I've had a hankerin' for an extremely long sci fi epic, and since David Lynch is a boss I am thinking about watching Dune.
But I've also heard that this is one of the most reviled films ever made, so could someone explain why / recommend me a version of the film that is better received?

Giant f***ing space worms are literally the best thing ever created and you get to see lots of them f***ers in both versions so watch both and decide for yourself.
David Lynch's version has a young Sting in a pile of his own sweat fighting fiercely at one point though, so that's a... thing.

It's kinda fun to watch just because Lynch was almost offered the director's chain for The Return of the Jedi, so the film gives you an idea of how Lynch would have done Star Wars.
It's got an incomprehensible plot that mostly consists of dry, monotone narration and overdramatic scenes you can't understand set to some sort of rock opera.
In other words, so bad it's good.
Edit: I don't mind plots being incomprehensible (I liked Mulholland Drive) but in Dune it's not even done that well, and you sorta get the impression that it was trying to make sense, but failed.
