I did a little bit of research as to what is going on, but I can't find anyone else with my specific scenario.

I have a 2 tb external hard drive that I got no more than 2-3 months ago. I reformatted it off the bat to fat32 so I could play movies/tv shows/etc on my 360. I had no problems at all with it.

Then recently I tried transferring some files and it popped up with an I/O error and I looked it up. That's apparently bad news, but I've only had my HD for so long. Then I tried downloading something and it would stop after a little bit coming up with the same error.

I tried playing files on my computer that were on the HD and it was saying that the files couldn't be found.

So, I let it sit for a few hours so I didn't just throw it against the wall and I came back and hooked it up to my 360 for the night so I could watch something (hopefully) and it worked fine. There were a few issues with my 360 recognizes the portable device but after a few restarts of the 360 it worked.

Then, this morning I went to work and came home to see if I was still having problems and when I tried downloading something it didnt say there was an I/O error, but it just said that the system couldnt find the file specified.and wouldnt download. And files on the HD still wont play on the computer.

Did you run the basic utilities? ScanDisk included with Windows and such?

Run that, and also try HD Tune (Google it). Download it, install it, select your drive, and check the health tab. If it says it is fine, then go and run an error scan. If that doesn't come up with anything, you should probably reformat and see if it works again. Failing all of that, try calling the manufacturer. It should be under warranty.

I tried running a basic (Microsoft security essentials) virus scan, and it doesn't scan anything because according to my computer, there are no files to scan.

Is there anything important on the drive that is not anywhere else?

As far as backing up is concerned? Everything on there can be found again (albeit some of it was a pain in the rump). Nothing really backup related.

Alright. Try running ScanDisk first (not Microsoft Security Essentials, ScanDisk is a program for detecting/fixing problems with drives). You can do that by right clicking on your hard drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools tab, and then Check for Errors (or similar). Tell it to automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Run it. It should tell you if there are any problems it can find, and if it can fix them. If it can't fix it, try reformatting it.

If you ever need a recovery program, Recuva works very well. I used it on my neighbor's failing hard drive, and it was able to get all the data off of it easily. It is completely free to use.

Approximately 16 hours ago I played a movie on my xbox with the HD just fine. I havent had issues with that like I mentioned.

I haven't hooked it up to my laptop in well over a day so I hook it up to run scans and whatnot and just for giggles I tried playing something..

and it worked.

But for safetys sake, I'm going to back up what was a really pain in the ass to backup and see whats going on and see if I can get this back on track.

Does this have anything to do with the way I'm organizing my files maybe?

I have it set up like
Music > Artists > Albums > Songs
Movies > Movie folder >Movie file
TV > Show Folder > season > episodes

Too many folders ? Not enough? Irrelevant?

Well I guess it was too good to be true. In the middle of my backup, it popped up saying there was an error transferring.

Went to play the file and another error popped up. Gonna scan now.

Irrelevant.

Do what Zach said.

Could also possibly be a problem with the usb cable connecting your external harddrive to what you're running it on. I doubt it though since I don't think it'd give you an I/O error there.

I heard that could be an issue, but I use the same cable to hook it up to my xbox and that shows no issues.

Yeah if you've had no problems with the cable in any other cases then it's almost certainly not the deal.

Im trying to do the error checking, but when I check the boxes for "fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recorvery of bad sectors" and click ok it just sits there and disappears after a few seconds.

I'm really trying not to sound computer ignorant/illiterate. But augh my electronics never work.

I'm starting to think, since it sometimes can read your files and sometimes can't, that it might be a problem with the actual hardware that reads the data off the drive. In which case you'd need to get it repaired and I hope it's under warranty.

But first check the disk for errors like zach said. Seriously.
