Let's assume that it would all be borrowed money. If you were just starting college, how much more money would you pay to go to Harvard, or a peer school like Yale and Stanford, over:
1. Elite schools like Columbia, Dartmouth, and Chicago 2. Very good public schools like Berkeley, UCLA, and Virginia 3. Good private schools like NYU and Boston College 4. Less prestigious local state schools, or less prestigious private schools. 5. Schools with bad reputations for academics. 6. Community college. 7. No college.
I wouldn't. I don't set my expectations in life too high. Just want to learn enough to be able to work in my field of choice, which is computer programming.

I don't really care about the reputation of a school unless the reputation is bad. The schools I went to weren't the '' best '' I could've went to mostly because my parents couldn't afford and I'm pretty damn glad, I keep people complaining about how those '' high class schools '' are freaking boring and full or people full of themselves. Heck I know people who where in the same school as me, changed for one of those schools and finally came back because it sucked too much.
I don't know if it's the same way for those Elite college but still, I would just settle with the school that'd accept me.
1. Less, probably. What I've read about Harvard says it has a pretty bad undergrad experience; broadcasting one professor to multiple classrooms. 2. Less. See above. 3. Less. See above. 4. Less. See above. 5. More. But still less than a good Canadian school. So...like $4,000 more per year? 6. I have...more respect for community colleges than universities with bad academic reputations; I know lots of people who've made the jump to a good academic school from a community colege. So...$3,000 more per year. I still value a solid academic school like Harvard over community colege, even if you will get higher quality teaching at the colege. Good academics are sexy.

Uh...I don't know. Someone from Harvard actually called me at some point and asked me to apply, supposedly because they felt I'd be a "strong applicant". But I wasn't interested and just went to Berkeley instead. Plus I didn't want to pay the application fee.
So, less than Berkeley, I guess.

Oh hey look it's a place for all the folks attending elite schools to act all arrogant, self-centered and pompous in declaring their affiliations to all the lesser folk. "Well, seeing as I attend Dartmouth already..."
(So says the guy attending an elite law school)

mc, what do you mean by "good academics" if you think they aren't taught well? I consider teaching ability to be part of the qualities that make a school have good academics.

What did I say that was pompous or arrogant? He asked how much I'd pay to attend Harvard and I said I'd pay nothing because I literally chose a different school over it for the same price.

Nothing. Like charmander6000, I am also going to be attending a university close to home. USC (University of Southern California), in fact! I've been told that I could have gone to Harvard, because of my GPA and activities. I just didn't bother with it.
I'd rather commute through LA's freeways (world famous parking lots during rush hour!) than deal with moving to the East Coast, and spending a lot on living there. Same goes for living at USC, even. I feel like going on a rant about living in dorms and with roommates, but I'll save it for another time!

so what you're saying is that you're averse to new things and fun
Eh. Bad experiences with roommates, and I'm not really into the idea of dorming in general. I'd rather just focus on other parts of the college experience!
f*** the everliving donkey dick bejesus out of this entire topic. I would never allow a cent of money rightfully mine to to be raped into the hands of a collegiate instiitution of any form... Enough money given to me was mosquito-sucked into such things, and said money was not even mine. It took me several years to see how it was siphoned away for naught as I was left naked and gasping for breath like a fish in a boat. Only then was I able to take control of my own destiny.
Never again will the alluring lies of "automatic, instantaneous awesome job opportunities will throw themselves at you simply because you possess a degree" brainwash those who can influence my decisions.
I would not spend a single United States Cent to attend Harvard or any other collegiate institution... and I say that as someone who throws change to the sidewalk, road or parking lot due to its obsolete nature.
College failed me. It failed to incite interest. It failed to convince me it was God. It failed to seek its tendrils deep enough to suck the blood from me for life. It had me fooled, like it has nearly everyone fooled, but it failed to keep me fooled... It is not to be questioned, but I questioned it, and rather than answer, it chose to try to make me forget, but I did not forget.
How much would I pay to attend Harvard?
How much would Harvard pay me to ensure I never set foot on it's campus?
Two questions have one answer

I believe there was indeed failure, but I'm not so sure on whose part.

I go to a good private school right now, so whatever I pay for that is fine

I'm assuming I wrote that. 11:36 pm... yeah, definitely at least an hour into being blacked out. If all I f***ed up in that post was typing "seek" instead of "sink," I did pretty good. Most people wouldn't be able to type actual words in that state. If drunk typing was an Olympic sport, I would be more than a random username on a message board >_>

I'd honestly probably pay maybe 15K or so if I was basically assured to have a high quality job right out of college. Maybe even more. But why Harvard?
