I'm on the third chapter and unfortunately it's going to be a while before I get to new material...GRRM read a handful of chapters at signings and I read the summaries on the internet. Kinda wish I hadn't done that now, but I'm sure I'll do it again for TWoW.

Not a whole lot happening now but the prose makes it enjoyable.

Honestly GRRM is not that great of a writer... He gets unnecessarily long winded all the time. Like the time Littlefinger explained why Harold was "the Heir" which for some reason necessitated going over like the entire Arryn family history.

He definitely has a tendency to get long winded but he has a way with words and dialogue, and especially fleshing out characters.

I guess I should blame his editor(s) if anything. There are so many unnecessarily long winded passages that they definitely should have had him cut.

But we DID need to know that history to know why Harry was the Heir.

He can't just be like:

"Harry is the Heir"
"Why? And heir to what?
"The Eyrie. And he just is."

If anything I think he spends too much time describing dinners and clothes.

About 220 pages in and it's still mostly in the early stage where not much crazy happens. Bran finally had an awesome chapter though. Funny how I find myself looking forward to Bran's chapters the most and Tyrion's the least.

Well Tyrion's are entertaining, but his story just seems the least important. The last Dany chapter was a bit of a bore though so I guess now I'm looking forward to her chapters the least. The North>The East so far pretty easily.

Tbf I'm not a Dany fan like a lot of people are. I enjoyed most of her chapters in ASoS but that's about it, so take that as you will.

Actually for ADwD so far, the proper word for her chapters is "frustrating" more than "boring."

I guess, but I wouldn't say Jon and Dany's parts are doing the unexpected...more like the uninteresting. The rest of the POVs are pretty great so far though.

I will make this one criticism of Martin, I never found the later books as unpredictable as the first one, in large part because I quickly learned that any and every Stark reunion would not happen, and every tragedy that could be inflicted on the Starks would be inflicted upon them.

Mind you I love this series, but grimdark twists where "everything horrible that could happen to the Starks will happen" isn't much more unpredictable than "the heroes will always win"
The best twist Martin could throw in about now is two Starks unexpectedly running into each other IMHO, but I guess I understand why he feels all happiness must wait until the endgame
