As ironic as it is I don't really get why people are required to wear a helmet. He's not endangering the life of another person by not wearing a helmet.

Same thing with Seatbelts. I'm only endangering myself, why does the gov't care? But then again Suicide is apparently illegal. so....

The government justifies this crap by claiming that these people raise the medical costs for everyone else, which is somewhat true.
And as they continue to socialize our medical system and move towards single-payer, you can expect MORE of these restrictions, as that justification becomes MORE true. Just you wait Palmer, pretty soon eating at Wendys more than once a week will be illegal!

He's not compassionless, he's just wondering why we have laws protecting people from their own stupidity.

In case I'm not making myself clear, I find it downright unsettling that people believe that it's okay for someone to be killed as long as it's their fault.

I don't believe it is, and I wasn't arguing it.
I believe in assisted suicide, but that's about as far as that line of support goes for me.
However, my point is more that we shouldn't be wasting effort on protecting people from the sheer stupidity of something like this.
People don't like being told by their Government what they can and can't do.
It's like a 15 year old girl being told she is forbidden from dating the slacker no good Highschool Senior. What is the first thing that girl does? She sneaks out her bedroom window to go meet up with said Highschool Senior.

tbqh Pot is another thing that should be legalized. Wasting who knows how much on something harmless when we could and should be gaining money on it instead.
If you're riding a motorcycle, safety isn't your first priority to begin with. Not surprised only half of them wear helmets.
People are against seatbelt and helmet laws because it is entirely beyond the right of a government to make such laws. If you have a government of free people, the only legitimate laws are those that govern your dealings with others. Rules that you have to follow even if you don't interact with another human in any way are suitable only for slaves. Seatbelt and Helmet laws do not create an enslaved people, but any government willing to enact such laws is willing to enact any other law they find convenient.

they aren't raising the medical costs if they're dying!

Motorcycles are plenty safe if you aren't stupid. Crashes are more dangerous, but you generally won't have a serious crash if you're smart.

A very very valid point. The same logic that applies to gay marriage.

Do you realize what an insane leap of logic this is?
Do you really think that the intent of safety laws is to restrict, and that it follows the same paradigm that would have them pass laws for the sake of government convenience?
I don't know what to say to you people. You have no grasp on reality. None.

The intent doesn't matter. The fact is it IS the government overreaching. I'm not saying they're bad laws, but he does have a valid point that you can't ignore - The government stepping in and telling you how to be when it doesn't involve others sets a bad precedent.
Pretty sure a law like this gets pushed more by PACS that are representing the motorcycle companies and less by politicians that are trying to control your lives. If somebody dies using your product it's not really good for business, whether they were being idiots or not doesn't really matter.
Basically, "How can we make motorcycles appear safer so more people will buy them?"
"Force people to wear helmets so that there are less deaths and we can advertise that!"
"GENIUS"
So they give a lot of money to a candidate so that he'll push the law for them.
This topic certainly raises a problem with our government but it isn't the problem that people are addressing.
assisted suicide and not wearing a seatbelt are not the same thing
at all
I never said they were. But both laws have to do with the rights and life of an individual, and I find it ironic that some of the same people who think that sick people should have a right to die if they should so choose would be against people having the right to put themselves in a dangerous situation (such as not wearing a seatbelt). What's next, a ban on mountain climbing and doing skateboarding tricks?
