Oh, and some folks might come in and disagree but if you're anything like me you're going to find the majority of the first two seasons pretty damn bad.

The Real Truth posted... First two seasons of DS9 or TNG?
TNG, definitely. I'd say DS9's first season is also its weakest (it's very 'TNG lite' at that stage, but the characterization still manages to come through a bit sharper) but the second season of DS9 is pretty good apart from a rough patch around the middle.
And DS9's first season > TNG's first two seasons pretty easily. It has the benefit of latching onto the already-experienced TNG back when it first aired. The writers mostly knew what they were doing at that point and some of the worse writers from early TNG had been kicked out.

DS9 became quite serialized as it went on. Not only did a main plot genuinely brew up and get heaps of development but the characters had very identifiable arcs as well. A more contemporary show by drama standards and a bit ahead of its time.
I get misty-eyed every time I hear its opening theme.

Oh hey I've been watching this too. I'm only 2 episodes in, though. I watched this when I was really young all the time, and there's only like 2 episodes that I remember so I'm excited about seeing those for the nostalgia trip.
I swear I remember hearing that DS9 was coming to Netflix Instant some time in the fall.
I think it's September. I could check but I... don't feel like it. I have the DVDs, I'll just watch the series through again on Netflix once it arrives to show my support.

Lockes Ragnarok posted... The first episode was pretty good, but the second was hilariously bad. I'll expect more of the bad!
I thought "Encounter at Farpoint" showed promise but it was pretty slaughtered by horrendous overacting. The part where Riker and Troi begin communicating telepathically, their lines are so positively cringe-worthy.
Expect more bad, Lockes. Seriously, the show gets pretty good (but never stops being badly uneven) around season three but until then it's a rough ride.
There are a handful of decent episodes early on though.

Oh, fun fact: I can't remember the character's name but that leader of Farpoint Station? Totally played by Michael Bell. You might know him better as Raziel from Legacy of Kain. No? Then Russian soldiers from MGS2 and The Fear from MGS3.
Yeah, he's up there. Awesome guy.

as for TNG, having watched them all atleast twice by now (once as they were airing growing up and a second time through re-runs) I am skimming the episodes and only watching the truly great ones. I started with "The Big Goodbye". Not the first great episode of season 1, but one of my favorites.

"The Big Goodbye" is fun. I would say it's the first great episode of Season One. I'd even go so far as to say it might be the only great episode of Season One -- but that's just how much I dislike Season One talking right there.
TNG premiered three weeks after I was born. My grandmother raised me for the most part and she'd been a big TOS fan back in the day. So yeah, from three weeks old onward I was a Trekkie.

My mother was the an original fan growing up and every week as a family we would watch the new episode of TNG. I love all Holodeck related episodes, the later seasons had so many great ones.
