I recall some battle early on in the game(Chapter 1) being incredibly frustrating, and hearing a lot of griping about it on the board. Was it Dorter Trade City or the thieves fort? I don't recall. Yeah, I remember always having more than one save for cases like the one you mention.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
After several years of missing this fantastic game, I finally pick it up again and start playing! Previously I got about 3/4 through the game, but since it was my brother's copy and he moved away I never finished it.
Now I'm starting over and experiencing it almost as if for the first time. I have a very limited memory of the game's plot details, so I would appreciate no discussion of plot points until after I reach them in the game. I will be commenting both on plot aspects and the gameplay portions, but I tend to run my playthroughs kind of light, so don't expect too many comments from me.
I won't be doing any special sort of run this time, but I will probably not use the named characters that often, especially the game-breaking ones(Orlandu). This is the original PS version being played on my PS2 Slim.
Anyway, let's get going! My first update will be coming up shortly. Expect SPOILERS in my posts, please be forewarned.

CHAPTER 1: THE MEAGER (aka: l i t t l e m o n e y)
I really don't understand the little money slowness thing. Why are those words so slow? Anyway we are now in this military academy with a bunch of cadets talking about the Death Corps and whatnot. Some high ranking people are coming to visit. Oh look it's young Bartz and young Delita! They are like best buds.
We are training to be part of the Hokuten, which is like some group of knight. We are supposed to guard a castle, but then some knight tells us that a "gang of tortured theives" is attacking the town and we need to take care of them. At this point I get to take my first look at my party! Let's see who I have here.
Belmont Heinlein Reeve Evelyn June Scarlet
Not a bad bunch of names, I was expecting to get a bunch of weird ones. I choose Evelyn, Heinlein, June, and Scarlet as my companions on this first fight.
The thieves want to kill every last one of us, but it doesn't really go that way. Delita told me not to rush them, which I don't really understand, but run out and kill them all with relative ease after telling Delita to **** off("Don't patronize me!").
The thief repeatedly reminds the player that my group is bunch of kids and snot-nosed nobles. I'm guessing that the plot will feature conflict around noblility and inequality and such.
Battle is complete and I get 500 Bonus Gil. Is that dependent on anything? Or is it always the same?
Now that the battle is finished I get another flashback I think talking about Balbanes Beoulve's death. That's Bartz's dad. Dycedarg and Zalbag are his brothers, or half-brothers, it seems. Is Alma also Bartz's half-sister? It seems that way.
They are upset that Bartz isn't there, but then he runs in. I guess this is a while ago because he's about to start the Academy. Maybe the academy is like a year, so perhaps this is from another year prior. His father wants him to follow the Beoulve way, which is to serve the crown as a warrior. Balbanes keeps making reference to Delita serving Bartz, which leads me to believe that Delita's family are like servants to the Beoulve family. Pretty sure that causes trouble later.
It also looks like Bartz is the favored son. I wonder if that starts conflict later also.
Nobody in this game has a nose. Back in those days, that was probably for the better.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
It all starts with a scholar guy talking about history and how the truth can be hidden or something. Well it's time to talk about the "real hero" and I have to choose his name. Previously I named him Ramza, but this time he will be "Bartz." Just remember whenever I say Bartz I'm talking about Ramza.
We are now in Orbonne Monastery, where this Princess Ovelia is praying and apparently she is in some sort of danger, because this knight girl names Agrias is telling her to hurry up. The priest guy is named Simon, what a christian-sounding name. Then Bartz comes in with an old man who is a "black night" although obviously he's white. Even his hair is white. Maybe if his armor was black it would make sense but his armor is brown. He mad.
Oh, his name is Gafgarion. I guess he's a mercenary or something. He's putting that b**** in her place all right. Uh-oh, a girl night is wounded. I guess there is a Prince Goltana who at this point is an antagonist.
"...I'm no longer a Knight. Just a mercenary like you." Ah, now I remember that there is backstory coming up. Don't remember all of it but some people die and Bartz becomes jaded or something. Graphics so much better than FFTA.
I've heard about the War of the Lions remake and the way they changed the script to early modern english or whatever. I personally like the original better. It still has a medieval feel to it with the use of words like "knave" and the more formal sentence structures.
Anyway, Goltana's men want the princess. Agrias is bossy and tells us to stay out of it, but Gafgarion will have none of that. Oh no they argue about killing them or not, setting up Gafgarion as some sort of bad egg. The battle is less than exciting as I only have control over one character. We kill all the bad guys like Gafgarion says and that's that. Except I guess we weren't all that smart because nobody stayed to guard the princess.
Ah, the famous line: "Blame yourself or God." after Delita punches the princess like a boss. Bartz apparently had no idea Delita was alive, which causes him to have a flashback, or at least causes a flashback in the narrative.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
Dorter Trade City is generally reckoned to be the first serious battle in the game, yeah. Back when I was new to FFT, I lost a character and continued anyway just to be through with it.
Gil rewards are based on enemy level, IIRC, but War Trophies (which sometimes include extra Gil) are set for every battle.
Dycedarg and Zalbag are Ramza's half-brothers. Alma is Ramza's full sister. And yes, Teta is Delita's sister.
-- I don't like this duchy. Now, it's an adventurer.
There's a handy encyclopedia of characters that can be accessed from the map screen, in case you don't know who someone is. It updates itself as the plot rolls on

We are thought, and reality, and concept, and the unimaginable
So there wasn't much exposition explaining why we went to Mandalia Plains(actually, no exposition at all). I think we are guarding the castle as the guy mentioned earlier.
Thieves are robbing Algus; I guess they are after someone called the Marquis. I remember hearing something about him earlier, but I don't remember. He's important, I think. I am given two choices on what to say:
1. Our duty is to destroy the Death Corps. 2. Saving him is our priority.
I choose 1 and Delita gives me a hard time. I guess destroying the Death Corps means letting Algus die. He doesn't look hurt at all, though. I brought Belmont, Heinlein, and Reeve with me for this one. Belmont is a chemist, the other two are squires. Bartz gains a level, but the others don't. Oh wait, Algus didn't die! Take that, Delita.
Algus talks about Marquis Elmdor. He was the important guy who was visiting. He was captured and Algus is sure he will be killed. He wants our help in saving him, but Delita and Bartz decide that it would be best to get the help of Igros Castle. Besides, Algus was more than a little creepy with the way he kept grabbing Bartz.
At the castle, Dycedarg heaps praises on Bartz, who doesn't really seem to care. They are discussing ransom for Elmdor, but Algus goes nuts and starts asking for 100 soldiers and crap like that. Dycedarg is like "shut up you aren't even a knight lol"
Algus is bitter because his grandpa was a traitor and now his family is hated. He wants to restore their honor so he can be all boss like the Beoulves. This is why he wants to save Elmdor so badly. Zalbag, Alma, and Teta showed up. I think Teta is Delita's sister, although that isn't explicitly stated. When Zalbag leaves, he is like "oh btw the death corps want ransom" as if Algus wasn't going all crazy about it earlier.
Teta is being picked on at school because of her rank. I guess the other noble families are not like the Beoulve family in their well-regard for commoners.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
I took Belmont, Heinlein, and Reeve again. It irritates me how I can take fewer of my players because of the guests. Anyway, we meet a bunch of monsters and Algus complains because he is impatient or something. Delita tells him not to complain and Algus rages.
This battle took me two tries. The first time I got unlucky with a bomb self-destucting and it took most of guys out. Second try I made sure to not let the bombs get critical unless I knew I could finish them.
A knight is interrogating another knight about Gustav. Unfortunately the other knight fails at running away and trips, allowing the knight with the white cape to pull a sword and demand an answer. I guess Gustav is in the Desert. Delita knows the knight as Wiegraf. I guess he's the leader of the Death Corps. I remember the name as being a somewhat important character and a fan favorite from the game, so I'm sure I will see a lot more from him.
Once the battle began, I found myself up for my first real challenge. Took me 4 tries, first time I lost Belmont by just one turn, so I started over. I would have benefitted in this battle with an archer, but I have no bow, unfortunately. The black wizards were causing hell and I couldn't get to them easily. The time I finally beat it, I barely did so. It was very satisfying however once I finished it.
Aftr the battle, Algus had some fun beating up that same poor knight that Wiegraf interrogated earlier. Poor guy just can't catch a break. It would put Algus in a better light if I knew that his desperation to find the marquis wasn't fueled by a selfish snatch for glory and honor. Bam, kicked in the head. Algus is full of pride as a nobleman.
Turns out Gustav is a thief who kidnapped Elmdor. Wiegraf and his gang are trying to be noble thieves or something, and I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be not-so-bad after all.
"Sand ra-a-a-ts?" lol Algus. Looks like we are going to the desert. The discussion about the sand rats seems kinda pointless though, unless maybe it's used later on in the game.
This is supposed to be a desert. Why are there trees? Anyway, we see some of Gustav's men arguing about how they are trapped and will die no matter what happens.
This battle was really easy. I blew through a few phoenix downs but never once was I in danger of losing the battle. Algus became wounded early on and spent most of the battle pacing back and forth in the corner. What a p**** little b****. The nice thing about this map is the house, which was very easy to bottleneck and take out the knights one by one. Delita did a lot of wishing, which let me focus on attacking.
The view goes into the cellar where Wiegraf and Gustav are facing off. Gustav is clearly not the revolutionary that Wiegraf. Gustav seems to be worried more about survival than anything else. The Marquis Elmdor is in the corner. Gustav clumsily attacks Wiegraf and dies. Bartz and the others burst into the hideout ready to fight, but then Wiegraf says that the Marquis is free to go. How noble of him, although Algus thinks that 3 children can take on a knight of his caliber. Luckily Delita stops Algus from acting rashly. Algus is kind of a moron.
After that got into a random battle in Sweegy Woods that managed to level the girls up a bit.
Finally class changed a few of them. I want Belmont to get a few more item abilities before I have him delve into wizardry. Heinlein and Reeve know items but I had them keep their Basic Skill for Accumulate. Might make healing a little sparse but their added power can allow me to be a little more cautious with Belmont and keep him to a support role.

From: KingButz | #022 Some other theives raid the Beouvle Estate, capture Teta and wound Dycedarg. Zalbag has a great line, "Hey! Anybody there!?" when Dycedarg collapses.
The original FFT translation is truly a thing to behold.

Mistake you're making - overlooking the fact that we might not want to be saved.
Aw man Bartz you're in trouble now! Dycedarg is pretty upset that everyone went AWOL to rescue Elmdor. This douchely looking guy named Larg stops his tirade and tells Bartz to relax. After Larg says some nice things, Dycedarg asks the party to participate in the attack on the Death Corps. He says to choose which hideout to attack, but I can only choose 1, so...
Anyway, after we leave, Dycedarg and Larg talk something about the tide turning in their favor, but I doubt they are talking about the fight with the Death Corps. Looks like rescuing the Marquis might have put some other entity in debt to the Hokuten.
At the Thieves Fort, some of the Death Corps mourn their eventually defeat. Looks like they know how badly I'm about to kick their butts. Algus says he wants to be Bartz's friend for life or something. I'm not sure he'll get his way.
This battle was another really easy one. I once again took the three guys with me, and I'm glad I did to avoid the Steal Heart attacks the thieves would surely unleash. Once I took out the two priests, the rest of them fell also. Miluda was no match for us, but we let her escape.
Yeah, she got away. Like I understand taking her prisoner instead of killing her, but just letting her go? Algus insisted that Bartz kill her "with [his] own hands" and that she is an animal. Delita argues for a while and obviously feels bad because he isn't of noble blood like Algus.
Some other thieves raid the Beouvle Estate, capture Teta and wound Dycedarg. Zalbag has a great line, "Hey! Anybody there!?" when Dycedarg collapses. lol. Once Bartz and his crew return to Igros Castle, Dycedarg debriefs them while bed-ridden. The Hokuten plan to finish off the Death Corps, and Dycedarg promises he won't abandon Teta. Delita is all mad, and Algus antagonizes him further saying that commoners like Teta won't be saved. Delita hits him a few times, then runs off after Algus insults him further.
"Get Lost!" lol at that line from Bartz. I guess they won't be friends forever. Algus seems pretty dim, though. Poor Delita. Anyway, Algus did me one last favor in letting Bartz know where to find the thieves.
Not sure if I will ever use the other party members lol. They are pretty far behind in level right now. I already committed myself to avoid grinding in order to keep the difficulty up.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
Bartz and Delita watch the sunset and talk about stuff. Delita must feel pretty bummed, I guess Algus isn't the first person who made him feel crappy. Bartz sucks at providing moral support though and says nothing. I don't know if Balbanes backstory is visited much, but he seems like he was a morally outstanding gentleman. Delita seems to like him.
Great, Miluda again? I'm glad I get to end her this time, even if Bartz doesn't want to do that. With Algus gone, I get to bring 4 people, so Evelyn joins the fight. Another easy fight, now that my people have a little more experience. Bartz seems to remain fairly innocent so far, even as Algus demonstrates the corruption of the oligarchy and Wiegraf and Miluda reinforce this. Delita seems to get it pretty well.
Wiegraf again with the whole lawful evil thing. I remember enough now to know that Teta is not about to be let go. Golagross confirmed that with the whole "No way I'm going to die!" Wiegraf seems pretty mad though that Bartz killed his sister.
First time I tried this battle I lost pretty quickly as I forgot to stock up on consumables and had already run out of phoenix downs. Went back to the city to restock, but was attacked again on Lenalia plateau. I gained my reserves a level or two from that, then prepared to try Windmill Shed again. I took the three guys with me again this time.
This battle is just awful. The field is small, Boco keeps attacking his good friend Bartz, and Wiegraf is an all-around overpowered bastard with his sword techs that can inflict death and stop and have no MP cost. Even without all his buddies he is a force to be reckoned with, and I am supposed to defeat him with four people backing him up.
Anyway, I think it took me 7 or 8 tries to finish this one. At first I tried to charge out in front to kill Boco and prevent him from providing his Choco cure. Those attempts ended in disaster as Wiegraf stasis sword spammed the party into oblivion.
My second strategy was to hold back and have everyone accumulate until the enemy got within range. This strategy got me better results, but still Wiegraf would kill my party faster than I could revive them.
I realized that the only real way to get this done is to make the focus entirely on defeating Wiegraf. Eventually, I barely got his HP low enough so that he would flee, taking the remaining 2 soldiers with him.
Bartz still is totally naive about the corruption going on in his family, even when Wiegraf blatantly points it out. Delita seems to have a better idea of the situation. Gotta give it to Bartz for his loyalty to his family, though.
Delita sucks and always dies. He's not going to gain another level it looks like. This wouldn't happen if he'd follow his own advice not to "rush them!"

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
Interesting about how Zalbag can not give a f*** about having Teta killed. Also makes me wonder whether Dycedarg cared about Teta or actually was lying to Bartz. Well, time to strike down Algus. Delita is mad but of course won't last long as always. Algus sure gained a lot of experience since he was in my group.
Took 2 tries to get this one, and I must admit both times I wasn't even really trying. I had Reeve climb to the top of the fort right away and rain arrows down on the black mages. Heinlein and Belmont went around the backside and while Heinlein got into a bitter fight with the lone knight over there, Belmont passed under the bridge to offer potions for support. It didn't take long until Algus was the only one left. After dealing with the nightmare that was Wiegraf, Algus was nothing. It didn't take long at all to dispatch him and his crummy crossbow. He did take the time to rub my decision not to save him on the plains in my face.
Delita hates Bartz now also, not really sure why. "Leave me, Ramza! After Algus, you're next!" Bartz is being a silly kid too, but I can see that he is starting to become like his jaded self we see in the prologue. Good for him. Golagross went through with his threat and explodes the fort, enveloping everything. Obviously Delita didn't die, but Teta did. How tragic.
The point of view goes back to the monastery, a year later, and Bartz offers to accompany Agrias in rescuing the princess. I hope that soon I'll get to be filled in with a little more detail on what Bartz has been up to the past year.
...I'd imagine it's because he's pissed off and it was Ramza's brother that killed him solely because she wasn't nobility and thus 'expendable'... and Ramza is a noble.
He most surely was just being hot headed there though.

Doesn't change the matter that Delita simply let the heat of the moment cloud his mind though. It wouldn't be long before he'd be putting his belief that no matter one's family or lack thereof, it's what is within them personally that counts!

The PSP english isn't even that old. It's mid 18th century English aka Modern English, the same English that George Washington and all them spake, maybe a little bit older. I like both versions, but the PSX English I find more enjoyable, and I like to do without the slow attack animations.
The PSP translation sounds very beautiful, though. I've always been a sucker for that style though.

Some mystery guy has paid a thief to off the party. Apparently Gafgarion is bad news because that thief is not ****ting his pants.
I took away the nice equipment from Gafgarion and Agrias and gave it to Bartz and Heinlein. They are pretty tough now for it, I must say. I took Belmont and Reeve along for this battle also, but I could have taken anyone and this battle would still have been a joke. The only regret I had was that one of the thieves stole Reeve's Red Hood. Not cool.
Agrias is sure that Ovelia is being taken to some impregnable fortress. Maybe this place is associated with Goltana?
Hey it's Boco! Looks like Bartz and Boco are back together again. That is, if I don't get Boco killed. First time doing this battle I didn't really worry about Boco, Boco backed into a corner and the purple goblin kiled him. I guess saving that damn bird was a condition for victory, so I lost.
Tried again and this time rescued Boco. All is well in the world. I don't know if I will ever use him, but he's in my party, for now.
I took a little bit of time to run around and do a few propositions for extra gil. Got into a random battle, got some JP.
