Links aren't too bad either, though I've never found a great use for them. I'm not sure quite how pendulum stuff works myself, but that's mainly because I never really looked at them.

My Monarch deck doesn't use an extra deck at all but that's less about it being bad and more to do with that being the gimmick of it. It's been holding it's own online though.

Domain of the True Monarchs requires having zero cards in the extra deck, and so many decks just immediately die if they can't use their extra deck, unless they have an out otherwise.

So did anyone else do the duel pass? Seems cheap enough for just 600 gems. I want that pot of greed, even though I have no idea what it does

Yes. Microtransactions to facilitate getting extra cards and stuff faster, but I've seen zero indication that you can't build at least one or two solid decks of literally whatever you want (Meta or otherwise) for free in a fairly quick manner.

well it seems i can no longer play my deck from 2008 or however long on ranked so guess i got to make a "newer" deck

Yeah my very first match was just me waiting 10 minutes for the guy to finish his turn, only for me to set 2 cards and pass the turn, and then wait almost another 10 mins for him to OTK me. Great fun.

But anyway, I started off on the Switch but after it crashed on me while making a deck, I tried out the PS4(on PS5) instead and it's like night and day in terms of performance and clarity. Much easier to read the cards and navigate the menus. Are most of you guys on Switch? It's crossplay though right?

Someone told me that if you play on PS and have PS+ you get 50 free packs so that is probably where to play if you have it, but yeah I'm on steam.

I must be very lucky cause i haven't run into a single meta deck yet in like 10 matches, and only one of those even had good cards like twin twisters, etc.

For people that need a GENERAL refresher. These is how these cards GENERALLY work.

Ritual Summons=You have to have the monster and AND the spell card to summon it in your HAND. Then you NEED to use the spell card and pick monsters that reach the level of the Ritual monster to send in the graveyard from the hand/field. So if a Ritual monster is 8 levels pick monsters that their levels equal to at least 8 to send to the graveyard.

Fusion Summons=You have to have the fusion spell in your hand and materials in your hand/field. Then use the spell.

Synchro Summons=A monster that is a tuner(it says that in their info)and one or more non tuner monsters in the FIELD. So if example a Synchro monster is level 7 you HAVE to have EXACTLY the levels required. So for example a tuner 4 level and a non tuner 3 level. Or a 6 level tuner and a non tuner 1 level. And such.

Xyz summons=You have to have 2 monsters of the same level in the field depending on the rank of the Xyz monster. If it is rank 4 for example and it requires 2 materials you have to have 2 level 4 monsters in the field.

Pendulum summons=Now this is tricky. These are basically hybrids, they can be used as monsters and spells and usually have an effect depending on how they are used. They have scales numbers in their info. THEN you activate these and you put them in your spell/trap card zone face up, one on the furthest left and one on the furthest right. THEN you can special summon AS many monsters as you can from your hand and/or extra deck if they are face up on the extra deck.

The levels you can summon are depending on the scales. So if a pendulum monster that is in your spell/trap card zone has the 1 scale and the other has the 9 scale you can summon monsters that their levels are 2 to 8. Yeah a bunch of monsters at once as the anime said. It is complicated true.

Link summons=These usually require different methods, like 2 effect monsters, 3 warrior monsters, any monsters and such. The monsters have to be in the field. Then you summon the Link monster BUT there are only 2 places that it can be summoned. ALSO if you want to summon another Link monster you have to summon it in the arrow that the other Link monster you control have. Link monsters generally have effects that affect cards their Link arrows show.

So yeah generally these are the types of the different special summon monsters.

I'm currently trying to figure out a mermail/deep sea/Atlantean deck. Trying to find the right balance. Next up will be Fur Hires, at least they're a bit simpler and have less cards lol.

I've got that, plus another couple thousand waiting in the gift box that expire in a month because I don't want to just spend them on nonsense. I have a feeling that the gems are going to be very generous at the start, but then dry out pretty quickly.

most likely the case in games like these since they need to hook you. the gems are also pretty expensive imo now that i've looked at it. The "special deal" price is like 3000 gems for $30.

This is generally how games like this are. Duel links was the same, mobile games in general are that way too. Once you get through all the initial content it becomes a grind.

You should be able to just go in there and follow them back once they're following you to complete the process though, right?

I made a Salamangreat deck and got to Silver rank without much trouble. I haven't done any card crafting yet, so I'll take a look at that next before I try to go further. I've got one copy of Balelynx and two copies of Heatleo, so I'll want to craft those up to three if I can.

I was amused by the first duel I tried with this deck, as I played the Salamangreat Sanctuary field spell as my first card, then my opponent immediately surrendered. They must have known what was coming and noped out. I had to actually play for the other wins.

Does anyone have advice on the 2nd real duel in the Gemknight solo story? It's the one where you have a bunch of terrible laval cards mixed in. I've tried 5 or 6 times and gotten stomped every time. The deck they supply you with seems just terrible.

I'm not sure if I just got a good hand cause I've never played with laval but I got it on the first try. Best I can tell, try to get gem knight citrine out to keep their set cards on lockdown. You can do it even with just one gem knight since the other req is just a pyro card, and there's some cards that let you search out a gem knight to do it with. But it seems like the laval's are pretty clearly split into "GY fodder" and "You can actually put these on the field and not get assblasted" so just focus on getting stuff like the cannon out and utilizing the other effects of the GY based lavals.

I'm sure this is all extremely helpful.

I appreciate it haha. I did finally manage to beat it after coming back to it later. Seems like it was all just rng and I was getting really unlucky. Pretty standard for me -_-

I actually had a lot harder time on the subsequent one because the AI knows how to use gem knights and I do not lol

I don't think I did this one, and you probably already know this, but keep in mind that if you don't care about the specific rewards, you can unlock the next duel + a different reward if you use your own deck instead of the loaner, and you can always come back later for completion's sake if you really want to.

just had an embarrassing game where i went down to 1k life points on the second turn, took like 5 minutes to set up a board because i still wasn't fully familiar with the deck, realized i couldn't activate Lightning Storm because you can't control monsters, said fuck it and went to battle anyway, not realizing my opponent had a monster effect that allowed them to increase attack points by like 2k and ended up killing myself

If you download the PS4 version to your PS5 you can also redeem the free packs on that as well. I ended up with 100 packs that way.
