I played the demos but they are really slow paced and only really go through a tutorial stage. I like magic but most of my group of friends that plays doesn't live near me anymore and it's one of those communities that I tend not to like the people in.

I've heard the deck modification mechanics are weird, but don't know the specifics

I played it (on PS3) when PSN+ was free for a while. The interface is fun, it works well, and the online is decent (if not a lot of leavers).

However, at least the version I played was completely horrible and not suitable for anyone who likes to play MTG because they destroy their target audience by not allowing you to remove cards from the starter decks they make you use, although you can add and remove cards you win, but the core 60 cards of the starter MUST remain.

Depends what you're looking for.

There's very little deck customization. Each deck starts with 60 cards and you unlock a few each time you win with that deck. It leaves you with about 75 cards to build a 60 card deck out of. Each deck is independent from each other -- you can't use cards from the mono-blue deck in the green/blue deck (unless WotC themselves decided to put the card in both decks).

It's basically a gateway into playing real Magic. You get to try a handful of deck archetypes and see if you like the gameplay for $10-15, and if you do and want to play, you end up buying real cards.

Yeah the little I could do on the trial kind of suggested that to me. Like you're not allowed to drop a deck below 60 cards, even if you intend to add more, so you pretty much have to add new cards then take out the old cards, which seems inconvenient, but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

Wigs: They changed that in the 2012 game at least. Guess they listened! You still can't pick what lands get tapped or get priority at the end of your opponent's phases (which is silly since the starter deck has Gideon's Lawkeeper of all things), but it works for beginners.

Oh, yeah that does sound pretty lame, though I guess the idea of it being a gateway into real magic makes sense. Basically being stuck with a preconstructed deck would probably annoy me though, so I probably won't get it unless you guys haven't played the 2012 version and it happens to fix this issue.

I have only played the 2012 version, so everything I say applies to it.

I still wish they'd make another game like Shandalar.

Although I think Magic is the best TCG around (lol look at the competition) I'd settle for an updated Pokemon TCG video game. Mechanics were perfect.

What I like about the games is the preconstructed decks; it has a fighting game feel to it. How well can you do with what you're given? I've love to get into real Magic though. Maybe later this year.
