I was trying to hook everything up. I got two monitors, but for some reason my PC just wouldn't take my second monitor. An error kept popping up one the screen of the second monitor when I tried to start it up with the display adapter plugged in. If I didn't have it plugged in, then the primary monitor would come on and everything worked normally.

But I want my second screen too.
So I went in messing with a bunch of stuff, trying to update stuff and I don't even remember what I did, but I think it had something to do with my graphics card and now both monitors just have no signal. I've been turning the computer off and on, and I'm hearing sounds but nothing on display.

I could cry right now.

We've all had cases (At least i've had) of complete idiocy when we plug one monitor into the motherboard, and the other monitor into the GPU. Make sure you don't do that.

With the adapter there's a very specific slot that you plug it in. It's worked for me all this time. Recently I moved and now I'm hooking my PC back up and now this slot doesn't seem to work anymore. It's the reason I would get the error message on start-up.

I'm no not sure if it's the slot or the adapter itself, but I know the cables aren't the problem.

You could have possibly changed the refresh rate on one (or both) of your monitors. I remember doing this when I was younger and I thought my entire PC was fucked. If you can see the BIOS, or better yet plug a bootable USB (Windows, gParted, anything) and see that, then it's likely a Windows-related monitor setting you tweaked.

All I know is, if I try to boot the computer up with one of the monitors plugged into it via the display adapter the error message will show up on the screen. At this point it's either the adapter or the PC itself. I plan on getting a new adapter. Hopefully I can plug one monitor in through there and fix whatever it is I did that knocked off the graphics from showing on my primary monitor. That or I'm just fucked if it doesn't work.

Did you update your graphics card drivers? Once my computer wouldn't even complete starting up unless I unplugged my second monitor. I updated the drivers and that problem went away.

Yeah. It said both were up to date. I even tried updating from their website.

I remember having to hook my monitor up to a spare computer to reset the refresh rate to get it to work on the other computer.

Anyway does the monitor options come on ?

Nope. The monitors stay blank because it's not getting a signal from the PC. The only time something will come up now is if I plug the monitor to the PC with a display adapter, but it'll just be an error message basically telling me to remove the adapter and turn the PC off and back on to fix the issue.

Whatever the issue is, it's definitely with the PC. But I managed to get my monitor back on because I r very intelligent.
But it seems my PC is just straight up refusing to do dual monitors. It was fun while it lasted.

That's really weird, but i feel like i run into the same problem of not having both monitors work whenever i have a new build, and somehow i always fix it. I just forgot how. Keep tinkering maybe? Different DVI, Display ports, HDMI, etc.

display adapter

Elaborate.

Is this one of those active adapters that convert a VGA signal into an hdmi signal?

I had one where it let you attach a second vga, but I got one that goes to the HDMI port recently. Using that I was able to get to safe mode and have my computer back to the initial setup with the graphics card that let me see from the monitors in the first place.
