For the record, chapter 1 will probably happen tomorrow morning/afternoon/whatever time of day it is when I'm awake. It's my least favourite chapter in the game and I hate that I'm going to have to complain about something so early, might give the wrong impression about this game.

Oh, right. Speaking of complaining about things. You know all that *****ing I've done occasionally about things that are stupidly unintuitive and impossible to find without a guide? AKA

Mwahahaha waste all your time on that site

Anyway. FE4 is a major dick about such things and let it be known that despite my obvious love for the game and general bias in favour of it, I still think hiding valuable rewards like the Hero Axe and Pursuit Ring on random peninsulas is stupid as hell.

Yay, a game I actually feel compelled to comment on.

I'll also be posting youtube links for music purposes, because this game has a great soundtrack and listening to the music of the chapter I'm on should enhance the reading experience :)

Agreed so hard. Blows the soundtracks of the rest of the series out of the water IMO.

Nothing exciting happens until Azel and Lex join, where we get the amusing conversation where Lex refers to fighting in a war as "Finally a chance to kick some ass".

Is it just me or is Hector basically Lex v2.0? He even looks similar in some of the official art. >_>

People who haven't played the game, make your official guesses now as to what role this guy will play in the story!

I really wish I hadn't known so much about the game before I played it, because it killed some of the intrigue in scenes like this one. That said, Alvis still ended up being probably the most interesting character in any Nintendo game I've ever played, so it didn't turn out too badly.

Agreed. If I made a top ten list of songs from the series, I'd probably have four or five tracks from it. Maybe more. Probably more now that I realize I'd have chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and Final player phase all in contention, along with Alvis' theme and the Thracian army theme (the slower one that appears in one or two of Trabant's dialogue scenes and a bit in FE5, not the enemy phase one that is faster and goofier) and the Verdane army theme.

Is it just me or is Hector basically Lex v2.0? He even looks similar in some of the official art. >_>

Unfortunately he lacks the horse. But yeah, blue haired, blue armored axe wielding tank whose personality largely centers around "let's kick some ass"? Definite resemblance.

I had the entire plot spoiled for me ages in advance and I still loved it and rate the big plot twist as one of my all-time favourites. I've said half a dozen times in this topic Alvis is my favourite character in the series so obviously knowing about him in advance didn't ruin it for me.

Chapter 5: Mother and Child

Well, not going to comment on the plot here so as not to spoil it for anyone that may be reading this and hasn't played FE5 before (though I'm not sure anyone is). I do, however, get Nanna back, and Eyvel is with her, and they are in an... interesting situation to start. This is a fairly standard bit without much deviation in how you can do it, so I'm going to just say 'everything worked out' here, as the only real way to get screwed over is if Nanna's staff happens to miss healing Eyvel (god damn you FE5... I forget, did FE4 do this too? It wasn't anywhere near as bad if it did).

Meanwhile with Leaf's group, we engage the first group of enemies and a mage curiously decides to capture Lifis instead of doing anything useful, and I return the favor and capture him back, 'lol'. We continue north around the ring and run into a group of 6 mages just as I pass the point that triggers the next story event, causing life to get a whole lot harder for Eyvel. Unfortunately, Nanna's staff DOES miss now, leaving Eyvel with 4 HP and unable to survive another hit, so I have to rush Lifis over to unlock the door to them after killing just two of the mages. The door unlocks, I get Nanna, and I'm left with two promoted enemies with killer weapons to fight as well as 4 mages (FE5!!!!). I cobble everyone into the best defensive stance I can manage, and Lifis manages to dodge a 42% killing blow from a mage and everyone lives another turn. Whew.

The combined hits of Asvel and Fergus take down one of the promoted enemies while everyone cleans up the mages. Lifis gets an amazing no stat level up because I guess dodging that attack robbed him of all his good RNs for the level. I trade both the Baldo and Hezul scrolls to Machua and have her take out the remaining promoted enemy, and she gets a good level up as a result of that.

Next up? A group of archers and a meteor wielding bishop. I'm feeling pretty good at this point as the hardest part of the level is definitely over, but I can't let my guard down yet because crap can still happen. I mob the archers, take out Bandol with Fergus and Asvel, open the door to outside with Lifis, give Karin the chest keys, and send her after that chest outside.

Asvel tanks the meteor shots and everyone moves in and cleans up the soldiers. Not hard. Next, last, and most annoyingly is a small 2 square corridor that you effectively can't go on the left side of because there's a Dark Bishop with 26 attack power that can hit you there, and a sniper with a silver bow waiting on the other side with two mages. Luckily proper positioning makes it possible to kite the mages up away from the sniper, letting you kill them and safely put Dalshin in range of the sniper to draw him out. A few seconds later and he bites it. I then have Asvel chug my pure water and send him to draw out the dark bishop and the regular bishop, who he can now survive against comfortably. Machua brave swords the dark bishop down, gaining another awesome level up, and Asvel and Fergus kill the regular bishop.

I claim the two chests they were guarding and have everyone escape for the win.

Yet again FE5 continues to defy my expectations and not horribly slaughter me, though it DID come close with the Lifis incident. I'm surprised at how well I'm doing, actually, which is in some ways relieving and some ways disappointing because I know when I DO actually get my ass handed to me, it's going to be a much harsher blow because of it <.<

Sweet. I love FE4's music and have been having a lot of trouble finding links to individual songs on YouTube, so thanks for being my guide.

And no, Tcaz, FE4 didn't do that. That was strictly an FE5 thing.

...there are a lot of things that are strictly FE5 things. Capturing enemies, stamina meters, healing that can miss, movement stars, growth rates for movement and build...

However, there are also a lot of things that were strictly FE5 things when the game came out that are now staples of the series. Rescuing allied units, fog of war...uh...that's odd, I could've sworn there were more.

...well, I guess it was also the first game with a playable Dark Magic user...unless you count the "Black Magic" in FE2.

There's actually no danger of getting screwed over with Nanna and Eyvel at all unless *maybe* you can have Eyvel's weapon break and then get her captured by one of the stronger enemies, but I've never gotten to that point. Due to the plot needing her around, the RNG has to sulk in a corner whenever she's in danger, as she is guaranteed to dodge any attack that would have otherwise killed her in chapters 1-3 and 5 (naturally it's gone if you get her back in 24x). Plus she won't counterattack against Mareeta so you have to try to mess that one up. I was going to say that might have been the first case in FE of a character who actually WON'T attack a character related to them (since most people have Matthis syndrome), but then I remembered Rudolph in FE2.

Build growth was sort of brought back in 9, with strength defining AS loss instead. Though getting heavier and heavier so you can't get rescued sounds kind of crappy (I haven't played 5 to know how bad it actually is).

Chapter 1

Player phase music:

Not one of my favourites, but fortunately we still have the awesome Verdane army theme on enemy phase to keep us happy

Alright so this is the worst chapter in the game, for reasons I'll get to when I reach them. It. Reach it. It involves trees.

Before we get to the stupidity though, we have the introduction of the awesome FE4 arena. Unlike later arenas in the series, you don't pay money to rent a weapon and fight life or death battles against enemies who may or may not break the stat caps (say hello to those Warriors in FE6 arenas that have too much HP, or the various unpromoted enemies who manage to double people whose speed is above 16). Instead, you bring your own weapons in and fight battles that will leave you at 1HP if you lose, but you can try again if you want. There's 7 fixed opponents in each arena, each one providing you more EXP and gold on victory than the one before. With units having individual pools of money instead of it being shared amongst everyone, and money being necessary to buy the valuable skill/stat rings and weapons and keep good weapons repaired (weapons get repaired at castles instead of breaking in this game), arena prowess tends to be very important. I won't bore everyone with the full details of arena fights though, only if amusing things happen will I talk about them.

This is also our main introduction to conversations between characters that can provide items and stat boosts. The game even lists on characters status screen who they can talk to. Kind of cool. The big ones here are having Cuan provide Fin with some improved stats, Dew giving Aideen the Warp staff, Aideen giving Ethlin the Return staff (spamming these two staffs will be one of the main sources of EXP for these two ladies), and Midir chatting with Aideen to gain love points, since they'll be paired up eventually. Also we need to recruit Ayra and Jamka, both of whom can be slightly challenging to not kill/get killed by.

Oh, right. And get our units south to rescue Aideen, since that's kind of the entire plot for why we're in Verdane in the first place <_< Then we go capture the capital and will get our introduction to the dark mages of the Loputo/Lopt/Loptian/etc Sect/Church (damn translation ambiguity!).

The arena did not go too smoothly for most units. Sigurd was the only man to clear it. The only other person to make it to the 7th guy was...Ardan. What. At least everyone else can get shots at it later in the chapter once they've leveled up a bit more, maybe it will help. Some weapons get traded around too, Fin and Cuan swap Iron Lance for Steel Lance, Alec gets a Steel Sword and Iron Lance, Noish gets an Iron Lance, Sigurd buys a Javelin because why the hell not, etc.

Finally, it's battle time! Everyone travels south to intercept the first army of axe users, then we get the scene where Jamka helps Dew and Aideen escape. Those two will have some fun running away from everything. And by "fun" I mean "Dew will block a chokepoint and poke things with his pitiful strength". And by that, I mean Dew is a thief and in FE4, thieves steal money when they hit people and can give their cash to others. Always helpful.

So I set up Kinbois to be killed by Lex so he can get the Hand Axe. It's pretty terrible but it's still useful to have on someone who can use it. Sigurd charges ahead, Ayra ends up attacking Lex (not what I wanted, obviously) but it worked out, we seize the castle and she gets recruited in short order. Yay, on to the second part of the chapter, but first, our first mid-chapter intermission! These maps are big, yo.

Ah screw the intermission, too hard to get out of an FE4 mood once I get into it.

Chapter 1 continued

Next on our list of objectives is bailing out Dew from the rather large horde of enemies he can't exactly do much to. He's gained two points of strength from leveling already and he's still only doing 5 damage to them. Kind of sad. And apparently capturing a castle several miles away means Dew now has a Warp staff to give to Aideen. Funny how that works. Oh yeah, some dudes show up to go after our home castle. That would be a problem if it weren't for the fact that Eltshan and his buddies come along to completely wipe the floor with them.

It hardly feels fair fighting these guys once my full army arrives. The only bad thing is that no one has the specific strength necessary to knock an enemy into range for Dew to kill, but oh well, you can't have everything. Once that group is dealt with, I move on to the group defending the next castle. They also get royally owned, and Sigurd eventually gets the boss kill and everyone is happy. Then we get a scene where we meet Deirdre (another name that has been translated in various ways), who will eventually join up. And by eventually, I mean in about ten minutes. And by join up, I mean randomly fall in love with Sigurd. Then we get the scene where the king of Verdane is killed by his "advisor", the dark mage Sandima, who has been causing the entire war. Then comes his little chat with the leader of the Lopt Sect, Manfloy. Definitely will be seeing him around more in the future. He's talking about reviving a "dark lord", and when that happens in a video game, you KNOW it's going to be important.

Now we reach the part I hate. The forest. We have to fight some barbarians and recruit Jamka (and find someone who can take an attack from Jamka), all while in a giant forest that cuts mobility down to nothing. Then we keep moving through the forest, because apparently wasting time is fun. This is the main reason this chapter is the worst in the game. Stupid trees. Also, once we pass the forest, Lex will have to wander off to a strange, isolated peninsula for an event that gets him the Hero Axe (what would later be called Brave Axe). Hiding the weapon that takes Lex from tank to juggernaut like that is pretty dumb.

Recruiting Jamka ends up going quite well, everyone moves out of his range, Aideen has a clear path to speak to him, she just has to face one attack with terrible hit rates that can't even OHKO her anyway from a barbarian. Then he shows off why he's awesome when he can get in range by smiting a dude. Then we finish off the enemies, Sigurd moves forward and Deidre is recruited, then Aideen and Ethlin start warping/returning dudes who won't be contributing to the final stretch, especially the ones who need to get some arena time in.

Forest forest forest. It's slow going.

We get out of the forest, Lex goes to do his thing, Deirdre silences Sandima as usual, Sigurd gets ready to do some Javelin work, Midir and Cuan try to catch up to help out, the staff users follow along to try to be useful. Well, Ethlin goes with Lex so he can get sent home to do some Hero Axe arena fighting.

Dierdre abuses Prayer a bit to kick some archer ass, and throws another silence out just for lulz (and EXP). I set her up to kill Sandima so she can get his Magic Ring, and she ends up getting our first "relationship crit" (siblings and lovers can cause crits when next to each other, and she pulled off a needless one thanks to Sigurd here) of the game. Then some more Return/Warp stuff goes on to let her arena, and then Sigurd seizes and everyone is happy. Except all the people I killed and their families, of course.

Wait, Eyvel can't die there until Mareeta comes out? I never knew that. Interesting. Finding out lots of stuff I don't know about FE5 here.

Will prolly play chapter 6 and maybe 7 a bit later (since 6 is a joke unless you try to take on the entire pursuing army and frankly I'm not crazy enough to do that on a run where I'm not restarting).

Onwards!

Chapter 2: Disturbance in Agustria

Sadly can't find a youtube link to the music I want to share. You can look here:

http://www.serenesforest.net/music/music4ost.html

For the music of this game but its links are not very copy/paste friendly. Shame too, this chapter has good music.

Anyway, Eltshan took off so now his half-sister Lachesis is being attacked and the various lords of Agusty are being dicks so Sigurd and co. decide it's time to go save the princess and smash some dudes to death. And hey look, Manfloy is here, manipulating everything behind the scenes again. But first, the arena. Reaching level 7 of the arena is rather important, since it's Holyn. Beat him and he joins. And then his replacement at level 7 is stronger than him. Kind of amusing. Also amusing is that Deidre clears the arena, growing just the right HP/defense to have the 7th fighter drop her HP to exactly the right amount for Prayer to make her invincible.

Deidre grabs the Warp staff so she can gain some EXP before "spoilers" happens, Ethlin and Aideen swap Live for Relive (Aideen will heal enough with the lesser one, while Ethlin needs the boost to her healing abilities). The Slim Swords get distributed to Ayra (who uses the added evasion to advance a bit further in the arena than she could have otherwise) and Dew (who needs every tiny improvement he can get). Sigurd grabs a Steel Lance that he might use once or twice, Cuan does nothing because he's going to be getting a shiny new Silver Lance very soon. Then everyone heads out, and we set up the Diedre/Ethlin conversation that gives the latter the Light Sword, always a handy thing to have around. Shame it can't be used to heal you like in FE5, but that would be kind of broken beyond belief in this game. Oh, and Ardan begins his long, LONG trek to the peninsula where he gets the Pursuit Ring. Why is it hidden out there? Who knows.

So we're on a bit of a time limit here. Lachesis has to be saved, and her three guards must be kept alive to get the Knight Ring. Heirhein castle has to be seized by turn 11 I believe in order to ensure enough time to save the village with the Bargain Ring. Fortunately it's not too hard to pull this off. Eliot gets killed by Cuan just as planned, Ethlin and Lachesis heal people a bit, everyone who can reach positions themselves to deal with the next batch of enemies. Everyone who can't either positions themselves for later in the chapter or hangs around Evans, waiting for Diedre to eventually warp them closer to the action.

The second group always gives me trouble for some reason. I decide to be a bit more cautious than I usually am, taking an extra turn to soften them up on enemy phase before getting back to the usual tactic of cleaning up then rushing ahead with canto. Noish ends up in danger, but I manage to get through it all okay due to the enemy AI being legendarily thick (a guy at 1HP in my range? **** that let's aimlessly poke Cuan) and Ethlin nabs the Return Ring. I also take this time to play around with the castle music glitch that lets you play the castle town music on the world map. No real reason, just felt like doing something silly.

Then we conquer Heirhein. Sigurd softens the boss with a Javelin then gets the kill, others kill the surrounding armors for EXP, healing happens, everyone is happy. I'm just barely in time to preserve the Bargain Ring village with the newly recruited Levin and Sylvia. And now for a short break due to the length of these chapters.

Yep, my short breaks during chapters are never going to last, I get way too hyped up to keep playing.

Chapter 2 continued

Moving forward, and more importantly, Cuan gives Fin the Hero Lance. Fin has just upgraded from decent to KILL. Then it's time to advance and prepare to fight Voltz, get his Elite Ring on someone who can benefit from it, recruit Beowulf with someone rich (ie Sigurd, since he has two rings he doesn't need that he could sell sometime, on top of 30,000 gold on hand), and laugh at the fact that Voltz's squad are complete pushovers. Then Beowulf can give Lachesis some stats and then avoid the hell out of her because I don't want them paired, but the conversation is too good for her to pass up. Oh, and Dew talks to her too to give her the Thief Sword, which is a nice utility tool. Man, Lachesis is a popular lady.

So Ardan gets his Pursuit Ring, Ethlin kills Voltz to get Elite, which she'll use for a little while and then sell off to someone, probably Lachesis (who I want to have promoted by the start of chapter 4 at the latest). Everyone in the north forms a wall to wait for the legion of Voltz's buddies to swarm on into us, along with the much more dangerous armors from Anphony. Beowulf is stumbling around too, I wanted to recruit him a turn earlier than ended up being possible. Oh well, he's not even getting paired this time so I don't need to care too much. Things go smoothly, Sigurd kills Macbeth (and gets yet another ring, dude is getting rich) and we get told some plot stuff. The EEEEVVIIILLL Dukes Reptor (REPTOR best name ever) and Langbart are spreading rumours that Sigurd is a traitor (nothing will come of that, right?) and we hear about the backstory of the royal family and an affair between the prince and a woman named Sigyn (hey, that's the person whose children Manfloy is looking for), who is also the mother of Alvis. This seemingly innocuous little conversation gives us some pretty crucial details to understanding the story and why later events happen the way they do.

The foot units who gathered on the path to Mackily now might get to actually achieve something! Yay! And Ethlin runs off to Return Levin home so he can recruit Fury in a few turns. Alec follows because he wants to collect one of the villages (the one with the Cutter). Lex and Lachesis meet up for the first of many, MANY turns they'll be spending standing around together before they finally get the hint and start banging.

The canyon leading to Mackily is one of those cluster****s I "love" so much. Ballista covering the approach, lots of fairly dangerous enemies, including your first encounter with enemy mages, and Clement protecting himself with a Sleep Staff. Not an easy place to get through. But get through I do. Diedre breaks her Silence staff against Clement because...EXP. It's not like she'll ever have a chance to use it again, and I doubt anyone else will care about using it unless I feel like using it on Reptor in chapter 5. Everyone clears a path for Sigurd to go seize. Yay.

Another "break", who knows for how long. Before I do though, I'll mention that the Duke Knight boss that will be approaching me with a Horseslayer is Zyne. His portrait is awesome, because it gets used for like six different enemies throughout the game. Collectively, people refer to them as the Harolds, after the first boss of chapter 6, Harold. Zyne comes first, but his name isn't as catchy. ALL HAIL HAROLDS! WE SHALL HERALD THE COMING OF THE HAROLDS

I've had her die to Mareeta before in a previous playthrough. It just force-starts the cutscene and leaves Nanna trapped in the room with whatever enemies are left, effectively screwing her over.

Chapter 2 continued

Let's get this finished.

Oh hey plot. Manfloy is informed that the prince of Grandbell was just assassinated, and reveals that he's blackmailing Alvis into something. Things are getting interesting now!

Levin recruits Fury, by the way. That happens while everything else is happening.

Not much happens for a while, then Sigurd and Cuan begin the process of engaging the massive cavalry army Zyne has with him. They do some damage then retreat a bit to lure them into reach for the rest of my team.

This battle is a pain in the ass because for some reason, all my units decide that dodging is for wimps and will gladly let five straight attacks hit at 30% hit. That makes me take a few tries, and I think this is the longest I've ever spent trying to handle this particular fight. And then when I get positioned really horribly, suddenly they decide that dodging EVERYTHING is in vogue and even very accurate attacks miss. Weird, but I'm certainly not going to complain about it! Fin ends up killing Zyne, then I just need one more turn to mop things up before I can charge down Shagaal and end the chapter.

Speaking of which, Sigurd and Cuan do just that. People who joined mid-chapter get warped/returned for their arena journeys, and Sigurd "kills" Shagaal, only not because Eltshan shows up to rescue him. Guess he's not entirely thrilled about us invading his country and trying to kill his king, kind of puts a damper on his friendship with Sigurd. Oh well, surely that won't cause any problems, right guys?

Chapter 3: Lion King Eltshan

Make one Disney joke and I'll slap you <_<

Player phase music:

So now Shagaal wants to re-take his country, Sigurd is still under orders to hold it, and everything is about to be war. That's bad grammar but I don't care. Also Sigurd and Diedre have a kid now, Celice. So she's going to be staying in the castle now (the game physically won't allow her to leave). As usual, before the actual killing begins, we go to the arena and distribute items around. Worth noting that this is our last chapter for Cuan, Ethlin and Fin as well; all three depart at the beginning of chapter 4. Maybe we'll see them again some day though!

Lex promotes partway through the arena. That Elite skill really does do wonders. Then as everyone leaves the castle, I have Holyn do the conversation that gives Ayra the Hero Sword. She won't hold onto it forever, not when I have more useful units to give it to, but I don't want to waste turns sending her back home quite yet so she'll probably hold it at least until I capture the first castle (Madino).

I split my forces up into three main groups. Levin, Azel, Jamka and Dew head east to deal with the approaching armors, Lex goes west to fight the lance knights and Lachesis and Ardan follow, Fury and Alec head northwest to deal with pirates/mages, and EVERYONE ELSE goes north in a massive army of impending death for my enemies. Actually that's not quite true; I realize Aideen should be heading east as well to eventually get the Restore staff village, so she turns around to join that group. Speaking of that group, they easily dispatch their targets. Lex ends up soloing most of his foes, for some reason they prefer to target him even when Lachesis is within their range. Sigurds group has no problem either, Fury does struggle a bit because she can't dodge the mages reliably enough for my liking, but there's no hurry really, she can afford to fly off to intercept a pirate and let others handle the magic users.

The AI continues to mystify me as pretty much every single enemy in the area around Madino attacks the person they could harm the least/get hurt by the most. Makes it pretty easy to handle that section of the map! Sigurd goes to take on the boss (as usual, when *isn't* he doing that?) and everyone else either cleans up other enemies (if they're going to be waiting to deal with the pirates) or heads back south (if they're going to be dealing with the next little problem area). Sigurd doesn't quite manage to get the kill though, so Cuan steps in to finish the job, picking up a Thunder Sword that he's sure to make great use of when he sells it for more money to buy...uh...well he doesn't need to pass down anything but what he already has, but money is still nice, despite how little of it actually gets inherited! And then I capture Madino and position myself for the next threat.

Plot stuff! We meet Claude, who brings the news that Reptor and Langbart are trying to frame Sigurd and his father for the murder of the prince. We also meet Tiltyu, who is...traveling with Claude because...? She's Reptor's daughter, incidentally. Claude also mentions that he doesn't think Alvis is against Sigurd *or* or Sigurd's side, because there's definitely no sort of ambiguity as to what allegiance that guy has, no sir. And we get the most important event - Deidre gets the sense that something bad will happen, so she leaves her son with Shanan so she can go find Sigurd. And then along the way, she's intercepted by Manfloy, who captures her and teleports them both away. Some might initially think that a magic user capturing Deidre, who is something of a magic tank, is a tad hard to stomach, but as it turns out, she could hit all her stat caps and he would still destroy her in combat. Dude's no slouch.

And that's it for now, because I have to go buy food! When we return to chapter 3: Shagaal makes his last stand, and Eltshan and his Cross Knights are sent into the fray. Our first encounter with an enemy wielding a holy weapon approaches!

The fact that I needed two posts just to cover the first leg of this chapter should probably be making you realize this is one of my favourite chapters in the game.

Chapter 3 continued

Before anything else happens, Ethlin Returned Cuan and then herself (yay Return Ring) home so she could promote, plus they each got a bit more arena work done.

To deal with the Cross Knights, I set up Lex (with his Hand Axe) and Cuan (with his Javelin) ahead of the pack (but just outside of Eltshan's range, because you don't fight that guy and live) to soften up as many as possible, while a few other 2 range users hang farther back to hopefully draw in one of them. Lachesis gets as close as she safely can so that with Sylvia's help, she can talk to her brother (that's Eltshan for those keeping track at home) to get the Earth Sword and more importantly to make him leave and go get executed by Shagaal. His troops stay around, but they're a lot more manageable than a guy with 52 attack and a 38% crit rate.

Despite screwing up my placement for Sylvia's dance (I ended up forgetting to put Lachesis in the square, so I had to scramble a bit and sub-optimal people got danced instead of the ones I wanted), I still reduce the enemy to two Cross Knights, one at full HP, the other down to just 10. Not a bad result for one turn's work. Then we get our brief introduction to Trabant, king of southern Thracia. His dragon knights are here to serve as mercenaries and come to attack me, led by a butterfly. Seriously, the guy's name is Papillion. He's also a Harold. Anyway, we'll be seeing more of Trabant later on. Between this game and FE5, you should expect to hear a lot about him, because like Alvis, he's a very interesting character and one I think the writers did an excellent job on.

Ethlin triggers the guards around Silvail to start approaching, then we begin to slaughter them leisurely. I say leisurely because I could kill Shagaal and seize before Papilion and his crew reach me, and I want to kill them for EXP and for the Life Ring butterfly Harold drops. No idea who will get it yet, but I'd rather figure it out later than just skip out on a very handy item. Anyway, while that business happens Ayra nabs the village that gives +1 defense and Fury grabs the +3 strength one. Told you I favour her and her daughter. Expect to see Fee inherit the Hero Lance (duh, she's the only one who can besides *spoilers*) as well as Power and Shield rings, if not even more than that <_<

In the end, Sigurd gets the Life Ring because he was the last person available who could kill Papilion. He probably would have ended up with it eventually anyway, so it's no big deal. Then comes the agony; I'm trying to have Lex kill Shagaal so he can grab the Silver Blade and hold onto it so he can pass it down to Delmud. Shaky hit rates, but it will be worth it to have Delmud actually have a real weapon in gen 2. The ability to use the arena to burn some RNs is kind of helpful here. I hate to play RNG manipulation but it's not like "land one hit at 44% accuracy" is that big a stretch to ask for, and the alternative is to just waste time chipping at him forever to keep his health low enough (because being on a castle heals you every turn). In the end I get what I wanted, and then it's time to fight some pirates and protect the Brigid/Claude/Tiltyu group. But that will happen next update.

Alright so this is the worst chapter in the game, for reasons I'll get to when I reach them. It. Reach it. It involves trees.

I spent pretty much this whole chapter wishing I was in a desert instead. I think that says something about it.

For the music of this game but its links are not very copy/paste friendly. Shame too, this chapter has good music.

This one?

One of my favorites in the game. Probably my second favorite, actually.

Then Beowulf can give Lachesis some stats and then avoid the hell out of her because I don't want them paired, but the conversation is too good for her to pass up.

Aww, I like the Beowulf/Lachesis pairing. <_<

Every time a Harold showed up, I just kept thinking, "There's no way they're going to use this sprite again"... And then they used it again. And it just kept happening, and became funnier and funnier every time.

Next update is right now, apparently.

Chapter 3 continued again

And now it's time for more manipulation, this time of the AI. The first of the pirate bosses (Warrior, technically, but you know what I mean) carries the ever valuable Leg Ring. Sylvia wants this, but she already needs to buy a 40,000 gold Knight Ring. This means I'll be having her kill Dobarl. This means I'll be killing his men, letting him retreat to get reinforcements, and repeating that until Sylvia gets close, then I'll be killing his men so he goes into "retreat mode" but my units will wall his escape route off, so he won't attack and she can poke him the rest of the way to death. It's kind of tedious, but useful, and I have loads of time anyway since Dew has to travel all the way out to Blagi Tower to get the Wind Sword. Also Ethlin gets to chat with Cuan and give him the Gae Borg. Yay powerful weapon that he won't even get a chance to use before his departure.

So Brigid does her standard retreat path and Tiltyu does her standard "get hit and go Wrath crazy" routine and Claude wanders around to heal if he needs to. Fury is heading their way to help, and my units who were chilling in the north now start wiping out pirates to get Dobarl to retreat. Dew leads the group so he can steal lots of money. Unfortunately Tiltyu actually dodges the first attack thrown her way, which interferes with the Wrath strategy a bit. Sheesh, give me a way to get 100% crit rate and I still am unlucky enough to have it not work. Everything else goes smoothly, and she eats the axe hit needed to get Wrath going soon enough anyway.

Noish/Ayra and Aideen/Midir are officially lovers now, so that's nice that I don't need to shackle them together anymore.

I just now realize it's Pizarl, not Dobarl, that comes out with the Leg Ring. I'm not going to edit my previous mistakes because...uh...because. Anyway. Stuff happens and it all drags out a long time but there's never any sort of doubt that I'll achieve all my goals. The new joiners get sent home to do their arena-ing, people stand next to their future lovers when possible, etc. And Dew heads off to the tower and that takes a while because it's another stupid hidden treasure. Not as valuable as the Pursuit Ring or Hero Axe, but still nice. I almost forget to have Aideen give Brigid Ichival, but then I remember and it all works out. And Fin manages to promote at the very end, allowing him to buy a Silver Lance so he can have plenty of options when he returns.

And then we get plot. Reptor and Langbart show up, declaring that Sigurd is a traitor to the Granbell kingdom, and suggesting that Alvis is working with them. Sigurd and co. escape to the kingdom of Silesia. And that is chapter 3, completed!

Huh. I guess I searched "in" instead of "of" or something. Either way, yeah, it's good, probably around fourth or fifth for me (I think I'd go with Dance in the Skies>Door of Destiny>Final Holy War>Disturbance/Lion King Eltshan)

Yeah, there's a lot of them. What's also hilarious is when they re-use freaking Shagaal's portrait in chapter 8. You'd think a king would get something unique, but nope.

Yeah, this topic's nearing 500; probably going to need a second topic to finish this game.

Suggestion for next undertaking after FE4: FE11, showing off every level including the Gaiden chapters. Once you've become skilled at Fire Emblem, it really becomes surprisingly hard to force yourself to kill off your units in order to get those gaidens. The characters that are recruitable in those chapters really are awesome, though.

That would make sense I think, that way I could put FE6 in between it and FE3, then finish it all off with Thracia 776. Yes, the game that was suggested first is going to be done last. It's the most fitting end I can think of, nothing is more satisfying than actually managing to beat it after all the hell it puts you through, so it should be the most satisfying finale to this series playthrough.

Hooray Genealogy! I am (veeeeery slowly) going through it for a fourth time with these pairings (none of which I've done before):

Ayra/Lex
Edain/Claude
Lachesis/Finn
Sylvia/Holyn
Fury/Azel
Briggid/Dew
Tiltyu/Levin

I've conquered the first castle of chapter 5, and the only folks I haven't been able to promote are Dew, Sylvia, and Ardan (lol Ardan). Looking forward to the kids, especially since I've never had Ayra's kids with Elite or Arthur with Holsety before.

I did one subs run, so I've only done two pairings, but, yeah, those are the two that most people have done by now. I did Ayra/Holyn (obviously) and Ayra/Noishe, which was pretty good. Critical was a nice skill to have. I did Tiltyu/Azel my first time for the standard pairing, and Tiltyu/Lex the second time for Ambush/Wrath (thus making Lex unavailable for Ayra). It was nice in theory...but the kids get crappy magic and kind of have trouble 1HKOing people.

Chapter 4: Dance in the Skies

Player phase music:

One of my absolute favourite tracks in the game. Feels very appropriate for a snowy region.

Arena stuff and item manipulation goes here. Finally have my Leg+Knight ring Sylvia set up going strong. Lots of conversations to get done in this chapter, Levin/Fury will get completed, Azel/Tiltyu can get a boost, Sylvia/Claude can get going, and Aideen can give Midir the Hero Bow, which is awesome (albeit total overkill against the pegasus knights here). Also we lose Cuan, Ethlin and Fin, who go home. They promise to come back soon though. Eager to see that happen!

And now on to the exciting part. Noish is carrying the Hero Sword around now because he's pitifully underleveled (mainly because his stat gains have sucked so he can't make much arena progress; Alec is stomping him in strength despite being the "fast" one) so that should hopefully help him out a bit. Lachesis is a walking arsenal of stuff, Sigurd has every ring imaginable because he hasn't had need to sell most of them yet and he needs to pass a few down anyway. Midir gets his new bow, Levin is carrying the magic ring around but will probably sell it eventually so Tiltyu or Azel can pick it up since their kids will need it more than Sety ever will, and Lex bought the Pursuit Ring since it's getting passed down to Delmud. Now if any enemies are weighed down enough for him to double with the Hero Axe, they've gone from "dead" to "REALLY dead".

The wind mage squad goes down pretty easily, then the pegasus knight group decides that half of their team should suicide into Lachesis. Not the brightest tactic. Then it's just clean up and moving forward while picking off the handful of remaining enemies. Sylvia heads up to the village that will give her the Defense Sword, and then I save and reset because of the freezing glitch everyone knows and loves. Then people with 2 range start poking at the guys surrounding Thove while I wait for Dew to catch up enough to fix the bridge. Lex and Lachesis fall in love around here too, so that leaves just Holyn/Brigid, Sylvia/Claude and Tiltyu/Azel to complete. And Levin/Fury but we all know that one will be finalized pretty damn soon.

And then Sigurd, Dew (!), Lachesis, Fury and Levin all team up to slowly whittle down Maios so I can seize. Aideen and Lachesis begin the process of warping/returning people home for the second part of the map, while the dudes who can't cross the mountains in the south stick around. I realize I've left several villages unclaimed, so I'll have to figure out later on who will manage to find time to pick them up I guess. And that's it for now.

Chapter 4 continued

Now to keep sending people into their positions while we wait for the lengthy scene of Mahnya and her squad getting owned to finish.

I decide that Dew will collect the villages after I have him give Claude all his money. Seems like the best way to make sure I can get it distributed to whoever I want without having to waste time having them visit the villages themselves. Still killing time waiting on the battle to end so I can advance, one of Mahnya's squad manages to dodge both shots from one of the Beige Ritter dudes, kind of funny. Then their luck runs out and they start eating the massacre we all knew was coming.

Finally it's time to do something! Not very much though, some standard rescuing of the civilians, some slaughter, Levin heading home to get Holsety, the dudes up north preparing to smack Pamela and her crew around. Nothing too exciting ever happens down here until you get to Lamia's squad, they're actually capable of posing a threat. The civilian rescuing does lead to something weird though. Sylvia dances some people while standing next to one and somehow she teleports on top of it when she's done, not gaining a level and making the civilian vanish. Odd little glitch, and after I tried again it stopped happening. And then Tiltyu and Azel fall in love so I'm happy and almost done all my pairings.

Lex and Brigid lure in a couple of enemies from Lamia's group, then I take advantage of Sylvia being awesome (can you imagine if Ninian/Nils or Tethys or Elphin/Lalum had 4-way refreshing?) to completely wipe out the group. Sigurd, Lex and Lachesis go onward with Claude and Sylvia trailing as support and they make short work of the final castle of the map. All in all not a particularly tough chapter, and one that gets slowed down by the forests a lot, but I still find it fairly fun, especially because the music is great.

Up next will be chapter 5, AKA the final chapter of the first generation.

Ah what the hell, let's finish this off right away.

It should go without saying, but this will be the most spoiler-heavy chapter of the game, since the plot events here are one of the best parts of it.

Chapter 5: Door of Destiny

Player phase music:

Another great one. Also go back to my prologue update and listen to Alvis' theme some more because we get to hear it again here.

Up first, the final arena work for this set of characters, and throughout the chapter there will be last minute item manipulation going on to ensure all the kids will inherit the things I want them to inherit. I do find it amusing that with Sigurd's badly wounded father rushing towards us, our first instinct is to fight in the arena <_< Less amusing is that now that she has the Defense Sword, Sylvia can start getting into Prayer range easier, which means I'm looking at endless, tedious fights where she papercuts her way to victory. I could skip it, but more money now means slightly more money for Leen, which makes it easier for her to get the Leg Ring in 2nd generation.

I split off a few people to handle the enemies in the west and everyone else goes east. After a turn of nothing, we get more plot. Alvis is talking to the dying king, explaining why Sigurd is evil, and hey look, Diedre appears and is married to Alvis now. So that's where Manfloy took her after he wiped her memories out. Curious turn of events, huh? Anyway, the first line of enemies get royally owned and Sigurd positions himself to receive the broken Tyrfing from Byron, who promptly dies. Right now it goes into storage, it will get repaired a bit later on, once I capture Lubeck.

So the wave of axe knights kind of suck and they all die to Lachesis, Sigurd and Lex. The Beige Ritter does not fare much better, getting dropped down to three members in short order, all of whom quickly die on the next turn. I'm able to set up Andre to be killed by Brigid, which is always fun to see. Sigurd kills a dude and it gets his Silver Sword to 50 kills. It's time to start seeing critical hits destroy things! But before that can happen, Levin nukes Langbart with Holsety. Lex got a few chip shots in on his dad while he was around, which didn't contribute anything of note but was fun to do anyway.

Hey look, Cuan and Ethlin arrive with a group of knights (no Fin though). Apparently Ethlin brought her 3 year old daughter Altenna along, and Fin is back in Lenster looking after their newly born son Leaf. Cuan isn't too thrilled that Ethlin is insisting on following them to meet Sigurd, but he accepts it. They're starting to cross a desert very slowly (what with horses on sand being very immobile and all). I bet that when I come back and do my next update, we'll find out how their journey goes.

By next update, I mean right now

Chapter 5 continued

Turns out Cuan's paranoia was right! Trabant followed them, and now it's a bunch of lance knights with no mobility because of the desert fighting an armada of dragon knights, all wielding Horseslayers (aside from the Hero Lance wielding boss and Trabant himself). Over the next few turns, they will be destroyed one by one, until eventually Ethlin's death allows Trabant to take Altenna hostage, forcing Cuan to surrender and allow himself to be killed. Trabant then flies off with the girl and the Gae Bolg, and leaves his troops behind to come after my army. Pretty brutal stuff. Also, we find out that Reptor is worried Alvis isn't on his side, and Manfloy shows up and seems to think the plan is for Alvis to betray Reptor, but Alvis is adamant about not helping in the resurrection of Loputouso, though he's not opposed to allowing the Lopt Sect to exist without being oppressed. Still got to wonder whose side that guy is really on.

Now we head into the desert. Fury gets to deal with the Meteor mages to help clear a path, and I try to make what progress I can before the Thracians show up to cause trouble. I also discover another little glitch (I have encountered a lot of these lately for some reason) where Sylvia sells the Leg Ring, but retains her boosted movement because she was in a castle and I guess the game counts her remaining movement from what she had before she entered it. Same happened in reverse with Sigurd, he bought the Leg Ring but he did not gain its movement until the next turn.

Sigurd makes it to the next castle even before Ethlin dies and takes out one of the annoying guys with the sleep staffs. Also worth pointing out that the dragon knight boss here, Magorn, is a Harold. Lachesis kills the boss with an Iron Bow, Fury keeps skewering Meteor mages, everyone else follows along with the crowd and prepares to intercept the dragon knights. Sigurd seizes Phinora, and then is informed of the death of the Lenster knights. Not too happy to hear that his sister and best friend were killed. Then we see Reptor preparing to lead his forces into battle, and Alvis' general reveals in private that the plan is...to betray Reptor. In less plot relevant news, Claude/Sylvia is complete. One more to go and we're all set!

For some reason the Thracians change the direction they were going in and the end result is an extra turn before most of them can be killed. The AI really likes to travel in formation when they can, I guess this was caused by them getting off track or something? Anyway, they get killed pretty easily. Azel gets sent home so Dew can give him the money he needs to buy the Magic Ring, everyone who is useful in combat or has staffs goes south to deal with Reptor's crew, and Holyn/Brigid completes itself, meaning my pairings are all done! Now we just have to make the final approach to end the first generation.

Long period of nothing happening as I prepare to have Levin stand on the side of the cliff to lure over a mage so we can trigger Reptor's group to start moving, and trigger the Meteor mages to turn on him and help me out a bit. That happens, and also Aideen shows off why I was dancing her along all this time, as she uses that old Silence staff that's been sitting around for an eternity to remove the threat of Reptor's Torhammer tome. With that threat out of the way, it's not hard at all to mop up his troops and kill him before the effect wears off. Then Sigurd talks to Aida and we win!

We get told that Alvis has known of our innocence all along, but has needed to pretend to work with Reptor and Langbart in order to bide his time until he could find a chance to turn on them. He has a parade held in honour of our triumphant return. And then the biggest reveal of them all comes. He introduces Sigurd to his wife. You see where that's going. He then announces that Sigurd is a traitor, his troops open fire, wiping out most of the cast, and Alvis himself personally kills Sigurd, then goes on to declare himself Emperor of Grandbell, with great popular support, I might add. And it's many years before things start to go badly again, but that's a story for another time. For now, everyone you've spent the game getting to know and love is now missing or dead.

And that's the end of the first generation

I kind of want to play a bit more so I'm posting again <_< If not this then I'll have to spend the night playing some Mass Effect instead perhaps.

On the subject of Fire Emblem, here's my ranking of the final chapters of various games.

FE4 > FE5 > FE7 > FE11 > FE2 > FE10 > FE6 > FE3 > FE8

FE6 not low enough.

What an awful final chapter. ...Well, assuming you're counting the 1000 Mamkute Battle as part of its final chapter.

Well, the ones below it aren't exactly spectacular. FE3 is really terrible, it has a slightly interesting gimmick, sure, but then it becomes a stupid luck based mission because the dragons have atrocious accuracy but kill everyone in 2-3 hits, and Medeus is just terrible. It's only redeeming feature is that his battle music is ****ing amazing, but having the final battle be against terrible enemies and boil down to some minor luck (unless you saved up a use of the Again staff and then you just attack, dance, Again, attack, dance and you've probably won before even finishing that sequence). And FE8 is pathetic because the Demon King is a total lamer. The big long path full of Mamkutes isn't amazing, but it's not like a ton of random monsters are hugely exciting either.

Damn it I'm in the mood to continue, why won't this topic fill up? I don't want to just spam four meaningless posts to get it to 500.
