his entire purpose for returning solely to get revenge on Cloud?

Cloud's "memory" goes in and out and probably isn't complete, and Zack probably told him all that stuff, which was part of his assimilation of his character.

Also, I read an official statement saying that Sephiroth didn't use all of his power in AC. Why would he not? Wasn't his entire purpose for returning solely to get revenge on Cloud?

It's true, but he wasn't satisfied with simply killing Cloud, which he had ample opportunity to do at more than one point. He wanted to destroy everything Cloud held dear, and THEN kill him.

Yeah, uh... I read a synopsis of Genesis Core, and I don't remember Zack telling Cloud that. Though I could have forgotten. I admit that makes sense, though.

It's true, but he wasn't satisfied with simply killing Cloud, which he had ample opportunity to do at more than one point. He wanted to destroy everything Cloud held dear, and THEN kill him.

So the canon explanation is that Sephiroth was just dicking around during the fight and let Cloud get the best of him by accident, even though FF7 ends with Cloud defeating Sephiroth one-on-one in that unlosable battle?

He underestimated Cloud, yes.

Sephiroth is aware that he's pretty much the best thing that ever was, and he can get overconfident.

Also, the Sephiroth at the end of FFVII isn't the real Sephiroth. It's the Sephiroth in Cloud's mind. Sephiroth died when you beat Safer Sephiroth. It basically symbolizes Cloud getting freedom from his control. It's an "out-of-body experience," as evidenced by the fact that Cloud's...spirit, or whatever, flies out of him before the fight.

I guess that makes sense, but it still seems weird that it comes down to "Sephiroth dicked around."

Well, while I have you here, what was with Shinra rebuilding Nibelheim and pretending nothing had ever happened? Did they really think that not a single person who had ever been to Nibelheim would notice that everyone was gone and replaced by weirdos? Wouldn't it have been easier to cover it up, like they did everything else? Also: Sephiroth leaves his sword in President Shinra's body early in the game, but he later has it and it's never explained how he got it back? Or did I miss something?

The Sephiroth you're chasing is an illusion -- an extension of Jenova. I'm pretty sure it could spawn another Masamune with a simple CTRL+V.

And yeah, you're right, there are. Like "Dream Drop Distance".

Sephiroth at full power is totally untouchable one-on-one, even for Cloud. The only way Cloud could win that fight is if Sephiroth held back.

That, I'm not really sure about. Nibelheim's a pretty small town though, so it probably didn't get many visitors to begin with (Actually, there's a journal you can read in Tifa's house which says they only get a few visitors per quarter), which makes you wonder why they bothered to do anything about it at all. It's hard to say. I suppose it was more to cover up the truth about what happened to Sephiroth more than anything else, but I dunno.

Also: Sephiroth leaves his sword in President Shinra's body early in the game, but he later has it and it's never explained how he got it back? Or did I miss something?

He came back and got it? I dunno.

Well, duh.

The moral of all RPGs is YOU GOT TO BELIEEEEEEEEEEEEVE

IN THE POWER OF LOVE

And teamwork

The villain is usually the most powerful character in any RPG. I'm trying to think of an RPG where this isn't the case.

Thanks. But I am in an FF7 trance, and have yet more questions.

Why did Tifa not correct Cloud's memories? She must have known something was up as soon as he started his story about Sephiorth in Nibelheim. And wouldn't she have noticed that Cloud looks exactly like Zack, whom, admittedly, she only knew for a few hours so it would be like Zack looking like Cloud, but still?

And come to think of it, why did Cloud have glowing mako eyes, which are mentioned every third sentence in this game, if he was never in SOLDIER? Why is he powerful and capable at all, actually? Is he just super badass?

First question: What in the world is she supposed to say to him? "Hey Cloud you big dummy you weren't there stop talking like you were how do you know all this stuff anyway?" She was every bit as confused as he was.

Second question: Although Cloud was never in SOLDIER, he was still injected with Jenova cells during that 5-year period when he was being experimented on in the Shinra Mansion basement (Trying to make him into a clone like all the other townspeople). Hojo considers him a failure because he doesn't have the same reaction to it everyone does. Becoming a member of SOLDIER means being injected with Jenova cells.

Tifa was worried for Cloud's mental state from the moment she found him next to the train in the Sector 7 Slums before the first mission. He was already getting the number of years since they'd seen eachother wrong (actually he was right but yeah, she didn't know that obviously) and a few times throughout the adventure she almost broached the subject with him only to turn wayward. Yeah, it's a weakness on her part. But that's how it goes.

Cloud was drenched in Mako like crazy after he and Zack were taken by Shinra. Before that he didn't have those eyes; he's remembering badly and only Zack did.

It would still have made more sense for Tifa to bring up her concerns about Cloud being crazy to the others, but in retrospect, I suppose "the others" were Mr. T, a dog, a teenager, a crazy astronaut, an angsty vampire wannabe, and a girl who just wanted to get his pants, so okay.

... Huh. I just realized that Cid is the most normal person in the party.
