Rocko's Modern Life = Invader Zim > Ren & Stimpy > Ahhh Real Monsters > Rugrats > Doug > Angry Beavers > Hey Arnold

I'm only slightly familiar with Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents, but know they're both quality. Fairly sure anything else is garbage.

I just rewatched the entire series last month via streaming Netflix. It would have been ranked lower than Zim, but it was even better than I remembered so now they're tied... even though they're totally different types of humor.

I rewatched maybe 3 episodes and thought it ruined my childhood. Does it get better beyond that?

Yes, definitely. Well, it depends. Which episodes were they? May I suggest watching the episode "I See London, I See France". It has one of my all time favorite bits ever.

Rocko's definitely the best show as an adult - it's legitimately funnier than most sitcoms airing today! Aside from that... I'd imagine early SpongeBob, Doug and Hey Arnold still have some entertainment value, but I'm not sure if I'd revisit anything else. The Klasky-Csupo stuff is definitely more kid-oriented than family-oriented (except maybe The Wild Thornberrys), I never really liked Ren & Stimpy or Zim, and truthfully, I remember The Angry Beavers not holding up very well when I tried to rewatch it.

In general, I think Cartoon Cartoons held up better. Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab and Sheep in the Big City seem even funnier to me nowadays! I think CN's shows tried harder to appeal to all ages, whereas I think many of Nick's shows were kid-only ordeals.

I haven't seen Johnny Bravo in a very long time, but I know Dexter's Lab definitely holds up. Out of curiosity, I watched the first 5 mins of a Cow and Chicken episode "On Demand" last week and couldn't handle it. It's much worse than I remember, and at it's best it was a Ren & Stimpy wannabe. Imitation Ren & Stimpy is just a bad idea.

Watch Johnny Bravo ASAP! It's so much better now than when you were a kid, trust me.

But yeah, Cow and Chicken is awful. The last time I watched it was, like, seven years ago - I caught an episode on Boomerang, and stuck around just for kicks. I couldn't believe I watched that crap as a kid. :\

On the whole, I still think I'd pick classic Nicktoons over those CN shows, though.

It's kinda sad how the original 3 Nicktoons were revived in one way or another and were horrible.

The Rugrats' revival was by far the most successful, but I just don't really think they needed new babies (Dil and that French chick). As decent as the actual new Rugrats episodes probably were, it doesn't make up for All Growed Up.

Disney's Doug was a disaster and Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon was a disgrace.

I don't think Disney's Doug was a disaster, necessarily, but it did feel strangely... empty compared to the original stuff.

I never watched that Adult Party Cartoon, but I hear it's unbelievably bad, and the idea just sucks to begin with. It seems to me that a lot of the fun of Ren & Stimpy comes from the fact that it really pushed the "family-friendly" envelope as far as it could go; by making it an actual adults-only program, I think the creators really missed the point.

John K. himself said he didn't really want to push the limits, but Spike TV ("the first network for men" lol) wanted the show to compete with South Park for pure raunchiness. The thing is, South Park isn't just raunchy for the sake of raunchy. It's actually pretty smart. Anyway, John K. was pressured into it by the network.

According to the always-right Wikipedia, he's since expressed interested in bringing the show back again but this time "just for the kids" once more, as it was original intended. Supposedly, Viacom still owns the rights and are getting in the way.

This is a great topic. Using just the cartoons mentioned in the original post my rankings would be:

Rocko's Modern Life > Hey Arnold > Ren & Stimpy > Doug > Rugrats > Ahhh Real Monsters > Angry Beavers > Invader Zim

The only one of those I don't actively like is Invader Zim. I just never really thought it was funny or got behind it. But the rest are classic.

Huh! I had no idea. All this time, I thought it was Spumco's idea to make it over-the-top raunchy.

Even though I never particularly cared for the show, I hope John's able to bring it back again. Between that and the Beavis and Butt-head revival, there would be a ton of happy 90s kids!

I'd bring Doug and Angry Beavers up two, but otherwise this ranking is solid. (I never watched Hey Arnold, though)

And for Cartoon Network shows, Courage the Cowardly Dog seems to have held up the best to time, but it's always been my favorite so I could just be a little biased. Samurai Jack, Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Laboratory also have held up impressively. I honestly never watched Powerpuff Girls back then, but my love for MLP: FiM spurred me to finally give it a shot and I regret nothing. It seems pretty solid, too.

As entertaining as Doug and Hey Arnold can be, they just never appealed to me the same way. I guess I have something against Nicktoons about ordinary people. I prefer the more bizarre, outrageous, or more obviously fictional (talking animals, etc).
