I haven't tried those two particular alcohols, though I do enjoy Dalmore's other whiskys. Haven't tried Macallan before. Personally, I think you could do far worse than those two bottles, and either one would be a great special occasion drink.
There is another user who is more familiar with the single malts than I am, I don't remember who though. In general, the longer a whisky has been aged, the smoother it be. My brothers rule of thumb is "if it ain't 18, it ain't legal." Meaning if he had his preference, he would only drink 18 year old whiskys, not that he really has a choice in what he can afford to drink.
There's a bottle of Macallan 25 year as well, but I think the 18 year is better and 1/3 the cost. 18 years, perfect blend of fiery and smooth for a scotch

"would a sausage by any other name smell as sweet?"
The 18 year is fine for this situation. The 25 year malt's bump in quality isn't worth the extra money. It's not even crazy for people to straight prefer the 18 to the 25.
Also Glenfiddich has a 21 year in that same price range that's pretty stellar. Super smooth, and light, the kind of scotch you can give to a non scotch drinker and they'll enjoy it.

Yeah it's good but not really cost prohibitive. I'm basically thinking... should I get the best quality $200 bottle or something a little different that I wouldn't normally want to drink. It's somewhat arbitrary but the universe is cold and random so I don't care
