My wife (who just so happens to be an artist) asked me if I wanted to go to the San Francisco Museum of Modern art this weekend, and I politely declined. She said she's disappointed that I don't want to go, but I just told her that I would honestly hate it. Every time I've ever been to a museum that didn't have hands on displays or wasn't of planes or cars, I usually just look at the stuff and think to myself "Yep, that's some paint on a canvas."
I've never understood the appeal of looking at famous art. It just does absolutely nothing for me. People are always saying "Oh, you can see the hardships of life and what the artist was trying to say with this color." and I just don't see it.
I feel so uncultured.
Anyway, she rickroll'd me as punishment, so I feel like I really dodged a bullet here.

See I don't have an appreciation in terms of researching who painted what and the actual themes behind it but I would love to go to a Museum just to look at stuff and try to figure out what a painter was thinking when they were doing something. I like seeing what their mood/theme was and either be told I am right or hilariously wrong, but either way I wouldn't pass on a trip to a Museum.

Yeah see, this is my problem. I really want to look at painting and try to figure it out, but I just can't. My brain just immediately tells me "Hey dude, you're bored now."

They don't have classic art in a museum of modern art. Don't know what's so hard to understand. You would be right to skip a trip there because it's just all nonsense.

Picasso, and Cezanne and Matisse, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec are having exhibits there.
I consider that pretty classic, not in the sense of being super old, but in the sense of them being classics.
I don't know a lot about art, obviously, but my question still stands.

Someone appreciating art could say the same about planes and cars and go "Yup, that's some formed metal."
Art is in the eye of the beholder. Some people see a lot in the classical stuffs which is why it is still around. Some turn to more modern things. Some lulz at paintings altogether and pursue creativity in other things be it sculpture, writing, engineering, programming, etc. The world is full of art, you just gotta look with an appreciative eye :p

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
I have the same problem with my gf. She drags me to art shows and then complains when I annoy her at them out of boredom. It's not like I don't give it an honest chance, it's just I can't stand there and stare at the same thing for long enough to "appreciate" it I guess.
