Create a third party Progressive Party, but then nominate Obama as their presidential candidate, and someone else as the Vice-Presidential candidate who can go out and stump for the progressive cause in the election.

A) It would not result in a third party splitting votes for president, since all of Obama's votes for both tickets would be combined (I think so at least. Bryan's votes in 1896 are never listed separately.) Hell, it might even increase Obama's numbers from people who normally vote third party.

B) It would allow the left a chance to get their voice out without having to rely on Obama, and gives them a potential bargaining chip policy wise. "We can deliver Obama the votes, if he promotes progressive policies."

C) People would be able to show their support for the left without worrying about vote splitting, giving them an opportunity to be heard, and giving them some solid numbers which could be built on with momentum. If the numbers are high enough, they might even get a spot at the Vice-Presidential debate.

Obama's not progressive, voting rules have changed since 1896 which means that this would either be not possible, or would split the votes without having them combine in the end, Obama wouldn't allow this...

I can keep going, but the point is, this wouldn't work.
