The maximum prison sentence in Norway is 21 years, but convicts who pose a danger to society can be held after their sentence is up - a virtual life sentence.

I'm sure a lot of it is the bias that anything smuffin uses as a reference will invariably contain, but norwegian prison life sounds better than what a lot of free people have here -_-

Look, this is a Smuffin topic so I'm just going to put this here because of other people who will be like 'well lol that's not really punishment is it'

no. it is not.

BUT Norway has a very low crime rate (especially intentional homicides). Yes this was a tragedy and yes the system in Norway may need to be changed from now on, doesn't mean it didn't do its job well enough (and better than the US and most of Europe at that)


Again, I'm not trying to convince Smuffin because that's impossible. Just putting this out there for people with actual own minds who still oppose to Norway's justice system.

The Norwegian justice system is a lot better than ours in terms of preventing crime. In terms of that metric (stopping crime), we can probably categorize ours as an abject failure, actually.

the main problem with US prisons isn't even that they don't rehabilitate people...most criminals are neurologically damaged and are beyond saving anyway. the problem with US prisons is that they actually make criminals more proficient at being criminals.

talking about actual criminals of course, not the massive majority of our prison population that's in there for selling marijuana or ridiculous crap like that. the fact that our prison system also turns harmless people like this into actual criminals doesn't help either of course
