My wife has had a Smartphone for a year and a half now and is about to upgrade. She really wants me to get rid of my regular cellphone and get a smartphone as well. She will be getting the Droid X2, and she wants to get me a Sony Ericsson because the Sales Rep said he could throw it in for free and our data plan would only go up 30 dollars a month.

I only use about 15 minutes of call time on my phone a month and about 2 or 3 texts a month. While I wouldn't "mind" having a smart phone, I just don't know if I would use it all that often. I'm a stay at home dad, I have access to the internet via my PC already. I generally only use my phone when I am out on errands and need to get a hold of someone, which isn't often. I do take my PSP with me when I go to appointments, like Doctor offices in the wait room, but those are somewhat rare.

What's your guy's opinions of the Ericsson though? Is it a good phone with nice features? Also, money isn't really an issue for us, my wife and I waste it all the time to be honest >_>... but 30 bucks a month for an addition on our dataplan might be a bit too much of a waste if I end up using it as often as a regular cell phone.

What do you guys think?

I guess the better question would be, does anyone here even have an opinion on the Sony Ericsson?

Haven't used a SE smart phone per se, but the other SE phones I've used have been top quality.

Well, doesn't sound great so far. The Sales Rep told me that it's the phone most people who like gaming get but are hesitant about getting smart phones.

By the few responses so far, it sounds like a trap phone lol.

Either get a good smart phone, or don't get a smart phone at all. Getting a low quality one like SE because it's free is just an invitation for them to take your $30 a month while you wish you had something better or a cheaper monthly bill.

Always demand excellence.

I know zilch about smart phones. That's why I came here for advice and opinions ^_^. The SE was at least pretty.

A standard data plan is about $30 a month, so it's not like you're getting a deal there. No one offers family data plans yet, though Verizon supposedly will as a next step in the data plan competition.

So then you pay an extra $30 a month, and if you want a gaming phone, you're paying for those games. Plus it's small yet thick and dim, if it's the Xperia.

Another thing you'll notice is the battery life. You're probably used to leaving your cell phone here and there, and charging it every couple of days. Not with a smart phone.

If you want a good smart phone, there are better. If you don't want to use one, $30 a month adds up, though it sounds like you've gotta money to blow.

go Droid or go home IMO

I second getting a droid

I am relatively new to smartphones too, though I did a fair amount of research on what was out there when I got mine. I had gotten a taste of droid phones before, and liked what I saw. While perhaps not as user friendly as an iphone, the amount of options was nice.

I would look up what phones are available for your carrier and look up some reviews for the newer ones/ones you like the best. The price you pay to get the phone is negligible. Free, $100, $200...basically 6 months tops of data plan cost.

Some of the more awesome things you can do with a smartphone: Never get lost on the road, find new interesting places to eat (and read reviews), scan barcodes, detect metal, compass, monitor heart rate, access google sky maps and find where constellations are relative to you, can act as a flashlight, and also some games if you get bored :p

Also take pictures and video.

And if you really really want to, make some calls >_>
