I've never understood folk who claim they don't have the time to play certain games such as a open world RPG game when they have the time to play casual games. Even if you can only game for a hour a week that's still a hour you could be spending on playing these RPG open word games. It just seems to me those who claim they don't have the time simply just don't want to. This could be applied to real life stuff too. Thoughts?

I understand it. My time is limited to maybe 2-3 hours a night, maybe 3 or 4 days a week. Still a good chunk of time, but when you have games releasing every week that you want to play, and games like AC Odyssey that have 100+ hours of content, those open world games can be a killer.

I still enjoy them, but I find myself wanting to play shorter, more linear games that I can finish more quickly so I can play other games.

So yeah, you're right. Those people can apply that notion to playing a large open world game for an hour a day over a casual game, but for people like me who like all sorts of games, the more time-consuming entries can really cause a pileup in your backlog

It depends. With a casual game, it can be easier to pick up and put down. Where when you have an open world game, playing only like for a hour means you might not get anything done. And its usually harder to remember where things are. At least, for me. So, I understand how some people probably wouldnt have time to play certain types of games...

When someone says "I don't have time" for something they really mean they don't find it to be the best use of their time, which is fine with me.

And yeah, as people have said, I'd generally rather play a bigger quantity and variety of games rather than just get a lot of hours as a whole, so long games are detrimental to that. Doesn't mean I never play them, but they need to really be worth it, and usually I need to have something else going on the side.

I've put hundreds of hours into rocket league but that kind of game is different. It's not really significantly different from game 1 to game 20 to game 100. Ironically the short bursts make it easier to accumulate a ton of time overall. But that's because a big open world game is intimidating. Playing an hour isn't the same experience as 20 hours which isn't the same as 100. You have to really commit for the long haul, not just overall, but with each session, as you can't really feel like you accomplished something when you play for 20 minutes.

well it makes total sense. I don't have time to pig out on civilization 6 on weekdays so i leave it till the weekend.

Typically only have 30-40mins a day during the week to play games so I usually play something quick like basketball.

Whereas I need at least 6-8hrs at a time to really get in an enjoyable game of Civ 6 so I save it for Saturdays.

I quite literally do not have the time (during the week) to play certain games. Not that strange a concept.

When they take 40+ hours to complete, that's almost a whole year barring anything else happening like burning out on the game, having other games be released, not getting that time due to other factors. It isn't unreasonable to not want to play that type of game due to time constraints.

Yes. It is indeed a choice for them. That I understand as said in my OP. It's just a pet peeve of mine when folk claim it isn't while also saying they play other games that take up time.

Xenoblade chronicles came out during a very busy time in my life and I only had about 15 minutes a day to play anything. 15 min in xenoblade doesn't get you very far and I eventually just l gave up on it

I can understand the sentiment, considering it takes a lot of time to really get into an RPG and the immersion can be ruined by breaking it into smaller chunks. Plus, if somebody doesn't have a lot of time, they might want to break it between shorter games rather than just focus on one.

Of course, in the case of a completely open-world title, the draw is often theming rather than an overarching story (making it a bit like an amusement park), so it can -- in theory -- be more pick-up-and-play than some other longer titles.

However, realistically speaking, when I don't have a lot of time, I'm going to avoid things that I know I'd enjoy if I could dedicate more hours to them. There are a lot of shows I could break up that I hold off because I want to binge them.

Also in the hierarchy of life, the universe, and everything, you're going to have priorities. People only have so many hours in a week and so many weeks in their lives. Longer content may be a turnoff for people precisely because it is longer and they see that investment of time, which they compare to the payoff in their mind. It's the same thing as with any number of activities. For instance, a lot of people talk about wanting to write a book but not having the time. From a technical standpoint, they could break it up to just an hour a day -- which could be like 800 words per day -- that builds to a complete book over time. However, there's something to be gained when you can devote more time to doing that because you might be more productive if you spend longer periods at a time writing. More likely, though, it's not that strong of a want or they measure the amount of time they spent writing vs a perceived payout (ie, worries that they won't find a publisher, that it won't sell if they self-publish, etc).

It's more true of real-life stuff than anything else, although energy can be an issue besides just motivation. If I'm feeling burned out at the end of the day -- even if I don't feel tired -- it's going to be that much harder for me to get something done.

Playing for an hour in a casual game typically puts you right in the action and can be a lot of fun

Depending on where you are, putting an hour into an RPG might be a fucking slog
