SNES/Virtual Console version is obviously great.

PS1 version has AWWWWWFUL load times every time you go to the menu, but the extras are cool (including anime cutscenes).

DS version has the PS1 cutscenes without the awful load times, and adds some extra stuff, but has the drawback (or benefit?) of being on a portable and not on a TV.

EDIT: The DS version also has a new translation (like FFVI on the GBA) that has been met with some disdain from long time fans but is supposedly more accurate.

The DS has a a couple new dungeons and an arena where you raise a monster and fight them, but only one of the dungeons is worth a damn. There's an Item Encyclopedia, Bestiary, Ending Encyclopedia, etc, if you have the completionist itch.

Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

emulator, you can fast forward through fights or just cheat and pretty much bypass the battle system altogether, which was pretty much always the worst thing about square's games.

If you don't like RPG battle systems, I'm not sure why you would bother playing them.

CT's battle system is the most fun of any turn-based RPGs I've played, too.

DS version's the most complete, so i'd put that one as the better one. however do note that Frog lost the half assed old english.

I would say that people may not necessarily play Square games FOR the battle systems, but they still like them.

DS version is the overall best, but the SNES version is just as good. Can't go wrong either one.
