That said, it's also plainly not a conduit through which Big Brother can nefariously hold unlimited control over my life and it's kinda ridiculous that you could think this. I personally don't own a car and public transit works just fine for me.

Do you not concede that being dependent on mass transit at the very least puts MUCH GREATER control of your life in the hands of big brother than driving your own car would?

Two things:

1: no.

2: The metro agency running the Long Island buses I use are getting outsourced to a private company, so this point is kinda moot (at least in my case) regardless. Their rates, mind you, are likely to be even higher than they are now so they can actually turn a profit.

Unlike some people I don't see a communist conspiracy behind every government run utility.

SMuffin, why do you assume that mass transit has to be controlled by the government?

Why can't there be privately run bus services and would you have a problem with said services?

Did you know that the "free market" oil prices are driving more people to use mass transit? Routes are usually set up to help lower income families get around. My local city even has a bike rack on most buses to increase the mobility of individuals.

It costs money to use mass transit so that the users of the service pay for it rather than getting a free ride from taxpayers. Would you prefer socialized mass transit instead?

I believe most cities heavily subsidize their mass transit systems, but I may be wrong in this.

In any case, no, I fully support pay-per-use for any and all government services.

Also, private companies that are granted exclusive monopolies by the government aren't really free market entities. I don't care if they city outsources the running of its subway system to a private company or not, that company still operates at the behest of the city, and someone else can't just start a competing company to increase quality of service.

yeah, like how we were so united back in the 19th century when going from one state to another took a week-long stagecoach trip

I bet you people who lived in towns and cities were certainly more united.

The culture of today is increasingly fractured as people retreat into their own private spheres.

I drive everywhere I go because it's simply not feasible to take a bus/bike/walk the distance I need to go to actually get anything accomplished.

This is a good thing. In the 1800s you'd find a bunch of competing fire departments that weren't all under the same government aegis, and when a fire broke out they'd sit there on the street debating who could put out the fire as the place burned to the ground.

There's something to be said for efficiency, especially when it's so closely tied to public utilities.

Muffin, you are being quite ridiculous.

Yes, public transit only takes you some places. So...for the places it doesn't take you, use a car. They're not going to close down roads in places that don't have good public transit already; that would just kill business in the area.

I would take public transit if it was convenient enough. When I lived in the DC area the metro got me everywhere. San Diego's system is not nearly as developed :(

And Smuffin some services are called Natural Monopolies, and are good for the economy. That's something I learned in college.

I used to take the bus to my local community college sometimes. I would walk to my bus stop, and wait. Although there is a schedule, it is not a consistent one. Therefore, the bus would sometimes arrive 5-10 minutes early or late, and I would be waiting there for as long as 30-45 minutes for a bus if my luck isn't good that day. That's not all, though, because I had a transfer stop. Whenever I would finally get there, I would be on my first bus and see the next bus drive off as I arrive. That's another 30 minutes, at least, but it could be longer. It could also be shorter, and take 30-40 minutes. It made scheduling things a big pain. One good thing was that this was free, as my school gave out bus passes to all full-time students.

In all, it would take me 1-2 hours to get to school, one way. I was spending anywhere from 3-4 hours per day on the bus. Driving with a car, takes 15 minutes if I am being dropped off. Add 5 more if I'm parking and the lots are not nearly empty, and maybe 5 minutes for traffic jams if neither is exceptionally bad. Still, that's less than 30 minutes each way. Even if driving takes 30 minutes on a very bad day, that's still about an hour compared to around 4 hours on the worst days. Yeah, I'd rather get a car. Also, I transferred to a school that would take me 2 hours to get to on a good day. On a bad day, that would be 3-4 hours one way. I'm not going to spend 6-8 hours a day on public transit when a car gets me there and back in 1-2 hours assuming I am not traveling during rush hour.

Maybe if they properly funded public transportation and it ran reasonably fast enough (no bus every 30-45 minutes BS), included rail on my route sooner (working on it at my university), and most importantly, design cities to support it, maybe I would use public transportation. As it is, public transportation is a good way to get yourself late or way too early and pissed off, at least in Los Angeles.

However, I will admit that Boston and New York actually know how to do public transportation. I didn't use a car at all in either city, and I was still able to get around everywhere by subway and walking. I wish Los Angeles could be like that, although LA is working on rail.
