Also expect spoilers for the HBO series Game of Thrones.
So I just bought the first two books because I thoroughly enjoyed the HBO series of the first one. I'm about 200 pages in the first one already and I notice some small differences and a pretty huge one. First of all, the ages kinda irk me because Jon and Robb seem so much older than Joffrey in the show. Something to get used to I guess! Probably makes for more conflict between Robb and Joffrey in the future though, which should be great. The other changes I noticed were that pretty much half of the characters appearances are much different in the books. Dany has purple (what) eyes and Joffrey is tall and handsome in the books (compared to a smug tiny I want to punch him so bad douche in the show).
The obvious big thing are the wolves. I mean they didn't cut them out of the show but they could've put more emphasis on them or something. Obviously they're meant to be something more important in the next books, I can already tell that now and I'm only one fourth in A Game of Thrones.
That said, it's an incredibly enjoyable read so far and doesn't fall short compared to the show. Just what I expected yessss.
Feel free to tag, but keep in mind that you do not spoil anything post where I am now. Even if I already finished the HBO show, that does not mean I know of all the fun little details that happen in the book! And definitely don't spoil ANYTHING post the first book.

eh, people are just ridiculously young in Song of Ice and Fire, just something you have to get around.

Good timing too, as I happen to be about 300 pages through Game of Thrones. (Though I'm rereading the series, so there's nothing fresh for me...I still find I'm learning new things I didn't realize the first time around.)

Yeah I actually think the ages of the characters on the HBO show (which I've only seen snippets of) is closer to how I personally imagine them. Martin writes a few of his kids too young -- maybe he just doesn't remember what it's like to be eight years old, or maybe he ascribes to that belief that in the medieval era, "kids weren't kids" as long as they are now.

About halfway in A Game of Thrones now and still enjoying it a lot! Expect more 'big' writeups when I get to the second book when it's all new for me obviously. Which will be after the 11th so maybe I shouldn't have made this topic yet, but alas.
I just started rereading the series tonight. I bought the books 1-4 set on my Nook because I figured that's where I want to read the series for now. I'll buy a nice paperback set once all the books are out, I don't like having a mix of paperback and hardcover with varying cover art styles.
Unfortunately I have learned that the Nook version of the 1-4 set does not show up as 4 different books but a single 3000+ page monstrosity. AUGH.
I just finished rereading the first three in the past few weeks, starting AFFC tonight. Would anyone be interested in a character ranking topic? (In another topic, I won't hijack this one.)
I'm going to start rereading them too after I finish this Wheel of Time book.
Also FYI apparently some copies of Dance With Dragons got shipped early by accident so there's probably going to be spoilers flooding everywhere soon, best to be being careful.

Sure, I'm always down for discussing the series. I once made a "top 20 ASoIaF moments" here but don't have it saved.

Oh dear, might be time to start avoiding the internet for a few weeks.

Oh, a big machine with flashy lights. A big machine like that has me written all over it. Well, okay, it doesn't. But give me time... and a crayon --11th Doctor
I'm away for 11 days during which I will do NO READING so one of you can keep this bumped or not (I can make a new topic when I get back but that would be 2 MINUTES OF WORK)
