I will say that HG/SS did do a good job of fleshing Kanto out again. They brought back the Seafoam Islands, Viridian Forest, and Cerulean Cave.

GSC > BW > RBY > RSE

The last three are pretty close to each other, but GSC has to be the best.

I'd rather have one big great world than two average ones with issues.

One of the downsides to Kanto is that they put a bunch of Pokemon over there that end up being completely irrelevant by the time you get over there. Which wouldn't be a problem, except they put NEW Pokemon like Houndoor and Murkrow exclusively in Kanto.

This is actually a great point.

One thing about GSC is that I could never shake the feeling that they were trying to piggyback off RBY. Older Pokemon weren't just there alongside the new, they were prominent. Half of the gym leaders in Johto didn't even use new Pokemon. Off the top of my head, Falkner, Bugsy, Morty and Chuck never used a single new Pokemon, despite the fact that we had new Pokemon of each of their types. New Pokemon like Sneasel, Houndour, and Murkrow were shoved into Kanto for absolutely no reason. The first few routes of the game had mostly old Pokemon. I could go on all day about it.

RSE tried to distance itself from that and make the new Pokemon more important. The majority of Pokemon you meet in Hoenn originated there. Only a few older Pokemon were kept, and the experience felt new. And then people **** on it for daring to be different.

I strongly disagree. I think the pacing in the original games is better - I didn't like the Sevii Islands at all - and though they weren't deliberate inclusions from the programmers, the glitches of RBY add a lot of replay value to that title, which is sorely lacking in FRLG. I also didn't care for the updated soundtrack; I think HGSS was a million times better in that regard.

Pacing? The game's sequence of events is literally exactly the same except the Sevii Islands which you are completely capable of skipping.

The second thing is obvious nostalgia goggle junk that has no place in determining whether a game is better than another.

Well also to be fair, people were mad because for the longest time there was NO WAY to get the older Pokemon in RS, and Emerald only added a handful. Gen III was when Nintendo when crazy cashing in. If you wanted to "catch them all" you needed RS for Gen III, FR/LG for Gen I, and Colosseum and XD for Gen II. Thankfully they've moved away from that.

Not to say the focus on new Pokemon wasn't good. I liked that a lot. That's...also the same reason people like B/W though, so I'm not sure that was ever the issue.

Between the Sevii Islands and Emerald's extended Safari Zone, I think most of the Gen II Pokemon were available. But yeah, the GameCube games were needed up until Emerald was released (plus Ho-oh and Lugia were event only outside of those two games).

I'm pretty sure you have to visit a couple of the islands towards the end of the game, right? I haven't played it since it first came out, but I remember that being the case. At any rate, it's not a big deal, but I personally prefer non-Sevii Kanto.

You talking about the glitches or the soundtrack? If you're talking about the glitches, I'm not sure why that'd be irrelevant - the Mew Glitch is loads of fun to play around with, and though it wasn't included in the game on purpose, it's undeniably increased the game's fun factor for me and many others. And if you're talking about the soundtrack, I can safely say that nostalgia has no part in my opinion. I mean, I have a lot more nostalgia about GSC's soundtrack... and yet I'm fully willing to admit that HGSS has a soundtrack that's equal, if not better.

That Champion theme is pretty boss, yeah. I like the S.S. Anne remix a lot too, but I think the original fit the mood better!

For the most part, though, I think the FRLG versions were usually downgrades. Occasionally, some of the remixes were flat-out bad, like Pokemon Tower.

You're probably right. Like I said, I don't really remember much about FRLG.

Also, I was just making sure about the "second thing," because it seems weird to accuse someone of being nostalgia-biased because of glitches. That seems like the last thing anyone would get nostalgic over, especially since many of the game's glitches went undetected for years.

Revamping the stat system was awful if you consider battling on something beside an online sim. They flat out overcomplicated the hell out of actual cartridge competitive battling needlessly there. Breeding for IVs and all was bad enough, and making us have to train them like that is just annoyingly unnecessary compared to the old way of just fighting whatever and maxing out every stat.

EVs and IVs have existed in every single game.

Lol, I just realized how impossible it would be to catch like a tauros or a chansey with good IVs in RBY. IV breeding actually makes cartridge battling a lot simpler in that regard.
Also, Emerald has the best cloning glitch of any generation, super convenient for cloning pokemon and getting tons of items.

EVs and IVs have existed in every single game.

wasn't his point, EV caps were what were introduced by RSE, and they doubled the range of IVs possible as well.

but personally i'm fine with that. and RSE is the most underrated of the games, but the later games improved everything they made, which is a consistent trend the series has. each game better than the last, so the remake should be pretty awesome in a few years!

especially as it'll prob be on the 3DS, which has better online than the DS by miles. secret bases actually might be fun.

All RS did aside adding new moves, pokemon, and items, and adding abilities, is make the most stupidest and annoying stat even more meaningful to how your pokemon ends up, add a crappy nature system that's more problematic and annoying than anything(wouldnt be so bad if you could control what you'd end up with), alienate 2 entire generations, a bunch of dumbassed contests, and everything involving trying to get Milotic.

Also weren't Berries bugged in RS or something.

Hey! Masquerain is awesome, even if it is one of three part-flying types in my HeartGold team incapable of learning Fly. (The others are Mantine and Jumpluff iirc)
And if we're only going by designs, only two or three among the ones you mentioned are that bad.
Nosepass is weird, but it isn't that bad compared to Probopass. Luvdisk was original and not something like a pile of sludge for once, and would've been awesome with an evolution.
