probably safe if it was safe when it was put in the freezer and the freezer hasn't had any problems
as to whether it will taste good, that depends on how freezer-burnt it is
which will depend on the freezer and how it's stored
if it looks off-colored (generally whitish or otherwise paler than normal) it'll probably be gross, toss it
if it doesn't, go ahead and try it

Ah the freezer burn alone. Also when thawed to cook it will try and eat itself faster than it thaws. Toss that shit!

I would try vacuumed sealed up to year and a half.

Afaik, it's safe to eat pretty much as long as you can keep it frozen. It just loses "quality" after 6ish months.

supposedly there's no real limit for it to be edible, but it'll likely not taste very good after about 6 months.

it should be safe so long as it wasn't thawed, but it'll probably taste awful.

I recently made chilli with a batch of beef that had been in my freezer for 12 years.

Tasted fine and nobody got sick.

As others have said, it will very likely be freezer burned (tastes horrible) after that long.

But it's still safe to eat, assuming you froze it before it went bad.

It was about a month ago so I'm pretty sure food poisoning would have happened by now lol. Plus I froze a bunch of it for lunches and I've had some of those too.

It's safe. Maybe freezer burnt but you can do a lot of stuff with ground beef where that doesn't really matter.

But as with anything, trust your nose. If something smells like you shouldn't eat it then don't

Depends on temperature of freezer. If it is properly cold and has stated properly cold, then the food would be safe for like forever.

It was a 5lb chub of beef and I never needed 5lbs at the same time. I bought a bigger soup pot and finally had enough room to make a batch of chilli big enough for it.

assuming it was kept at freezing temps the whole time, yes it should be edible still. dunno about the taste. i like to use older meat in more soups, chilies and stuff with a lot of other flavors at play.

How is meat staying in your guys freezers for years on end lol, do you just not eat meat often or something? I usually will get a few things of meat and then eat them before I get any other meat. And if I did happen to go to the store and realized I had meat in my freezer I would eat the frozen meat before the stuff I just bought.

e: Ah, that makes sense.

no mold/bacteria is going to grow in frozen food, so its always going to be safe to eat. keep in mind that people have eaten mammoth meat that was frozen 30,000 years ago. its probably not going to taste very good though.

It also depends on the meat, right? Doesnt beef typically last longer in the freezer than other types of meat, with steak lasting longer than other cuts of beef?

Plenty of things you can do to cover it up. Chili, bolognese, taco meat etc. Wouldn't be good for burgers, but anything where you're simmering it in a sauce will be fine

nah man, I got a freezer from like the 1980s atm
shit gets freezer-burnt pretty bad in a year, in 1 1/2-2 years the outer strands of ground meat can start to whiten and become dried-out and elasticky
even if you don't let it go that far, the taste can be quite noxious and will come out no matter how you try to prepare it
pls trust me, I hate throwing away food so I've eaten way too much freezer-burnt meat in my life
hopefully you would have a better freezer than me, but it can definitely go too far to be worth eating

so, pretty much as this post was made, i had just made dinner with some frozen beef myself. bought maybe a week ago, frozen within a day, defrosted in the fridge. and wouldn't you fucking know it, i think it tried to kill me. something i've done a dozen times this year, the only difference was another half a day in the fridge defrosting.

but last night was fucking miserable, and it checked off pretty much every beef food poisoning box. still, better than the thought that the painkiller i took finally finished off a kidney.

but, damn, i was expecting to eat those leftovers for a few days.
