I can't live on campus for CC

I have a question. Why do you need to live in campus?

I would really want to live alone

My parents/step family/ brother don't get along

Well, thats not really a good reason. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices to get what you want. And they may be what you have to sacrifice. Try to just stay away from home. But its much cheaper to live there.

Not only that, but you most likely wouldnt Be alone, anyway. At least, not as a freshman. Youll most likely have a roommate. And that could be worse, depending on who you have. You could even have multiple roommates.

Youll also have to have a place to go once youre done with school. As you have to leave. So, you may end up having to move back home for a short while, anyway. Or a long while...

You need a better reason than I want to live alone...

Also, as long as you go to a cheap college, student loans give you more then enough to live on

I couldn't afford the cheapest school I got into (20K a year at best)

The CC near me would've been free for me

Well, you literally said to me that you would really want to live alone. So, I thought that you meant what you said, so... But either way, that does change what I said about making sacrifices. Sometimes, you have to to get what you want. And if youre not willing to make them, then maybe you dont want it as bad as you think...

@wolfy42 you seem to be pricing things a little low. IIRC, he wanted to go to DC. Which is very expensive. He would be able to make it on the amounts youve given... Well, depending. Maybe in a bad area. But then he would die. And even living in MD and traveling to DC, MD is expensive.

If he stays in DE to go to a community college, he may be able to make it on those amounts, but he would know better. Id have to ask a friend from there what prices are like. But you just seem to have found yourself a cheap spot. Even in my current city, which is pretty poor and cost less than a lot of place, the amounts you put are barely enough a month...

Nah, list almost any place (with a community college...so it can't be totally rural) and I'll find you rooms to rent for $400 or so. I have done it enough at this point I'm confident I can do it anywhere.

There are expections (NY NY of course, and even Brooklyn is hard to get for less then $500 (although I have found a few), The Bay Area CA of course is generally at least $600 for a room etc. Hawaii as well (although there are some amazing rooms there omg).

In general though you can find somewhere to live around $400 a month, usually at that price without your own bathroom. $100 more and it's hard but you can find them with your own bathroom as well.

Not in bad neighborhoods either. I live in an apartment complex and the rent for a 3 bedroom here is a bit under $1200. If you were really trying to save money, you could cordon off the living room and have 4 people live here, for less then $300 a month. There are many places like this as well, so yeah, long as you can find friends etc, you could get aplace like this.

Same goes for most areas, just need to find the cheapest apartments that rent 3 bedrooms and then split it 3 or 4 ways. Even in the more expensive areas (and Olympia is fairly expensive), just by splitting it 4 ways and not having a living room, you could dropit down to what I pay.

His portion may be cheap depending on if he has roommates or how many he can get. I say that because in some cases, I would rather live alone than with a horrible roommate. So, he would have to find a good one. And in some places, the only cheap places are in bad neighborhoods. Or sacrificing more than one should for a cheaper price. Where the good place where you wont die cost a good amount more. Even for small spaces. I was still thinking you were giving him for prices for living alone since thats what he had stated earlier. With a roommate, it would be cheaper for sure, though. Though how cheap depends on where, still. Some places close to the colleges even charge more than other places sometimes because they can usually get like a group on students to move in to pay for it.

My advice on roomates.

If you have the time, and any decent friends at all, try and be roomates with people you already know/hang out with and like.

When I was in my 20's I had a core group of 10 friends, we would hang out every weekend, we went to the second ever burning man together, started playing Magic the Gathering when it first came out etc. We pretty much spent any free time we had together. Everyone had other friends as well that would sometimes join in, which made for a very large group of causal friends for everyone.

Anyway, 3 of us core friends rented a 2 bedroom (Back then it was $600 for it) and split the cost 3 ways. We converted the living room into a seperate bedroom (had a makeshift wall that still gave privacy), and bam, $200 each per month was pretty awesome.

Do that if you can, don't go with random roomates unless you absolutely have to. Rent from any apartment comples that has 3 bedrooms and your current rate today should be under $400 each, unless you live in a few very expensive areas (or you go for a really nice apartment complex).

It's easy, safe, fun (if you actually like your friends) and super cheap.

It's what I suggest to everyone because many people find they hate college and end up dropping out before getting an AA degree anyway, or struggle just to get that degree. Might as well get one for 0$=$5000 instead of spending 20k+ to go to a major university for a degree that doesn't matter where you get it.

Transfer after that (and actually end up paying less both due to having a AA degree with a high GPA (if you don't have a high GPA, don't go to an expensive university anyway), and because you are more likely to get scholarships etc.

AA degrees at CCs are as close to free as you can get, and may be totally free for everyone in the future (and are in some states already). Also lets you experiment a bit and see what types of classes you like. Want to take a theater arts class? No problem, try out sign language? Go for it, want to take Judo as a PE class, go for it...whatever you wanna try, do it at a CC where it costs almost nothing.

Doing anything else is just wasting money unless, like me, you get a full scholarship (graduated early, 4.0 GPA etc). If you get one of those, unlike me, be smart and actually use it.

I'm old, the world has changed, and it's generally harder for people just starting out now, but I have done a tone in my time. I would suggest the following for young people.

Stay in school and graduate, do it early like I did...but don't skip all of HS, I have always regretted that. Take your grades seriously and try and graduate with a 4.0 (or I guess there is better now).

If you get a scholarship, use it, but.......community college is just about free (or is free depending where you live) anyway. Don't just go to college right away though, make sure it's what you want, and that you have an idea what type of job you want.

I went to a trade school after I got out of the military (I joined at 17 the earliest you can, or well could). I highly recommend this even if you later decide to go to college. Mine was 9 months, 8 hours a day (40 a week). Graduated with an Electronic Techs degree. There are many options, and you can usually get a job right after graduation (most have good programs to help with that).

Even if you decide to go to college, you will have a decent income to help pay for it. You can pretty easily get your AA at a community college while working (I did back when Ds9 first aired....I went to night classes (Accelerated for some), while working during the day. Keep working whatever job you got from your trade school, and try and decide if you need/want anymore schooling, if there is a career you want (other then what your working in) or if you want to progress further in it (get a BA in your field for instance to move up in your company. Often jobs will help pay for college that furthers your knowledge of the field your working in, and will sometimes even hold a job for you when you graduate (or allow you to take the position before you get the degree even).

Avoid taking student loans. Don't rent your own place unless your field pays a ton, but instead have friends as roomates (good friends who you like hanging out with). Don't get anyone pregnant (I never did, but it's still important advice).

Invest money if you can. Back in my day (late 80's early 90's) EE bonds were SICK, 12-15% a year if I remember right. Sadly it didn't last long. You can't get as good investments anymore, but you can get 5% if you try....save money if you can (after paying for schooling, you can probably at least do that while getting your AA). That will let you hopefully pay for your BA between working and money you have saved without student loans (especially if your company helps as well).

Don't buy a new car, don't lease a car, get a decent car for about $1000 or so. If you don't know cars, have a friend who does help you find one. Insurance on it will be cheaper as well.

Get a credit card, even if you have to get a secured card (you deposit the money on the card) and start working on/building your credit. You can also buy a slightly more expensive car at a lot, on credit (payments are low and you can make more then the minimum, so if it's like $3000 total, you might pay a few hundred in interest by the time you pay it off). In all cases, always pay more then the minimum due for any credit cards, car payments etc. This builds your credit up, which you want to do asap. You can also take out student loans as long as you pay them off BEFORE you stop going to college (also builds credit...and no interest at all before you graduate).

Technically, in theory, you could take out student loans, invest the money, then pay them off before you graduate and keep any interest etc you made on the initial money as well (just don't spend it for fun!).

That is pretty much what I would do to be honest, you can skip the trade school, but honestly it's very worth it even if you only work in that field for a few years. The pay can be significantly higher. As an electronic tech I made $13 an hour (Base) and in 6 months got upgraded to lead tech at $16 an hour. Min wage when I was 19 was 4.25 an hour.

You do not need college to be successful. You really don't. I have a degree in computer science, but I'm fortunate that I get to use what I learned. And my wife and I have those loans to pay back for each of us. I use maybe 2 of the 5 years' worth I spent learning shit. They have completely industrialized it AND watered the education down from what it used to be.

I've been reading personal financing books and they all suggest finding a job and then going to school. At first I thought they were old farts who didn't understand modern times, but their message was surprisingly simple.

Live within your means. You can still make it rich. Credit card debt doesn't have to be a thing. Enter a trade you enjoy and learn everything on the job. Create a budget sheet.

I believe for undergratuates the max student loans you can take out per year is $12,500.

If that school you want to go to costs 20k per year, then you need to come up with $7,500 a year yourself. Which is cake while going to college (especially the first 2 years).

If it's 20k total for 2 years, you can actually get all that in student loans (not that I would ever suggest you do that).

If you do a typical m/w/f schedule at college for an AA (your classes are all on those days), you could just work tuesday/thursday/sat/sunday even at a minimum wage job, rent a room and still pay for everything yourself no problem.

$7,500/12 is $650 a month. IF you can't figure out a way to come up with that yourself and you only want to go to the expensive school, then go get a full time job for now and save up the money before going.

Even at min wage you could easily save that up within a year (possibly within 6 months depending on your expenses and your job/hours).

Tons of us went to school/college without student loans and without any help from family etc. College is not work, especially initially, it's mostly partying/playing games and craming right before tests (or writing a 20 page paper the night before it's due), at least that is generally the norm.

When I was getting my Masters degree, I was working full time as a teacher while finishing the credentialing program (which required more hours then normally teaching), taking care of my bed bound/sick wife, and my best friends wife who had just gone through hip and knee replacement surgery.

Wasn't fun, didn't sleep much, but I was in my 40's and I still made it work. Waaay back in the stone ages when I was in my 20's I would generally sleep 2 hours a night on the weekends just to hang out/spend time with friends etc. So much energy when your young....you can do just about anything if you put your mind to it.

how do you expect me to pay for it all by myself?

I believe for undergratuates the max student loans you can take out per year is $12,500.

If that school you want to go to costs 20k per year, then you need to come up with $7,500 a year yourself. Which is cake while going to college (especially the first 2 years).

Maybe cake for some people. But not all. Not even most, tbh. Though, it depends on if youre counting living in the dorms part of that 20K...

You want some "instant win" button and thats just not how it works. Grind our your general ed at a community college with a high GPA, and look into scholarships for transfer students and apply for Pel Grants to help cover the cost of tuition. Or quit, it's no skin off my ass if you give up before even trying.
