It would be for the best, the console market is stupid and redundant. If you buy every console and a PC once a generation, you basically buying 4 computers. PC gaming taking over completely or console standardization needs to occur.

Pretty much everyone who is not MS/Nintendo/Sony wants a one-console future

And there are even rumors of MS/Sony working together on their next console

I do as well. So long as it is a standard, rather than a console. Kind of like Blu-Ray. Sony makes Blu-Ray drives and players, but so do a lot of companies. As long as it is a standard and competition can exist, I see no problem.

I think it was the 3DO that had 3 companies that made them. That is an excellent idea, and I would like to see it happen again.

Of course, one thing that PC gamers have been saying is that consoles are becoming PCs (XBox line especially). I would actually like to see a standard minimum (so there could be better hardware, it just has to be certain specs at minimum) PC configuration for game consoles. It's like with DivX Certified video. If you encode your video with DivX Certified settings, you can play it on anything that is also DivX Certified. I would like to see something like that with games.

That's always confused me btw in regard to PC gaming, why are PC's so much more backwards compatible than gaming consoles? I can still play games from 10-15 years ago on my PC, but I can't play a GameCube game on the Wii U which is much more powerful in every spec? What is it about game consoles that makes standard system requirements irrelevant?

Modern PCs all conform to a standard architecture, so even though they have completely different components they all work together in the same way.

Consoles can completely change their architecture between generations, so software made for one will be completely inoperable on another. Backwards compatibility on consoles generally requires dedicated emulation software and/or legacy hardware, which bumps up the manufacturing costs.

It's often technical limitations. The PS3, for example, needed to have some of the PS2's parts in it to do full backwards compatibility, which added cost. The reason is because the hardware's architecture is different. Emulation is also difficult to do, but I don't know how emulators work, other than that you need hardware several times more powerful than the original hardware to do it properly.

Also, PCs have had mostly the same core architecture since the 80s. Things have obviously changed a lot, but not as drastically as consoles.

That's basically what a PC is. There used to be dozens of different computers, all completely incompatible with each other, until IBM defined a standard that other manufacturers could use. That's why a lot of old PC games have "for IBM Compatibles" on the packaging.

Gaming has competition from other sources of entertainment. If they jack up the prices, people go find something else to occupy their time.

No, it's like a DVD player. Lots of people make DVD players. It's called competition. It's good for any industry.

And consoles not being upgradeable is a good thing. Because it means that every game that is released on that console is playable on that console. You don't have to check system specs or play in low quality or make sure all your drivers are up to date. The game developers tailor the game to the specs of the console rather than the individual tailoring their console to the specs of the game. That is a good thing for casual gamers and is therefore a good thing for the gaming industry.

And it's not like PCs are completely standardised. Nvidia or AMD?

I could see it working if it was like, say next generation of consoles has a certain standard. Sony and MS both make consoles that conform to that standard, but they have something in em that makes it possible to make a game only work for one manufacturer's version of the console, similar to region lockouts. So you still wouldn't be playing Halo on your Sony console, but for all the third-party games out there, it would be the same version of the game playable in either machine.

Hopefully they'd be willing to allow a single disc to be playable in both machines, so the consumer benefits from this and not just the developers. But at the very least you wouldn't have to worry about games like Bayonetta where one version is vastly inferior to the other.

Those companies do adhere to standards: DirectX and OpenGL. Hypothetically speaking, it should be transparent to developers. Practically speaking it isn't when you're on the bleeding edge because of bugs and poor specifications, etc. etc., but for most developers they're mainly concerned about whether a card adheres to a certain OpenGL or DirectX version.

Yes, and it wasn't so bad then because of a lack of the technology that we currently see today. What happens if the merge results in an Ubisoft DRM type thing where every game you purchase requires you to download it as you play?

Even taking out that extreme, you would see even further advancements in DLC. Having to pay to use some ridiculous online service that you might not even use, etc.

Valve's death grip on digital distribution/the PC market has been one of the best things to happen in gaming this generation.
Though I agree it'd be a bad idea to give that sort of power to Sony, Microsoft, or a whole host of other folks.

Well, it's an unrealistic idea, and I think people get that even if they want it. It's not something that's going to happen for a good long while, anyway. For as long as there are consoles as we know them, we'll still have at least two choices -- Nintendo's console or Sony/Microsoft's console.

nintendo will always be off in left field doing some crazy gimmick that most of us aren't interested in to begin with, since the DS come out this has been their schtick and it's made them successful beyond imagination. but sony and microsoft consolidating would be a major improvement to the current state of things, it really is redundant to own both a PS3 and a 360 and they're ultimately competing for the same demographic, it would be a good move for everyone.
