You can't really say "**** Fox." The show is clearly not designed to be popular in a ratings sense, and to do so would surely ruin it.

No other network would take it either!

Not exactly. They had at least one more season of ideas they wanted to do. But they had a feeling they were going to be cancelled and so they stuffed a lot of the plot points they had planned into the final episodes. That's why the third season feels so rushed.
