Kazuma Kiryu has challenged Bartz to karaoke! The song they'll be competing in is MachineGun Kiss ( ), and will do so separately with a karaoke machine available displaying the lyrics and playing the instrumental for them. Who will perform it better?

Guidelines

- The fight will occur in real-time (like an FMV sequence). Gameplay mechanics are less important than how the characters would function in a real-time environment.

- The members of each team are ideal teammates capable of a pre-selected plan of battle.

- "Broken" refers to a lot of things, including insta-death, auto-effects, a variety of status effects (e.g., Imp, Silence, Stop, *not* Poison), and revival. Unless stated otherwise, nobody has them, though do use your own discretion.

- There may be SPOILERS from all of the games the characters are from.

Rules for Voting

- Bold your votes (using and ).

- Provide a justification for why you think the selected team would win. Fanboy logic, ignoring character assumptions or rules, and vague or unintelligible justifications are all grounds for having your vote disqualified.

- If you want to switch your votes simply bold the change; there's no need to delete your post, though you may if you wish.

- This match will end when one side reaches 7 votes, or in 6 hours, whichever comes first.

Kazuma Kiryu is as seen in the Yakuza series, fully leveled and improved with all HEAT actions available, as well as starting off with a full HEAT gauge from the start.

Bartz is as seen in Final Fantasy 5 Advance, as a Freelancer with only the jobs Bard and Dancer mastered, with access to all of their best nonbroken abilities and equipment.

Team Kiryu argument:

Well first off, Kiryu's done a loooot of karaoke over the ages. He's pretty much legendary in Japan for it, literally being ranked as the highest in any karaoke place he goes to. What's more, he's literally the vocalist for the song in the first place! It's pretty hard to imagine anyone able to take the same words and song and make it better.

And he's not only got the voice down, Kiryu's got intensity and stage presence too! Here's an example of him flaunting that with this same song:

...yeah after reading the top part, the song's basically one the Yakuza guy already knows and has aced it, while bartz doesn't know it. bard or not, for KARAOKE advantage goes to the person who's better familiar and has killed the song before.

doesn't help that Bartz totaly doesn't have a voice for rock. if it's backstreet boys he can do it. but not against a pro of the song. and karaoke machines didn't exist back then. so he can sing, doesn't mean he'd be good at this song. so yakuza guy.

Now come on, he's a bard, but that doesn't make him automatically the BEST bard. He doesn't even naturally know his songs, he needs to be taught them! Practice may get Bartz over the hump eventually, but to match a man like Kiryu's vocal talents in his own song and language on his first try?

And I mean, Kiryu is a paragon of amazing in every area like Bartz is too. While Bartz does it through jobs just to get good to a limited extent, Kiryu is above professional level in every sport he's ever tried and every fighting style he's ever tried. Talking dead on aim with darts, getting a perfect 300 in bowling, hitting a home run on the world's most outrageous pitch...

I watched the video. I still respect BARD Bartz far more than that, even if Kiryu has the advantage of being familiar with the song. Bartz lives and dies by those vocal chords. He'd pull it off. Barely maybe, but he'd do it.

he can live and die by 'em all he wants, if he can't sing the song well it doesn't matter. he's gotta have the voice for it (there is no way Bartz is a rocker voice), he's from the wrong time period, and bards don't even sing that genre of music in the first place. hell, rock didn't even exist then. there's familiar and there's "i perfect'd this song what can you do," and this is the latter. with the fact that he also sings the actual song too. >___>;

Bartz didn't quite live or die by his singing as a bard! It was only to support his allies, and said allies could do it just as good or better. Loads of bards worldwide taught him his songs and were just as good, and even Xezat of the Warriors of Dawn was a bard in his own right. Bartz was good, but Kiryu's better.

Bard/Dancer Bartz would take this thing, and it's a great compliment that he'd be able to do it over the proprietor of the song. Like 99% of mercs taking on the guy who made the song? Lose. Bard/Dancer Bartz is like the worst choice to face him.

Since I cannot look at any writeup or post about Kiryu since they may contain spoilers for Yakuza 3, I must go on my own knowledge of the characters. From what I know, Kiryu is an ex-Yakuza who is now runs an orphanage and as far as I know that's how his story ends. With that said, I must go with Bard Bartz since he has real musical experience/training.

except bards don't even sing this style of music, he's not fit for it physically, the other guy's a pro, and it's literally impossible by the way karaoke works for him to lose if he's got functional vocal cords. <_<;

if you think he'd do a better version of it as a cover, sure. but a karaoke machine doesn't care how much you cover the song and only how well you match it. in which case... the actual singer kinda has that in the bag.

From what I've seen in Yakuza 3 and the Yakuza 1 + 2 recaps, Kiryu never sings even a single line. I say being vocally trained, even in a different style, is better than nothing.

From what I know Kiryu isn't in Yakuza 4, and deals with a different protagonist. Simply saying he is in 4 is a spoiler.

Well, Kiryu is way more physically fit than Bartz.

Also, karaoke pretty much needs to be done drunk, otherwise it's just singing. Assuming both people have drunk enough to make this legit karaoke, Kiryu comes out ahead because he handles his drinks like a champ.

Bartz if I remember right couldn't even stand a sip of whiskey without coughing it up, it was Galuf who could chug it down and laugh it off.

you do realize freddy was actually 1, decently built when he wasn't with AIDS, and 2, could not sing as deep as the voice in the song, right? the guy was a fantastic vocalist, but most of his stuff is a tenor or higher. and that's what was so great about it. that's also why it's damn near impossible to do his songs if you've got balls.

From what I've seen Kiryu is a pretty sober guy, he never drinks unless it's around someone else for their sake. Like that one guy, or that other person.

Except Bartz never lived and died by vocal chords. He was able to be a bard, that's the extent of it.

The range shown for that is "He sounds either soothing, or like he's wailing" for his singing. That's not saying he's particularly good, especially for a song like this. And it doesn't say he was ever good as a bard to do anything to help him in the journey, because he'd have 3 allies with better jobs helping him in that case and just be a burden to them.

Dude's just a regular medieval musician. Kiryu's the modern karaoke badass and the best in his world at it, especially at a song he's already the vocalist for.

So I decided to read all the posts here. I have been spoiled for Yakuza 3, so much so that playing it now is totally useless since I would have only played it for the story. Be that as it may, Change My Vote to Kiryu. If we can do that, I guess I should have figured that out before destoying Yakuza's story for myself.
